Really? I think the low was flubby, I tracked with one next to a Marshall 410,(both dry) Soldano has it all over Marshall in many intermediary mid gain and clean voicings (imho) but the 410 high distortion low end was tight and caught all the pick detail

SLO is a killer amp (previous owner) the flaw with the amp is for $4,000 it doesn’t have a separate gain and volume knobs for the crunch mode, nor can you footswitch the amp from clean to crunch. The crunch channel has a sweet tone with the gain dimed with an OD, but if you want to go back to playing clean you have to manually flip the switch and then readjust the shared gain and volume knobs for the clean channel to dial back in. Basically it’s impractical to use clean, crunch and lead interchangeably. Fatal flaw imo. You always feel like you’re making a comprise, or sitting in front of the damn thing readjusting the volume/gain as you’re manually switching modes. (The foot switch only switches between clean and lead) Ultimately I couldnt stomach that for $4,000, no matter how amazing it sounded.

I used to own an Avenger 100. Currently running an old Rev G Triple Rectifier and a Splawn Supersport. Although I miss the Avenger, like you say, it is a lot of money for one amplifier when Mesa and Splawn can cover that type of ground. However, the SLO sounded amazeballs.

For the low end tubby thing you're mentioning, drop the depth down lower to around 9 o'clock and bring the bass up some. The bass is weird on the SLO. It actually brightens things up some as it's raised. Also, the clean/crunch channel is the full gain stack of the amp but with preamp gain stages being dropped out of the circuit which is apparently why that crunch setting on the normal channel sounds so natural. I think you would probably dig the KT88 powered SLO100 that Bruce at Brit-Tone builds. I've played a lot of his SLO's as he's local and now own my own custom built SLO of his and it's just... man.. It's the best stage amp I've ever plugged into. Its' got SO much gain and saturation but it just sits so effortlessly in the stage mix with any other amp on the other side of the stage and has the clarity for the crowd to hear every single note you're playing and as a lead player, best of all, it's still fairly forgiving and can hide SOME amount of mistakes. It's not nearly as unforgiving as something like a MKIIC or the MK IV I've played or my Studio Preamp. My nitro is the only amp I've had on stage that is legit louder and more powerful but the bottom end on the nitro is just so hard to control to get it sounding "right" in the mix without some 10 band EQ in the loop tweaking where as the SLO sounds good no matter where you've got it EQ'd. Honestly, if you like this (which it sounds like you do), try to find a used 2 channel Titan amp. Zach used to build them and they were basically the perfect blend between the SLO and 5150. It had the clarity of the SLO but the tightness and insane saturation of the old Peavey's. I really regret getting rid of mine but they pop up here and there on Reverb for usually around $1200~1500. A steal if you ask me.

@FastRedPonyCar
@FastRedPonyCar 3 жыл бұрын
@@untoldguitarist MAAAAN Yeah I really liked my MAK4. I kinda regret selling my makoplex but it only having 1 channel was a hard pill to swallow. I need cleans for my shows and the high gain sound it had just was too similar to what my Nitro already brought to the table so it was kinda redundant.
@untoldguitarist
@untoldguitarist 3 жыл бұрын
@@FastRedPonyCar If I could find a Mak 2 Dorado head again with the 6550’s in the power section and the white knobs. I would part ways with the Mak 4. Here it sounds like the SLO treble is spiky and over-dynamic and subtle differences in pick attack are exaggerated but maybe it's the brightness of the straight recto cab. I kind of prefer compressed saturation like 5150, Dual Rectifier, or a loud DSL or JCM800. Interestingly the Rectifier preamp copies the SLO 100 but differences in negative feedback and the poweramp section shaping make that amp usable to me. Would like to play a SLO in person though but owned a Jet City for a few years.

