I've got the 20W B1 and when i looked over the air assist i found more bottlenecks with the 20 Watt Module. The curved pipe for the air intake on the laser is as thin as the clutch itself, so for me it makes no sense to change anything unless i get a thicker pipe. At least the nozzle hole is thinner as on the 30 W module. Funny - the air-assist by Sculpfun uses the same pump with a much thicker clutch...although they messed up with the hose 🤨 At least i found out that the lens of the B1 module becomes dirty real quick even with the air assist on almost all the time - so frequently cleaning will keep you cutting (i realized the thin smudge layer on the lens cost me almost 30% Power!!)

It's a pretty solid laser once you get it dialed in!

Thanks for your time in reviewing the B1.... As the B1 does not come with a crosshair laser, I needed a good way to align my beam. I got the idea from "Steve Makes Everything" and copied the design. Since the "4 pack" of laser crosshairs was cheaper at 19 bucks, that's what I bought and after assembly, alien tape held the unit on the left side - front laser head nicely. My first use of the crosshair did provide a good alignment spot, but, it was waaay too bright. Using a 500 ohm pot, (potentiometer), in series with the +5 volt feed line, (powered by USB power cable), I am able to dial down the laser crosshair brightness to barely visible to full on.... Since the current draw of the laser crosshair is only ~ 20 mA/.1 watt, the typical 500 ohm pot's rating of .25 watts will handle the load. The lasers that do come with a laser crosshair are OK, but, you cannot vary the brightness and if you are halfway handy, a home built pointer will serve you waaay better with adjustable brightness.... You just need to see a faint crosshair, not a blinding brightness that makes it hard to see.... Remember to set up the "laser offset" in LB, test, and be good to go..

I just bought the 40 watt version two weeks ago. The SD card didn't have the driver file on it but they (Longer) sent it to me via WhatsApp and it has worked perfectly. The only thing I had to do was increase the homing speed. I am very pleased with the results but I may still get the more powerful air pump just to be sure. I have an overhead camera and truss being delivered today, can't wait to get that dialed in.

Great to hear! I upgraded to the 40 watt recently as well (replaced the module). The nozzle on the 40 watt is the correct diameter and does a better job at directing the air flow!

Thanks for this video it helped solve a few of my burning issues however im still stuck. Constant error messages in console and its a struggle to use the machine at all. Is there anywhere with a list of what the $$ settings should be to run correctly?

Thanks so much for making this video. I just bought the B1 30W and it is still in the box. I have built an office in my shop for it and my 3d printer. Right now I'm thinking about an enclosure for the laser. do you think 200 cfm is adequate for exhausting the smoke and fumes? I guess I'll know in acouple f days. one more thing. Could you do more videos on where to get/how to make engraving and cut files?

I have a 160CFM rated fan that ducts out of a 4 inch pipe to outside. I recently bought a 200 CFM fan from Amazon and it did not pull anywhere near the volume of air that my 160CFM rated fan did. So be cautious about the CFM ratings on cheaper extraction fans. If you use an enclosure similar to the one I have, when you turn the fan on you should visibly see the enclosure being sucked in by the fan. I have a course on getting set up and running with your diode laser quickly. It has a section on creating basic designs and I talk a little bit about where to find things to cut/engrave. You can check it out here: letsmakeathing.com/laser-learning/ I will definitely keep the idea in mind about making the files for future videos!

Any ideas on how to fix the homing issue I am having? The homing brings the laser to the bottom left corner and acts like it wants to keep going, causing some grinding.
@LetsMakeAThing
@LetsMakeAThing 6 күн бұрын
The limit switches are in the lower left for the laser and it should stop then back off when the switch is pressed. It will hit it once, back off and then press it again to set the home position. If it's not stopping at all then there is an issue with the laser and you need to contact Longer support.

Thank you. The nozzle insert I made wasn't a perfect fit and I needed to use Kapton tape around the outside to make it fit. I got sidetracked and never redesigned the insert so I haven't made the STL available.

@LetsMakeAThing
@LetsMakeAThing 10 ай бұрын
I'm honestly not sure as Longer never shared that information with me. Only way I know is to measure the inner diameter of the nozzle. If it's around 5mm it's gen 1

How does it compare for engraving to the little CO2 version behind you, as in speeds/power?. :)
@LetsMakeAThing
@LetsMakeAThing Жыл бұрын
The K40 clone sitting next to the diode doesn't work so I can't give you a comparison. I bought it used knowing it needed a new tube. The long term plan is to gut it, upgrade the engraving area, add an expansion box for the tube, and then put in a higher power tube. Sadly, my wallet disagrees with this plan currently.

I just got the extension all hooked up on my b1 40w and hooked up a camera and when the laser is finished with a cut or engrave and starts moving fast the alarm sounds and it starts homing ugh it didn't do thus before I extended ? Any suggestions
@LetsMakeAThing
@LetsMakeAThing 10 ай бұрын
Double check the settings that Longer had you change in the machine to account for the larger bed side. If they are off then the machine will alarm because it thinks you're trying to move the head out of bounds.

This may be old news, but, to turn off the flame detector, change the G-code from $45=1 TO $45=0 .. Also, If you are not using the network connector or the micro SD card/slot, a piece of black tape will keep out the dust and cutting crap....

Do you have any brands or links to fans to replace the one that comes with this model? (I know nothing about this) -- Also since making the video, have there been any updates from Longer about the issue you were experiencing? (even after the driver fix?)
@LetsMakeAThing
@LetsMakeAThing 9 ай бұрын
I don't have any links for fan replacement. There hasn't been any firmware updates for the laser, setting the correct driver in Lightburn manually has fixed that problem for me. In terms of the nozzle size, 2nd gen B1s have the correct nozzle size. Hope this helps!

Any news on the firmware and nozzle fix? I've been doing my research and been leaning towards this b1 30w. They just released the camera.
@LetsMakeAThing
@LetsMakeAThing Жыл бұрын
The 2nd gen B1's nozzles have the proper diameter opening so you shouldn't have that problem on new machines. Sadly, I haven't heard anything about the firmware. That being said, I've been using it a lot with the current firmware and with the proper driver selected in Lightburn. I haven't found any other issues, it's been a solid machine.

Another good video, I'm hooked... Thanks When you changed the homing speed, ($25), was that change written to the engraver or only to the session in Lightburn??? In other words, enter it ONE time or before each LB use??
