1. Peninsular War wasn't that long ago historically 2. As a new republic, they wanted to reassure the rest of Europe that they were still the same good old Portugal, not some radical nut jobs. 3. Always handy to have the UK on your side (up to c.2000).

Well we had our own interests , the german were ocuppying land in the portuguese african colonies. Portugal asked england to enter the war a couple years before, but england refused because the portuguese army was obsolete and had to be trained and equipped by england first. England reach out to help Portugal yet again because of the alliance, thats true.

People too often forget that the portuguese at the time kind of hated the british, because of the "Pink Map" ultimatum and the damages done in the post-napoleonic overstay of the british. Which was somewhat reciprocated, as the british despised the new republican government, to the point the british were colluding with germans to take over portuguese Africa pre-WW1, and Portugal was later denied founding status in the League of Nations. Like the italians, it was mostly the prospect of war spoils that drew the portuguese in, and an eagerness to be taken seriously by those that had walked all over them. But logistical and tactical incompetence of the portuguese High Command, as well as limited forces directed to France (because of political turmoil back home and the more internally important African Front) forced them to be taken under France and Britain's wing. Things are not all simple mindedly black and white, is what I mean.

The well thought out composition and direction goes a long way towards bridging the gap between "simple" and more detailed animation. I say "simple" because this is the only channel of this type that I know of that even attempts to render the scenes using 3d graphics, which are anything but simple.

I was long impressed with the camera works especially the dogfight. It was intense and immersive. Better than most action movies

The machineguns not having bipods and just... floating there is quite a large oversight considering the high quality of the rest. I imagine you'd need some serious hand muscles to point a machinegun using only the pistol grip XD

Surely such a high-ranking British soldier WOULD have mentioned his life being saved by a Portuguese ? Not remotely meant as a criticism, more an observation, but.... You weren't exactly tripping over Portuguese soldiers every 5-mins Main "protagonists" on the Western Front, obviously British, FRENCH & GERMANS, right ? As far as I know the Portuguese didn't have reserves to replace them. So they had to stay in their trenches all the time, and without any break *. . .*

@@letoubib21 It is true that there were no Portuguese reserves. However, frontlines troops had to be relived from time to time (not much) and in this situation the Portuguese were not in due time. They should have been relieved by British Forces since they were under the direct command of the BEF

As a newly established Republic,Portugal wanted recognition and the preservation of Independance so we forced our way into ww1 by making the British invoke our alliance. We officially entered the war in 1916 despite engaging german forces in Africa since 1914. 2 Divisions were trained and sent to Flanders and France and proactively participated in several offensives and defenses. At La Lys the overstretched 2nd Portuguese Division was defending a strech of open land meant to be held by 4 full divisions and they were facing some 20 000-50 000 germans. In the ensuing Artillery Barrage and sturmtroops infiltration attacks the Portuguese line broke in several areas and many Portuguese soldiers were killed and captured. All Battalion and regimental HQ'S were stormed and overrun with all officers KIA or taken captives, our field artillery was overrun in hand to hand combat and died to the last man. Around 60%-80% of the Division was lost between killed,captured and wounded but our resistance allowed the Allies to reform the lines. Our pay? Shamed by our British "Allies" and branded cowards for their own failures. They received Portuguese inteligence and officers reports of massive german troop movements but discarded Portuguese reports as dilusional.. After the Battle the British forged reports of units that were stationed in whole other areas of the front stating the Portuguese had fled without firing a shot. British liason officers countered that stating that Portuguese forces fought valiantly against a superior foe outnumbered over 20:1 and did the best they could and that french forces under similar circunstances were hailed as heroes before. They too were silenced by the British Goverment. Portugal finished the war in shambles and abandoned its soldiers in France or german stalags as pows until the early 1920s when Spanish and French authorities pressured the Portuguese Goverment into bringing its pows home. This is the sad story of Portugal's participation in ww1

yes, this is normal for the Portuguese, you think they are surprised when they hear that Portugal in the first world war the vast majority of people, they only remember the second world war but in the first, Portugal we Portuguese gave a little help and for that time sent 200 thousand men / soldiers, it wasn't much but for a country like ours it was something 10 thousand men died in the north of France near the border with Belgium the overwhelming majority went to Flanders, we just wanted a little more recognition that's all.

But, music tends to bring stories further than statues. As for bands; what other band does as much *historical* power metal? Powerwolf has a good amount from what I can tell, but it's all medieval. *And* the band is currently mired in racist/white supremist controversy. Gloryhammer? *Fantasy* power metal specifically. And also got either some racist controversy and/or some other controversy that had the lead singer get fired/leave to do his own thing. Alestorm? Pirates, and I'm not a big fan because I prefer my songs to be under 50% swear words for all the lyrics. Blind Guardian? Mostly *fantasy* with some mention to at least historical myths like the Valkyries and Nephilim. Civil War? Potentially since they're a full historical power metal band like Sabaton, but I don't think they've released an album in the past few years and definitely no where near the same pedigree as Sabaton despite being formed from former band members.

@@5peciesunkn0wn Niche bands are niche. Niches are to be disregarded. Want a good historical metal song? Ask Iron Maiden (you _might_ have heard of them). Want it to actually be _power_ metal? Take no substitutes: Manowar is to be called (they _have_ made songs regarding the real world - because they are not a niche band). Hey, even a "glam" metal like Bon Jovi once made a superb historical metal song or two. And so on. Anything better than choosing a subpar, "baby's-first-AMV-soundtrack", entry-level group like Sabaton just because of their niche.
