Love it. The classic yachts to me are so much more elegant than the new over done super yachts being produced these days.

Cannon Fodder. YES, my question exactly. You would need a crew to always keep that expensive wood ship shape. When I have been on cruise ships, always crew coating the bright work. Painting varnish. I would Love to hear those Detroit's. I am a big fan. I own a 353 ( late 70s vintage) and a 8-71( early 70s vintage) have run the stacks straight up on 8-71. Boy she just screams along. There is nothing like a Marine Detroit sound. I use to watch the US Navy test Torpedo. The Retriever had these same engine's. And they pushed those 72 footers fast. I would run to are beach to watch them chase boaters off Range during a Test. It just fire them up to retrieve a tested torpedoes. They would shut down there engine during test Fires. To make range super quiet. It was a 3 dimension underwater weapons test Range. The shore station could follow the whole test. Plus they would moor up to big Navy steel floats. What was called a noise vessel. Make fack sub noise to watch torpedo underwater response. We even had a Torpedo crash into are beach once. I will never forget that day. Anyway it was so fun for me to hear those Detroit's. That now in my Retirement I can OWN two of them. They are easy to service. And will start with a full battery supply of POWER. I keep a plug in on them to WARM the OIL. You use straight 40 Wt. On two strokers.

The old boats are much more beautiful than the current crop of plastic tubs. The only problem is that , at least in Puget Sound, no marina will allow a wood hull anymore. Doesnt matter how well kept the boat is or if it has an excellent rating on the last survey.

There is one reported problem with the Seakeeper Gyro stabilizer system. Unless you add the sound shroud you have a high pitched wine from the gyroscope spinning. That would be very irritating when trying to sleep. The flaw in this system is the time for full effectiveness. From powered down to to full effect depends on the size, which is determined by the displacement of the hull, but on average for a yacht the size shown you get partial effect after 45 minutes, 1 hour 30 minutes for full effect. Once fully up to speed, definitely the best system. It doesn't take much effort to research stabilizer systems and find out where they have issues or concerns for each type. With the active fins, the hydraulic part is a concern, the heavier the seas the more of a concern. This also can apply to the paravane system. The stable wings you need to set once you get out into open water, then pull up but they are heavy and have the same issue shared with the active fin and paravane systems, added drag.

Real nice yacht but I would think the reason she hasn't sold yet is because of the range. 500 miles isn't enough for modern crusing. Perhaps modifications could be made for extra fuel tanks but that would also reflect the true value of the yacht. In this case she is overpriced.
@GarnockReviews
@GarnockReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Hey John, glad you enjoyed the video and the yacht. I'm conflicted on the range on this one. For some reason I don't see her as a long distance offshore cruiser. Instead, I picture her sailing up and down the Intercoastal, or island hoping in the Caribbean. Either way, 500 miles would be more than enough to get you from a to b.

The secret is to start with a good hull to begin with. Not only was this a solid built yacht on day 1, but it has been maintained regardless of costs. For most boats I'd agree with your comment, but I think this one has a good head start for the next owner.
@ccchhh4690
@ccchhh4690 3 жыл бұрын
If the hull is maintained and in good condition it's not. I grew up spending every weekend on my parents big wood hull cruiser. I also worked as a marine mechanic. If you are not handy and know squat about boats it is a little more work yes. The wood hull boats look a hell of alot better than plastic that's for damn sure.

what is an all-in estimate for monthly maintenance?
@GarnockReviews
@GarnockReviews 11 ай бұрын
A generic rule I was always told is that ballpark, annual costs for maintenance, insurance, marina fees, etc. equates to 10% of the boats value. There's lots of variables that can change that figure, but it normally works as a ballpark.

Hey Joshua, thanks for watching and for reaching out. My understanding is that this one is still for sale for $795k and located in Florida. I would need to check the exact location as the owner was still using this yacht while it was on the market. If you are serious about viewing, if you can shoot me an email with your contact details, I can forward this on to the broker to reach out to you directly. My email address is boats@garnockreviews.com. Thanks!

How much gallon it will burn per hour ❓
@GarnockReviews
@GarnockReviews 3 жыл бұрын
My apologies for the late reply. I have been told at 11 knots cruise, she burns 25 gallons per hour, and has a range of 500 mile with 200 gallon reserve. That range increases if you cruise at 9.5 knots which is what the owners typically do.

For the right person (not me, I'm a sailor), this is a bargain. Sure, maintenance must be factored in (probably $50k/yr. w/o crew?), but so much more be beautiful than a modern $4 million boat.

Diesel fuel 1400 gallons, ar $4/gallon=$5600. If cruising range is 500 miles, per mile = $11.20/ mile, or about 3 gallons per mile. ? Correct. What is cost of insurance and slip fee in popular areas? Ownership taxes?
@GarnockReviews
@GarnockReviews Жыл бұрын
Hey Neil. Ballpark, I think your in the right area for fuel. As to marina fees, according to their website, the marina it is in here in Jacksonville, Florida is $1250 + tax per month. Insurance is really open to variables including your own experience and where you will be cruising etc, but ballpark probably around $1500 per month or so. Hope this helps.
@JohnDSmith-po4nu
@JohnDSmith-po4nu Жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, IME there are some more components that are related to the annual/monthly cost of owning/operating a boat like this. W/O sailing her a single mile, you'll probably have to think of spending around 3k a month, whereas depreciation isn't included to the maths.

She's a very capable boat in terms of sea state and weather, but she doesn't have that sort of range. She would be great for island hopping through the Caribbean, or running from Florida to New York etc 🤠

@GarnockReviews

When I filmed her originally, she was kept in undercover storage. That would help ease the pain and hide from the Florida sun. At the time, she also had a captain living onboard full time so it was easier to keep up with maintenance in smaller chunks too 😉

Not many boats of this size and style have that. The boat shouldn't be pitching and rolling enough to need it. Sailing yachts sometimes have support options since the yacht sails at an angle more.

That roll up plastic over the rear cockpit looks hideous on a boat of this class. If the weather is too bad sit inside. It looks like the sort of thing you'll find in a trailer park. Beautiful boat ruined.

Thanks Martin. I agree she is a beautiful boat. The one advantage of those covers is that they can be easily removed. You could have the entire cockpit open in a matter of minutes without any structural changes or damage being made. It offers the best of both worlds, if you want them in place you can, but if you want them removed you can do that too.
