Unique lessons on a unique type of structure. For example, access to the office/storage above is from the separate back half. Or that there even is an office/storage space above! We review some lessons learned on this iconic structure with one of the first on scene.
incident command, firefighter, fire captain, truck operations, fire truck, after action review, fire training, roof ops, vertical ventilation, commercial structure fire

I've always referred to these as "A" frame buildings. Typically they'll almost always be defensive because of very rapid interior fire spread. On a side note back in the 80's I believe in London they had a fire in the Kings Cross Subway station. This was a very unique fire because of how quickly the fire spread. If I'm not mistaken the first units on scene requested what would be an eighth alarm. They did research after the incident and found that fire spreads much more rapidly in diagonal spaces such as A frames or in this case angular tunnels than it does in vertical spaces. I'll try to find the video and post a link Great tip on moving the butt of the ladder away from the building for better foot placement on the rungs.

Totally off topic but the 3 Quints that run as Trucks seem to never be used for anything other than a Truck. Why pay more for a rig that doesn't do 2 jobs well? And wouldn't it make sense to make T-11 or T-14 a Tiller?

I don’t know of anyone in operations here that’s big on the quint concept for how we operate as a city. But I can’t speak to the reasoning at the time. Brownouts with Engines being shut down? It certainly works for some. By in large, pumps are right behind the Truck, if not in front, allowing the Truck to be a Truck. Wasn’t a popular move making the Trucks quints and so not embraced. There was a point in our more recent history that similar decision making authorities weren’t keen on tractor trailers. That’s changed and the decision makers now see the value in them. We have some new Tillers and have plans for more. I would say most of our Truck fleet is planned to be be tractor drawn. There are some exceptions. Our training stations have probationary firefighters in the back and they can’t certify to tiller. Also, I’m not sure every station can fit the longer body.
You go, We...or not?
