"This video is brilliantly put together, lots of great information and humor. Well done and thank you. I've been involved as a beta tester for SSL for a long time myself. I can't help but be positive about this company; they really listen to their customers, their software is super stable, and they keep coming up with new software and hardware. I work with Nuendo and used the Avid Dock and S1 until recently. The Eucon protocol works great, but the way SSL is continuously developing made me decide to switch to the UF8 and UF1. I've been using the UC1 (for over a year now). There are definitely a few things I'd like to see, such as 'follow track on selection' (I understand this is a Mackie protocol limitation), the ability to customize some assigned (or unassigned) buttons, and the ability to move the cursor faster with the jog wheel so you can quickly navigate your project on the timeline. But I have confidence that SSL will come up with solutions and continue to develop. This confidence is why I couldn't wait to switch to the SSL DAW controllers; they simply look much better too :-) Thanks again for your awesome video."

Setup Guide for Reaper and SSL equipment I have set up a separate mixing/mastering station in my studio using SSL equipment. I purchased a UC1, UF8, UF 1, SSL12, Fusion, Bus+ and Big Six. I have been using Reaper for about ten years but am not a power user. My goal was to get all of the SSL pieces working together with Reaper. Unfortunately SSL does not fully support Reaper in setting up the UC1, UF1 and UF8. So I had to wade in (over my head) into getting Reaper and all of the SSL equipment to play nice together SSL's technical support was responsive but they did not have knowledge of Reaper. I could not find any KZfaq videos or other information on how to configure all the this equipment together. So I decided I would offer a few comments on what eventually worked for me. The SSL User Manuals are very good in explaining the functions of the equipment. The Fusion and Bus+ and SSL12 provide no particular connection or configuration issues. They are easy to set up and operate. The SSL User manuals and KZfaq videos for the Big Six, UC1 and UF8 explain how to physically connect each piece to a computer (in my case a Windows 11PC). They also do a good job of explaining how to download the software - 360 plug in mixer, Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Bus Compressor 2. The biggest difficulties I encountered in this were due to my total inexperience with using iLok software manager. But the process eventually worked fine. So I suggest that one follow the SSL videos and User Guides. Just one comment. The Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Compressor 2 are VST's and it is best to allow the SSL downloader to put these in the default folder - which is the Steinberg VST Plugins folder. Pay attention to Reaper's warning that VST plugins should not be placed in the Reaper plugin/FX folder along with the standard Reaper plugins. It is important to recognize SSL's caution to not mix VST's and VST3 versions of the SSL plugins. The VST downloader will download VST and VST3 versions of the plugins. I just load the VST versions of the SSL plugins in my tracks in Reaper. With regard to the USB connections, I offer the following advice. Use either the USB cables that SSL provides or very high quality cables. Do no use any USB cables longer than 1 ½ meters. Do not use a hub for any connection. Connect the UC1 USB cable from the UC1 to the UF8 “thru” USB input (which is a USB type A input). I run a USB cable from the UF8 USB output (which is a USB type C connector) to my UF1. I then run a USB cable from my UF1 to my PC computer. I connect the Big Six USB output or the SSL12 output to a separate USB connection on my computer. There are essentially two aspects of connecting the SSL equipment to Reaper 1) Midi / MCU connections and 2) audio connections. After all the SSL software is installed, go to Reaper's Options > Preferences > Audio > Midi Devices. A table will pop up. There will be a table listing twelve SSL V MIDI Ports for Input and under that there is a table listing twelve SSL V MIDI Ports for Output. Under the Mode column of each table I enable all twelve ports. Do this by right clicking each port under Mode column. A window will pop up. Click enable. Do this for all input and output ports. Twelve MIDI inputs / ports and twelve MIDI outputs / ports are therefore enabled. It is not necessary to enable all twelve outputs and inputs but that is what I did and it works for me. Technically it is sufficient to only enable the first port for input and first port for output. (If you are daisy chaining more than one UF8, you do have to enable more than port 1 but I have not done that since I only have one UF8). Right click again on the SSL V-MIDI Port 1 line in the input table. The small window will again pop up. Click on “Enable input for control messages.” You do not have to do this (and cannot do it) for the SSL V-MIDI Port 1 line in the output table. Go to Options > Preferences > Control/OSC/web. Under the blank window, click Add. Another blank window will pop up. There will be a line titled “Control surface mode.” Click on the small down arrow to open up another window with a list of options. Select Mackie Control Universal (MCU). (If you are using more than one UF8, I think you also need to select Mackie Control Extender, but since I only have one UF8 I do not know for sure). Click OK at the bottom of the window. MCU is a protocol that allows the SSL equipment to communicate with and control the various Reaper functions. In Reaper, go to Options > Preferences > Audio Device and set up the parameters for you audio interface. This is no different that how you set up your audio interface normally. (You probably have already done this). I suggest at this point that you restart your computer. Then turn off everything - the computer, the Big Six, UF8, UC1, UF1, SSL12, Bus+ and Fusion. Then I do the following: The order is important. Turn on the UF8 and UC1. Turn on your computer. Start Reaper. Open the SSL 360. Check that the Options setting described above are sill there. Open a new track and ensure that you can find and open the Bus Compressor 2, Channel Strip 2 and Channel Strip 4k b. Turn on the Big Six if you are using it as your audio interface, or the SSL12 or other audio interface that you are using. Ensure that the USB connection light in the upper right of the Big Six is on. (I have found that if one turns on the audio interface before turning on Reaper, the UC8, UC1 and UF1 will not be happy and will pout. It will essentially refuse to talk with you or do much of anything at all except sit there with a blank stare on its face). In the SSL 360 software, choose Logic Pro for Layer 1. There is no option to choose Reaper. Reaper is not fully supported in this manner - er, not supported at all. (I have seen that someone chose to use Studio One instead of Logic Pro, and this might work. However, SSL technical support recommends using Logic Pro). Most of the soft keys of the UF1 and UF8 are already programmed with commands that correspond to Logic Pro commands. Some of these work with Reaper and some do not. I chose to reprogram all of the UF1 and UF8 soft keys. It is very easy to do. Moreover, I did not really like most of the commands that were per-programmed anyway. The SSL 360 video and the SSL User Guide for the 360 are very good at showing how to program the soft keys. I found it actually fun. So, for me everything is happy working together. I find it remarkable that the 360 mixer, UC1, UF8, UF1, SSL12, Big Six, Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Bus Compressor 2 plugins all correspond to each. When a control is moved in one, it immediately shows in all the others. Pretty cool I think. I also like that the transport controls in SSL 360 work. I duplicate these controls in the first group of soft keys on the UF8. However, this is unnecessary since the dedicated transport controls of the UF1 are excellent work flawlessly (for me anyway). I have also programmed the soft keys to do such things as save, open new project, metronome, undo and redo, snap and unsnap, etc. I like using these instead of resorting to my mouse. But everyone will have a different approach to all of this. Note that the third party plugin controls on the UF8 do not work with Reaper but SSL has been very clear about this, and to me it is not a big deal.

