In the late 1980's Mike Soldano took his new guitar amp design to Los Angeles and got it in the hands of the best guitar players of the day. The SLO 100 quickly became one of the go to amps for these session legends like Steve Lukather, Mike Landau, Tim Pierce and many others. To this day the SLO 100 is one of the most versatile guitar amps on the market.

Rhett, it was an honor to talk about an amp that is super important and something, honestly, that I really needed to get my job done as a session guitarist. Great video, and still a great sounding Amp in 2023.... thank you Michael for inventing it:)

I'm always so happy to see you in Rhett's videos, and on your own channel. What an amazing friend for Rhett to have. The video where you help him select his Les Paul taught me so much about choosing a guitar among all the guitars that hang on the wall.

I have heard some great things about Soldono amps, but if we're going to be historically correct, ALL of the LA session players were going to Paul Rivera for mods of their Fender amps and then his own amplifiers long before Soldono. He is a giant and I'm not sure why his amps seem to get overlooked. They cover all of the tones one could ever need...a tone tweaker's dream.

Part of what made soldano amps so loved is Mike himself. Back around 2000, I acquired an early slo100. I was living in Hawaii, and I called Soldano because I had a question about the amp. I don't even remember what the question was. Mike looked up the serial number and realized my amp was from before he added the effects loop. He offered to add it for free if I paid shipping. I didn't even ask for it. I didn't know it was an option. That's service. He went above and beyond. Best experience I've ever had on a service call. He is just beyond cool. Mike, we love and respect you, brother. Thanks for sharing your new find, Rhett. These amps deserve all the love.

Fantastic service. I've owned numerous Soldano amps throughout the years and called them many times. Mike and Bill Sundt typically helped me with any questions I had, even regarding used amps I had bought. I don't have any experience with anyone else from the company but those two were so helpful and friendly. Every amp I've owned from them was smokin in their own rights.

In October of 1985 Mike brought that “breadboard” prototype amp over to test on my 1982 Marshall anniversary cabs for a comparison here in Seattle. I was a typical 80’s metal player into the high gain but also played clean, but with celestions the clarity of his amp was not noticeable at first. I used my iceman with PAFs and Mike was really excited about what he was hearing from his amp, so much that he said right then “he’s going to relocate to Cali and pursue building an amp while working at Stars Guitars in S.F. He completed making my Soldano double neck which was his last guitar and went full on in the amp biz. I’m so happy for Mike’s success cuz he’s a really great guy and friend of high quality, just like everything he creates!🤘💜

So when Micheal S was developing this amp at the time he was my cousins guitarist stage tech and had Modded his Marshall’s at the time. We did a show together and I asked him to Mod my XB100 and he laughed at me and said there’s literally nothing I could do to that amp and make it sound any better. Saw at NAMM in 2019 and he remembered telling me that back in 1987.

That SLO30 sounds VERY good too. I owned both, and the only time you heard the difference was side-by-side. I didn’t need a 100w amp, so I went with the 30. Anyone who thinks the 30 doesn’t have the signature sound, watch a video from a guy by the name of “Cragginshred”. He gives a clinic on how to get the SLO signature plexi, hard-rock sound, this amp was designed around.

I own the Hod Rod 25 which came out right before Mike retired. It’s design is almost like a mini SLO but came out a few years before the 30. It’s a beast and sounds so good at lower volumes. I purchased an SLO 100 last year. No regrets! You did a great job Rhett covering the various tonality of the amp, showing that it's not just a hard rock or metal amp. One of the other amazing things about the 100 is that you really don't have to crank the master volume to get a great sound, but if you do, it remains tight and focused. Shout out to Mr. Pierce, always great hearing from him.

I met Mike in the mid ‘80s when he had a little shop in Hollywood. I brought my Boogie Mark 3 over to compare to his amp. He was very friendly and accommodating. I dialed in his amp for a while and we A/Bed it with my Boogie. I liked his, but as I recall I concluded it could sound very similar to the Boogie (which I loved). Anyway, I didn’t buy his, but it was a good experience. Over the years, I was happy to see his success.

Love to hear the studio guys talk about the history of all this stuff..that rack era is so inspiring as a guitarist, the Wild West of tone chasing..so cool!! As a millennial I’m so jealous..those 80s multi channel rack preamps capture the essence of what’s so great about guitar, super crystalline cleans - the purity of the instrument in parallel to destructive ear piercing high gain..perfection! Great content Rhett, keep it up! I entered into the sweepstakes, im super interested in that amps course too - hopefully this era will be another 80s style guitar renaissance!

Amazing high gain, crunch and clean sounds. I got a SLO30 about a year ago and couldn’t be happier with it. Psst! Don't tell anyone, but the Astroverb and Atomic are based on the SLO's Crunch channel. Here's an email reply I got from Bill Sundt in 2002: "The reverb-o-sonic and the astroverb are both based on the 'normal' channel circuit of the SLO. The SLO has a clean/crunch switch for this channel. The reverb-o-sonic's two channels are basically these two, clean and crunch. The astroverb is basically the crunch channel. Neither has the super high gain overdrive circuit. The HR50+ has the overdrive and the crunch. All of these respond very well to backing off the guitar volume knob to clean up the sound. The lucky 13 has the soldano overdrive channel and a fender style clean channel. bill sundt"

Cool series! Whats next? Do you have a 'silverface sound' for the folks who cant afford earlier fenders?

There are only very few things I really consider bucket list gear for me, but a Soldano amp is one of them. I have a (right now sadly broken) Soldano SLO pedal that really delivers with my old Engl. But man, that SLO - you really sound great with it, Rhett!

Rhett this amp lives in the Overdrive Master set between 5-6 Pete Thorn has a great video on this.. The Cascading Gain I believe was this amp first to do it. The Neural Plugin I own is great as well. Great Production man.....Vids are great.

Pretty sure I saw Tommy Katona of Texas Flood playing through a SLO 100. Didn’t know what this amp was capable of until seeing this video. Thanks for sharing Rhett!

Another great video man. It’d be cool if you did a video on classic basses and bass amps that had a huge impact on rock n roll.
