Hi Pamela, You can do the same technique in 14k as you do in sterling. Gold filled is a different story. If you melt the end of the wire you end up with a brass/gold alloy that will turn oxidize very quickly. If you want to make your own Gold gilled head pins. it's best to gold plate them afterwards. This is so brilliant! For the first time I understand, why hard solder is better than soft solder. It's all about the temperature! :O More heat you use to melt your solder, the stronger your joint will be ;) I love this video, and I'm sure, I won't make any mistake.

Hi mark,i spoke with you on the phone last week about the broken sterling ring shank with turquoise. Is it possible the ring isnt sterling after all? Isolder still wont flow at all. Other rings are no problem

Yes Gold filled is a different story. Do I need to use a flux or just heat is that all I need to melt 14 Karat? Thanks so much Mark!

Hi, we recomend you use a protective flux for the sterling and the 14k gold when balling up the end of the wire. We use a home made solution of 50% Boric acid and 50% denatured alcohol. On our website search 704096 then click on the " More Info" tab and scroll down to find the Blog article i did on how to use it. This flux will help prevent firescale on the silver and gold. Hi Mark..I am new to soldering and am hoping you can help me. I work primarily with very thin (0.9-1.5mm) gold filled, rose gold filled and silver plated necklaces. In order to get my chains through small crystals I cut off the ring at the end (the ring is usually 5-7mm in diameter). I just bought a Dremel Versatip 2000-6 soldering iron and my questions are 1) what type of wire should I use to solder the ring back onto the different chains, 2) what type of flux should I be using, and 3) How high should I turn the heat on the soldering iron to? If you would answer these Q's, I would be forever grateful!

I have a question I hope you can answer it for me plz. I can make handmade sterling silver ball head pins with no problem! can you plz tell me how to make 14 k gold ball head pins and gold filled ball head pins? I mean do I need flux to ball up the wire or what do I need? Thanks so much

wow! The best soldering video ever! Thank you, Rio Grande! Now if only your CS people (on live chat) understood solder you would have made a fortune on a purchase. But because they were SO clueless I had to go elsewhere. I'll try again and this time use the phone and hope to get better results. Who ever is "manning' your on line help should be soldered and fired!

HI Mark! Can I solder gold-filled wire? If so, do I just use gold solder?

Hi Joan Jen, you sure can and yes you do. 14 or 10k yellow easy ( or medium ) gold solder works best. Here is a link to a video on how I do it. It’s pretty simple but the name of the game is to be very careful. You can’t really fix any mistakes.