I did not know what scrubbing means ------ So I asked Bard: In audio recording, scrubbing is the process of moving the playhead or cursor back and forth across an audio waveform to listen to different parts of the recording. This is often done to find a specific sound or to identify a problem with the recording. The term "scrubbing" comes from the early days of audio recording, when engineers would literally scrub the tape with their fingers to find the desired section of the recording. Today, scrubbing is done using a mouse or other pointing device to move the playhead or cursor across the waveform. Scrubbing is a useful tool for audio engineers, producers, and musicians. It can be used to find specific sounds, identify problems with the recording, and make edits to the recording. Here are some of the benefits of scrubbing: It allows you to quickly navigate through an audio file. It allows you to listen to different parts of the recording without having to rewind or fast-forward. It allows you to identify problems with the recording, such as clipping or noise. It allows you to make edits to the recording, such as cutting, pasting, and looping. If you are working with audio, scrubbing is a valuable tool that you should learn how to use. Here are some of the ways to scrub an audio recording: Using a mouse: To scrub an audio recording using a mouse, simply move the cursor across the waveform. The audio will play back as you move the cursor. Using a jog wheel: A jog wheel is a physical control that is often found on audio interfaces and digital audio workstations. To scrub an audio recording using a jog wheel, simply turn the wheel forward or backward. The audio will play back as you turn the wheel. Using keyboard shortcuts: Many digital audio workstations have keyboard shortcuts that allow you to scrub an audio recording. These shortcuts vary from one DAW to another, so you will need to consult your DAW's documentation to learn what the shortcuts are.

