The ranch is framed on the south by the Capitan Mountain Range -- the only mountain range in New Mexico that runs east and west rather than north and south, which are protected as part of the Capitan Mountains Wilderness Area. Hunting is the primary recreational pursuit in this area of New Mexico, and El Capitan Ranch provides incredible opportunistic for elk, pronghorn antelope, and mule deer hunting. In addition, Merriam and Rio Grande Turkeys, wild hogs, black bear, bobcat, mountain lions, and coyotes are present on the ranch.
