Through the Eyes of the 1st-in IC. Upon arrival, this fire had its challenges and what a better way to learn, if not through your own eyes, then through the eyes of another. Helmet Cam footage and an interview with the first-in Engine Company Captain display the importance of a well-coordinated attack and thinking several steps ahead. Note, he doesn't stay in the cab and he keeps track of all his units in his head. No easy feat!

SDFD always has their 2nd- in Engine lay the line. If a supply line is needed. The 1st pump takes a hydrant if it's close, but SDFD goes to work off tank water. SOP in my dept was the 1st Engine would have laid to this fire. But wouldn't have water on the fire as fast as SDFD. Also, we only had 3 where they have 4 and can go right to work.

Jack mentioned when I talked to him that 11’s was there at the same time and they weren’t sure if the complex had a hydrant. 19’s and 11’s agreed that 19’s would check and if there wasn’t one, 11’s would bring the line up the driveway. No reason to dump all that hose and block access if you don’t need to, was the thinking.

It’s true, we are given discretion on being first in and laying a line. Policy was that with smoke showing you dropped a line. It wasn’t practice, so much. We had a bit of a cultural shift and with the “Mission Driven Culture” concept, it eased up. If there’s engines piling in pretty quickly on each other, that first in can get right to work. If you’re out in one of those districts where you are on your own for a minute or two and that driver can’t just hand jack to something close, or there’s any doubt, lay the line.

FYI If you can see fire drop a line yourself.

Depends on your department, in my area the 2nd and 3rd due engine are within 1-2 minutes behind and our tank water is more than enough for most fires. Cant compare city jobs to suburban and rural departments. Everyone has a formula that works for them.

@@hihfty yup where I'm at we have a whole lot of units that arrive at the same time typically second due engine secures water if the hydrant isn't within a hundred feet of the 1st in engine