LOL UC1 + UF1 sitting above the UF8: I was thinking along the lines of Softube's Console 1 mixing system with less of an angle. Very similar to the angle at which you have your units setup but with the UF8 sitting where your apple keyboard is. I bet the guy with Mixingtable could build a small case/stand and make it look pretty cool. I'm also not one that likes the monitor too close to my face as it irritates my eyes. If I can touch it, its too close so I have the depth on my desk. Having all 3 units side by side would be close to 37 inches wide.

@@Doctaj54 I think the idea more comes from the transport, jog wheel and master fader missing from UF8 as to why they designed UF1 - not UC1 missing a fader. UC1 was based on the original GUI designs which didn’t even have faders, plus if they did build a motorised fader into UC1, it would’ve probably only controlled the plugins output fader - which would’ve made more people unhappy as it wouldn’t be direct DAW control. I think what they’ve landed in is a good middle ground. Yeah I’m finding it hard to imagine having them set up the way you describe, but my brain instantly went to the mixingtable guy - I think you’d have to go with someone like him who can make something bespoke and nice looking if you wanted to do that setup. Would be interested to see it though, let us know if you end up trying

@@DRUMVILLE I was looking at things from a mixing prospective. It's what I do mostly. When the UF8 was released a while ago it looked ok but overall it was very similar to most fader controllers already on the market. I compared the UF8 directly to the S1 as a replacement for my Mackie Control Universal. I ended up feeling nothing unique about either one at all. I learned to use keyboard shortcuts in Protools a good bit which IMO was better than learning any DAW controller LOL. But when the UC1 dropped I thought it was pretty unique especially being that I was already using SSL's plugins in most of my mix sessions. I got to use it hands on and felt it was only missing that channel fader to make it great. I guess I was basically imagining the UC1 and UF1 as one single unit. But ya, the 3 units seems to complete the lineup and give the best options. I will most likely go with the UC1/UF1 only right now. UC1 on the left and UF1 on the right like yours. And it would have been nice if they equaled 17 inches sitting side by side to match the width of the UF8.
@DRUMVILLE
@DRUMVILLE Жыл бұрын
@@Doctaj54 ya I agree with you, it would’ve been nice if UC1 + UF1 would equal the same width as UF8, but looking at UF1 now, it would maybe feel a little cramped if it were any smaller. I’m sure there’s a reason it’s the size it is too - probably components related. The big screen probably requires some extra space, and UF1 also doesn’t have a power brick like UC1 and UF8, so I’m assuming the PSU stuff is all internal.

So a couple of quick questions. The track arming appears not to work correctly. If I track arm channel 1 no problem, same is true for 9, 17, 25 etc. if I track arm 2 to 8 only track 1 arms 10 to 16, track 9 arms etc? Binned prefs reset things no change! Also if I don’t track arm but “accidentally” hit the transport record button, the channel that is selected (not armed) goes into record, if I have a channel that is record armed and I hit record but another channel is selected, everything works as expected, the rec armed track is the only one that records. Any ideas? The next is a question re plugin control, so for the sake of argument I have a pro Q3 on say channel 1, I hit plugin mode enable the q3, 4 parameters come up in the display above the Vpots, the same parameter is above the master channel fader, How do I get any of the parameters above boot 2,3,4 to appear on the master fader vpot, that I could then use flip mode for? Using a vpot to scroll frequency is just very slow on the proQ3 but flipping to fader is much better. 3rdly focus mode controlling a plugin parameter is very clunky and unsmooth, as it is a gnurled rotary pot, that appears to be velocity sensitive, if you scroll slowly on it, the plugin parameter does not move, scroll faster and it moves but of course much too quickly for resolution control, automation writing etc. If anybody can answer any of these please do, SSL have been hopeless, emailed tech support twice and no reply!