Great Video, I'll admit I waited till the end of the video and I was kind of relieved to agree. I actually stopped this video at a point and compared the sound to three other videos demo videos trying to figure out why this was a 3k amp and why didn't sound like 'the ultimate high gain amp'. From the other videos, I think it might sound better in a mix. But, to keep it simple, a high gain should have balls (Play thrash level gain) without an overdrive pedal. I suppose 'High Gain' is up to interpretation, but that just how I see it.
@FastRedPonyCar
@FastRedPonyCar 3 жыл бұрын
This amp's price tag is ultimately revealed on stage when you have it cranked to ear-splitting levels and the gain cranked through the roof and you can still hear every single note ring like a bell. Few, if any, amps can do this. My splawn Nitro is the closest I've heard but the nitro's low end is just overwhelming and very hard to manage and get set right to sit well in a stage mix when it's really loud.
@ThePenitentSquirrel
@ThePenitentSquirrel 3 жыл бұрын
@@FastRedPonyCar Sure, I can understand that, it's almost what I like to think of as the Plexi conundrum in that it can only sound let's say 'ideal' when maxed (not to say this is all Plexi styles, specifically 100-watt variations). However, the reality is if your not a touring musician who does very large/outdoor venues your not going to be able to hit this amps sweet spot without making your singer want to kill you and the entire first threshold of the audience go deaf. Now the prior scenario is very unique in this day and age, the reality is the majority of people play and home or do studio work or play bar/club say venues. It's extremely loud for any home unless for some reason your dead set and have an iso box or di/load box in which case you're not really getting the true sound (imo) it will get compressed. You could also go with attenuation, but risk losing the character of the amp and also lose your effects loop (not a very good trade). In a studio, a maxed 100-watt tube amp is unnecessary and might actually hurt the quality of the recording. Last in club/bar/normal size venue its the first problem just about a million times worse and given that PA systems have gotten really really good along with the ability for a sound guy to tailor the sound to the venue there isn't much need for 100 watts of blasting the middle of your eardrum out. Trust me, I dreamed the dream once too, its a nice dream (it is), but it quickly falls apart.
@FastRedPonyCar
@FastRedPonyCar 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThePenitentSquirrel Yeah it's hard to justify really any 100W amp for a bedroom warrior but even on stage and some outdoor shows I've played, unless the PA itself is just totally lacking, I've never been wanting of more power than what the Jubilee could throw at me. The Two Notes stuff these days is extremely impressive and if I didn't already have a Kemper, I'd probably have one of those Torpedo load box/cab sim units. I've gigged with my 100w superlead maybe two or three times and despite it having a PPIVM on it, it still NEEDS to be loud to really sound it's best. You get the gain at lower volumes but not that really nice chewy compression and breakup that the power section being pushed really hard produces.

Doesn’t the mark ll c+ predate this amp? I would say that was the godfather of “modern high gain” though it’s a lot trickier to use and understand
@belligerentamateur
@belligerentamateur 2 жыл бұрын
It does, but pretty much every modern, popular high gain amp since the SLO came out has it's DNA in it. The same can not be said for the Mesa, as great of an amp as it is.

It would be interesting to hear this compared with the Badlander, since it shares the same preamp circuit as the dual rectifier. I am guessing the Badlander would be tighter.

Badlander is much tighter and quite a bit different from both the SLO and the rectifier

@@belligerentamateur which one would you prefer the most? I have the Badlander and I think it’s great. The SLO sounds great in your video, but I am not sure if it is something that is really worth it for me.

It's a hard one to pin down. I ultimately decided it was worth it for me but it makes me money on stage just about every weekend and I want zero compromises with build quality, clarity, tone and flexibility and the SLO brings it all. Now... I've gotten by JUST fine with my 50w silver jubilee for the last 7 years or so but that amp doesn't have the amount of gain a SLO has, the clean channel isn't nearly as big, fat and clear as the SLO and when I need to get really loud, you definitely can hear the jubilee sweat and lose clarity when that thing is cranked. BTW, my SLO is 50w also and it punches with the clarity of a 100w amp.

Kyle! Great video man, I’m always appreciative for the effort you put forth to create your videos. Very cool and inspiring to see your excitement as well. I just cannot construe the appropriate words to describe the type of person who would write such a ridiculous comment to you. In the mean time, again, thank you for your efforts and inspiring your fans with your excitement and positivity. Like you, I like the Soldano because it makes me smile, regardless of how I play.
