Thanks for the review. I had the WL Toys 12428 for about 1 week and the steering controller went out. I sent it back and got the $229 Redcat Racing Blackout XTE brushless and have had a ton of fun with it the past month. I didn't want to spend that much, but at $229, I still feel it is a very good deal.

If I remember rightly, from some of the videos I have watched, one of the differences between the JJRC and WLtoys vesion is that the JJRC doesn't have metal axle bearings where the axle goes through the control arm out to the wheel. The other is that the JJRC has a 390 motor, rather than a 540 motor. And, of course, the lights.

I think the differentials are supposed to be more solid than the WL toys

They're not the same truck..one is FY03 clone. JJRc also sale one of the wltoy clone..with different bodies. The parts arent the same..such as gear PITCH and different length dog bones/cvd...ect between the 2 trucks design. The DIFFERENTALs are DIFFERENT...Fy03 has 4 all metal spyder gears. The FY03 also has a CLUTCH The Wltoy..3 plastic spyder gears...No clutch Pick your pioson..lol...You can get up grades for both ( good news) You can get the virhuck ( fyo3 clone) for only $40 at the moment..it actaully has metal body panels.....You can also get the wltoy clone under a different for $54..at the moment it has sand paddle tires . It's blue...but also package in different brands They run around $70 average becuase the design had been repackaged to death.lol They should just save us all the head aches and install metal parts from the factory..MG servo too, for $100

You can get it on Ebay at the moment,,,I got 4-ea....so I can hop them up.lol. Paint them different colors...Keep a couple in stock condition. They're actaully decent stock...I just lower the shocks and battery tray so it wont tip over as much....You just have to go through the truck (t;s a hobby...plus it;s mass produce)...parts might be loose or too stiff. I rebuild the front diff in all of them...add better grease. Made sure it's not binding..The trucks goes faster bevuase there's less binding. i even install the tallest gears and Bigger and wider MT tire/wheels from a redcat KT-12....Loving it. it dosnt roll over as much. It just floats over the grass...It dose way better than the kt-12 The clutch shaft also hits the chassis little ,,cuasing more drag, Not a big deal..I just scrap the plastic a little... Check the clutch...to see if it's tight enough..ect. The truck front wheel actaully lift when i give it hard throttle, now. I pulled a 550 motor an old coreless drill ( High speed) i test it..it has wazzooo rpm than other 550. ...still havnt install it. i have fun just driving it as stock ( its becuase i have other more power toys..if i want to more aggressive..( luaching it off of big jumps or go 40 mph) There's no need to tear these truck up.... Im also waiting for a brushless..so I can convert one of them to brushless. It's still pretty good...keeping around $100-ea total with all the hop ups. They're Hobby grade toys without breaking the bank. I havnt had any problems with any of the trucks out of the box. That;s why Im keeping 2 in stock form...the Fy03 original or the Cady apple red virhuck. All ball bearings just like the FY03... i wanted the 1/10 version (blue)of it...but didnt pull the trigger. it was on sale or only $89..it went back up to $140-$150 I ran one of the virhuck at least 50 times...already...(stock just with bigger wheels) Nothing broke (yet)...which is alot more than I can say for my old tmaxxs or Savages.lol

These toys are a total blast. I had a FY03 and when that broke got the WL Toys variant. This color blue is very nice, but for my money, the lights on the WL Toys make all the difference, especially in dusk.

It's so awesome that you can buy a reasonable RC vehicle for under $100 now, it's perfect for anyone like myself getting into RC. I must say that I prefer the green over the blue. Hey guys! I've got the wltoys 12428 and the 12429, been building one with a brushless system and the other with a nice brushed crawler system. Recently bought this truck for my fiance because she's been wanting an RC of her own to play with and she liked the color. Might I say I'm impressed with the jjrc!!! So much so that I ordered another for myself the very same day we took hers on the first run. Somehow with the 390 motor the q39 just has more. All around. More speed, torque, and the servo is amazing compared to anything wltoys puts on their trucks. One thing I will mention is that the jjrc servo seems EXTREMELY sensitive to moisture, but is awesome in every other category. Also just got my landslide xte by redcat in the other day! Waiting on the batteries I ordered to take it on the maiden run :D

Have either of you ever entered an rc ground vehicle race? There was a time in the early 90s that l thought l wanted to. The tracks local to me at the time were a dirt track, a road course that had no local interest and a really big banked paved oval. It was sort of a 1/10 scale Darlington. I soon discovered that massive amounts of practice was going to be needed. My car wasn't as fast as the fastest of the experienced racers but l couldn't come close to running consistently fast laps. Watching the experienced guys race was a revelation. They were hanging the back end out and drifting lap after lap at speeds much faster than 1/10 scale.