There's a lot you don't mention which makes this more difficult to understand - are you referring to using just a UF1 on its own, any other SSL peripherals? What DAW etc? I've just assumed some stuff, so will answer what my best guess is. UF1 doesn't have a Record Arm button, so it's difficult to answer your question as I'm not sure exactly what you are doing here. Maybe you have set up a soft key to the DAW command for "Rec/Ready"? I've just set this up, and it works fine for me, no issues. As I scroll through tracks the Rec Arm soft key will record arm the selected track. Alternatively you could set the soft key to instead be a Key Command, and set it to your DAWs keyboard shortcut for record arming the selected track. Regarding plug-in control, if I'm understanding correctly, then unfortunately what you are describing is a limitation of the MCU DAW control protocol, there's not really a way to move individual plug-in parameters onto the single fader. Parameters are in banks of 8 and the fader, and you scroll through them 1 bank at a time, not individually. Of course you could do this on a UF8 where you have the full 8 faders available. Not ideal, but it just is what it is with the old protocol. SSL are working hard and adding more and more functionality to 360, which will hopefully end up allow us more modern control over our DAW. Lastly with the focus mode pot. Focus mode is essentially just your mouse's scroll wheel. If you move it a single click it may appear as if it's doing nothing on some plug-ins, but it actually is. Do a couple more clicks and you will eventually see the plugin respond. It comes down to the individual plugin and the resolution settings the developer has implemented for mouse scroll. Fab Filter Pro Q 3 has very fine resolution to allow for ultra precise dialling in of EQ and curves - up to 3 decimal places 12.345hZ for example. That's what you are experiencing. Try some other plugins - the SSL stuff is nice and smooth as they design it with this in mind, but loads of other plug-ins work really well with Focus mode too. Some mice allow for user customisation in adjusting the resolution of your scroll, maybe SSL could add this as a feature for Focus mode - I will suggest.

@@DRUMVILLE Hi it’s Logic Pro 10.5.1, but the problem re track arming also happens on a machine running Monterey logic 10.7.1. The track arming is a standard button can’t remember whether it’s page 4 or 5. When you load up 360 and select Logic Pro as daw 1, these are the default commands. So it’s not just my system. So just the SSL UF1. Interestingly I have an icon platform m plus, which has no problems with the track arming, I can also run at the same time as the SSL, again no problems . The most annoying issue apart from the select to record, is if you haven’t selected to record, but hit record, the selected track goes into record even if not rec enabled! Thanks for the info re plugin parameters, does seem a bit mad that you can move the fader and pan for all tracks in banks of 8, but not each plugin parameter across the Vpots. Onto the master fader/vpot. I think they still have a lot of work to do on 360. Not sure why they don’t do what Eucon did and basically supersede a 25 year protocol!

@@themattprofessor I’m in Logic 10.8.1 on macOS Sonoma and not having those record arm issues, so I’m not sure what else to suggest to help fix it I’m afraid. I would definitely try my suggestion of switching the soft key to instead be a key command of Control+R (record arm for Logic) and see if that makes any difference though. Some of the built in MCU DAW implementations have previously been messed up by Apple who decided to update stuff that didn’t need updated and in the process screw up everyone’s workflow! Example - a while back they changed the Shift function of Logic’s MCU profile on a whim and broke loads of features… 🙄 Key command would supersede any of that, worth a try. Yep, tracks will automatically drop into record, even if not record armed. That’s just what Logic does, nothing to do with the SSL stuff. I agree they have some distance to go still - especially with Logic - but some of the stuff they are able to do now with VST3, you can see 360 is on track to become their own protocol combined with a bunch of other features.

SSL have got to include their two main channel strips and bus compressor with this if they want to grab the market which is there for the taking. I have an SSL 12, I love the 360 software and I think this UF1 is incredible but when you add the price of the two channel strips and the bus compressor it just becomes a non choice. SSL... include those 3 plugins or at least offer a heavy discount and at £600 the UF1 becomes a game changer! 🤔

SSL Meter is included with UF1, 4K B, CS2 and Bus Comp 2 are all included with UC1. You wouldn’t add the price of buying those plugins alongside a UF1, it would be far cheaper to just buy a UC1 and get the full SSL integration.

Does the UF1 follow track selection in Logic? The info on the SSL site was kinda non conclusive....! It implies that the BANK of faders will follow track selection in logic, but not necesarily the actual fader within that bank. How did you find this working? thankyou!!
@DRUMVILLE
@DRUMVILLE Жыл бұрын
Currently, if you only had a UF1, selecting a track in Logic will show that selected bank on UF1. So unless the track you select is the first track in the bank (or whatever number you have Fader Select mode set to) it will not directly show on UF1, you would have to scroll a couple from the bank selection. If you have a UF8 also, it becomes a little easier as you see the entire selected bank appear in UF8 including the selected track. Definitely a little bit of an annoying workflow, but its unfortunately a limitation of MCU… but SSL have already got something cooking for this 😉