Definitely this looks like a solid value. However, the WLtoys 12428 has a big advantage with its excellent lighting, in my opinion.

I'd have to kindly disagree with you after owning both for about 3 months. The q39 has all hex head hardware as opposed to the 12428 having Phillips head. The q39 overall just feels higher quality in general, has a faster/stronger servo; and even includes two different sized metal pinions for lower speed/higher torque or vice versa. Even with a smaller motor, my q39 is faster out of the box on the same 2s. I was so impressed with the q39 at it's price point I ordered a second the very same night I received my first. Edit: don't get me wrong, the 12428 is still a good rock racer for the $. I just feel that for about the same price the q39 is in another league. You can always buy a light kit for literally a few dollars, and hot glue the LEDs into the already drilled out light-buckets.

I bet that replacement and hop-up parts are interchangeable between the JJRC and WLToys versions. I bought a WL 12428 but haven't taken it out of the box yet. I always disassemble RC cars & trucks and grease 'em good before I ever take it out and run it. Plus I really don't like the green, so will paint it. That's a winter project though. --- One difference between the two brands is the battery; JJRC Q32 comes with a 1500mAh Lipo, the WLToys 12428 comes with a 1500mAh Li-ion.

Nice video, great car although one thing you forgot to check are the specs cause the 12438 has a 540 size motor whilst the Q39 has a smaller 390 size motor which also means they are not compatible parts wise. That and the 12428 should have a little more power

Did you test the speed of both the WL and the JJRC? Because as far as I know the Q39 has a smaller motor and is sold as a 35-40kmh car and the 12428 as 50+kmh I own the 12428 and I love it, also ordered the 12423 but haven‘t recieved it yet

You could add LED's to for that JJRC.....I was gonna cop this but ended up buying a Feiyue 03 eagle..both are almost exactly the same and some parts are even compatible...

I do like that Q39. It is just as good as the 12428 the lights arent a issue soon add a set. Good price point to $106 NZD..That on my wish list, the 12428 is out of stock at the moment. Only a couple of weeks to before flightfest...

I would love to see a max speed comparison! Something tells me that without the lights sucking voltage and with the lower CG the Q39 might just be a teeny tad faster! You guys should find out! :)

I like to lock my spider gears in the front diff and rear diff so there is no slip its just locked for straight hole shots

Hi RCSaylors - I own a JJRC Q39, but now it seems the ESC (FY-RX01), but suddenly go back and go forward (gas) does not work anymore. Left / Right still works... any ideas? Or should I switch to a different ESC with a different controller? Which one would you recommend?

You need to do a race/ green vs blue. Does look to favorably compare. Was the battery life short. It seemed to,to me.❔❔❔. Great review, fun as alway's. 😉

I bought this for one of my kids birthdays last month based on RC Sailors review and it came dead on arrival. So sad! Looked like an amazing truck. No more in stock so we couldn't even get a replacement. : (

Thanks for posting this. I was looking for an inexpensive RC car that i can drive around when it's too windy to fly my micro planes. Have a few of the toy ones but they get bogged down in the grass most of the time. This thing looks awesome and it can go just about anywhere. I'm just getting into FPV and I find myself putting cameras on everything. Can't wait to try this FPV. I just ordered 2 of them from Gearbest. Would like to get a couple of extra batteries. That blue does look very nice. I'm definitely a sucker for blue. Too bad it doesn't have the lights though like the 12428 does. Also for the coloring aspect, the green and black color scheme makes me think of the original Xbox, and maybe the Q39 could be PlayStation because of the blue and black color scheme. I think a wheel swap would look legit!

This car draws my attention a lot! Well, in my ignorance, I think that by having a 390-380 motor it will consume less energy than a 540 like the one in the 1/12 wl toys .... can a better quality variator and servo be fitted? How many upgrade options (are there)? i like this car! or the dune thunder 12891 from hbx (hailboxing) ... I think the wl toys 10428 ... 1/12 (wears the differential gears very quickly, and consumes the stock battery very quickly, that's why based on that, a jjrc q39 or a hbx 12891 is more efficient!

I have a chalange for you two. I have the 12428 and put an all in one fpv cam with 200mw vtx works great, how about putting cams on the q39 and 12428 then setting up a course or personal chalange and seeing which one is the true ground veh. master :) oh did i forget to mention you can only use your fpv goggles if you choose to accept this chalange i look foward to seeing that vid