Hi Martin, I’m guessing you are the same Martin who emailed me with this this morning 😂 Yes it is true you can do this. Just to clear some stuff up though, it’s not strictly related to Logic Pro - this is a Mackie Control protocol issue and just how the protocol has always worked. You can also do this for other DAWs and any other controller that also uses MCU protocol - of which there are plenty from the last 25 years or so! 👀 I remember doing this on my old Mackie and Behringer controllers. It is certainly useful however these days I find this approach way too time consuming as I have far too many plugins I would want to control 😂 Rest assured, SSL are working on some new ways to control third party plugins 👀

Attention if you use the UF1 in combination with the UF8 (Cubase), you cannot select the lower last 7 tracks on the UF1. This is because the UF8 always selects 8 adjacent tracks and the UF1 can only select the top (left) track of the UF8 at a time. UF8 and UF1 are synchronised. This means that the bottom last 7 tracks are always not selectable for the UF1. This is real rubbish.

This UF-1 looks half bangin’ and half fiddly puddle. Not nearly as compelling as the other two components in this series. I’ve got a UC1 and two UF8s, and I was hoping for a SMALL transport control with other master section features that I could add in to the hardware setup, but sadly I don’t think this is it. I’m not saying the functions aren’t great - they are. It’s the old buried functions, sub-menus, modes, whatever. It’s too much to have to do from memory. For the six to ten other engineers who work here in a given month, it’s yet another device with a ton of hidden functions they’d have to take the time to LEARN and MEMORIZE. They already have a lot of that in their work environments from all the other vendors’ tools they need to use along the way. The end result always seems to be that they just won’t use the device at all… or they will only use it for the most basic functions, because they… just… don’t… have… the… time. So I think I just cannot put this piece in with the others. ☹️👎 If this was just for someone who is using this as their own interface 100% of the time, then I could see this being a nice addition. Reminds me of the Roland stuff from the 90’s and the 00’s that was a handful of buttons and knobs, and a hundred sub-menus attached to each. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

The thing is UF1 is actually not all that different to UF8 - most of the features are exactly the same because is just MCU protocol… and again that makes them function exactly the same as any other DAW controller really. If you know how to use Mackie protocol, you know how to use these devices. Most of the modes and menu diving is all MCU stuff. But I do agree with your point, MCU isn’t the slickest and if you don’t know how to use it, it’s not all that straightforward. So having it in a studio that is used by other engineers coming in and out… I can see your issue… but then again, it’s MCU, it’s the same protocol used by most other DAW controllers, so if they are using controllers in other studios, they should be able to use these ones just fine

I was thinking the exact same thing. I have a Uf8 but really just use it for mixing with faders and panning. @DRUMVILLE
@DRUMVILLE Жыл бұрын
@@ARCASIAUK it’s totally down to how much you use any of the extra features and menus of Mackie Control really. I pretty much only use Pan, Send and Plugin. When you learn one, you learn how they all work though. If you don’t use any of them, you don’t really need to worry about learning anything or menu diving. If we’re talking about the features behind the Mode knob or switching to a second DAW layer, it’s literally one very obvious button press, it was never really a problem for me 🤷‍♂️

I don’t get where you are pulling out this narrative of me admitting a software controller is better than a hardware compressor, it’s absolute nonsense and just you trying to validate yourself and your insecurity about this. One crucial flaw in your argument that might upset you and send your brain scrambling to find other justifications for your argument - I didn’t buy UF1 😱 I worked on the product development with SSL and used one of the early production models to make this video. Just make music Justin and enjoy the process. You don’t need to get caught up in stuff like this, it’s completely pointless to be insecure about your own equipment, be happy with what you’ve got, and if you’re not happy, get something else. If you don’t like hardware, nobody is forcing you to use it, but there is no need to be telling yourself that your M1 Mac must be better than an analogue bus compressor because it has a more powerful CPU..? It’s a nonsense argument. Just accept they are two different things and move on 🙂 Insecurities will get you nowhere in life dude, accept you for you, be happy with yourself and stop being overly concerned with the choices other people make for extremely trivial things like them choosing to use a hardware compressor. Live your life bro. I wish you all the best and hope you get better soon 💜

You know what would be cool? Recall integration with the fusion using this software

Sure, on paper. That would be impossible though, unless we’re talking about a re-design of Fusion and a brand new V2 release.
