With the most recent release of the SSL UF-1 Controller, we'll put the full SSL Control Surface system to the test with the UC-1 and UF-8. We'll set up a session in ProTools, then turn the computer screen off and mix a whole song using nothing but the SSL Control Surfaces and included SSL Plugins. It's as close as you can get to a full SSL Console that anyone can realistically afford!

Just wanted to say that I bought the SSL UF8 and UC1 in order to have a more tangible feel for mixing and automation, and watching your video as I try to navigate the setup has been tremendously helpful, and watching/listening to you mix without having the visuals of Pro Tools overwhelming and affecting the mixing process, has pretty much sold me on this. Thank you again, and definitely subscribing!

I love this song and your video. Especially the small steps you take when operating the individual controls with which you create your good sound. It shows once again how important the quality of the recording is. I have UF8, UC1 and the UF1 and as hardware the ssl Bus Plus and the Fusion and everything works perfectly together. Thank you for your great work.

Great video and I love the fact you mixed without a screen though in reality I epexct I wouldnt approach it like that I love the fact that I could if I wanted too. One thing that stood out for me from a workflow perscpective is why when you press the solo button doesnt the UC1 immediatly change to that channel. It would save loads of time rather than you having to select it. Hopefully SSL can do something in the software that allows that to happen as a switch on/switch off function. All the best, R

Your method of selecting which channel you would edit EQ and dynamics was the rotary dial on the UC1. Is there a way you can select a track on the eight fader unit, And have the EQ Controls automatically be editing that channel?

Great video. Are you mixing in DAW mode or 360 plugin mode?
@MillSounds

I think I was in the normal DAW mode. I played around with 360 for a bit, it was easy to adjust to but I was more comfortable in ProTools. Especially with some of the parallel processing and stuff, it made more sense to me for the video.

Yep, that is my conclusion as well. I had the Avid S3....expensive, beautiful looking controller, which unfortunately didn`t do anything for my workflow. Everything was just quicker with the mouse and keyboard. Then I bought the Softube Console 1, which again is lovely, but is way too limiting(let´s face it, we use other plugins than just softube and UAD). So here we are, back to the mouse and keyboard + a stream deck (with actually is wonderful)

What is the difference between using all 3 of these or just buying the Nucleus 2?
@PaulBondMusic
@PaulBondMusic 7 ай бұрын
I have used a Nucleus 2 in the past. On a positive, it is also a simple interface and has two mic pre's which is nice, but as a controller, I find it slightly clunky! ... You soon get frustrated trying to manipulate plugins on the Nucleus, but the way that the UC1 works with it's software counterpart is a breeze to work with. My mixes come together faster and as stated in the video... I agree - I prefer to mix without using my eyes. In essence I think that SSL have just made everything a lot slicker with these units.

Holy crap, look at that bass cone of the monitor, over his left shoulder. I wonder what that type of speaker damage does to the bass response?? Maybe it's time to get a a new monitor, to replace the one that is damaged??
@MillSounds
@MillSounds 3 ай бұрын
I'm never going to hear the end of that damn speaker cone 🤣..... It was sent in to Barefoot, it tested perfectly fine and didn't need to be replaced. I took a gamble on a used pair with that damage, and it paid off and I saved a lot of money. As always, I appreciate the "well meaning" feedback 😛
@thelzn1918
@thelzn1918 7 ай бұрын
If you compress and then lower the gain..... don't you loose all the compression?
@MillSounds
@MillSounds 7 ай бұрын
That's just gain staging. Compression isn't happening all the time, only at certain times during peaks. I'm changing the output gain that's happening after the compression, it's just proper gain staging. A lot of times we get tricked into thinking that compression is doing more than it is, simply because compression can make something louder as well. By adjusting gain after the compression to match the gain level before compression, you get a more accurate idea of what's going on and what the compressor is actually doing (as opposed to "thinking" things sound better simply because they're louder). The other factor here is that depending on what part of the video you're watching, I'm setting up my mix to have some compression over the whole master bus so I can mix into that compression. If you're going to mix into a compressor over your whole mix like that, it's important to maintain proper gain staging during the whole mixing process to insure you're not just continually making everything louder and overloading the bus compressor.

I love the idea of turning off the computer screen. If you were using 3rd party plugins, like compressors, reverb etc. I take it you would need a screen then?
@MillSounds
@MillSounds 5 ай бұрын
I think if I were using other plugins and another control surface, the learning curve would be a lot higher. It would just take some time to learn your control surface and how every different plugin maps to it. The fun thing about the SSL control surfaces is that everything matched visually, so it's easy to take your eyes off the screen almost immediately.

@MillSounds 24 күн бұрын

@steensvanholm 23 күн бұрын
@@MillSounds One of those people? Hm, I did not know that question belonged to a people. For me it was just a question that popped up, when listening thoroughly to your proces during the whole video. I have never done live sound other than for myself (and I am not a drummer). Logically though, I picture a band in front of me when I hear music that sounds live-ish as in this case. This is typically a (double) mono experience, and thus we ought to mix everything in mono, but stereo came around to simulate that we were actually there in the room with the band. That would in principle mean that a drum set played by a right handed drummer always had the small tom and the hihat to the right. Therefore, I was fishing for the answer that the drummer in this particular band might be left handed and that you respectfully reflected that which would have been a very elegant and subtle gesture in my opinion. I did not know I was walking right into a storm (if that is what I did). :-)
@MillSounds
@MillSounds 23 күн бұрын
@@steensvanholm I was trying to joke with you, sorry it did not come across that way. You did not walk into a storm, this is a common thing in the audio engineering community and is usually joked about. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to pan the drums, but you'll find many engineers strongly prefer to do it one way or another. If you started out doing live sound and were mixing shows in stereo, you would be very used to mixing from the audience perspective. When I first starting learning in the studio, I also started to play the drums a bit and was use to hearing the drums from a drummers perspective. Most drummers want drums panned from the drummers perspective in their headphones as well when recording, so I've become accustomed to doing it that way. I've had a few clients request the drums be mixed from the audience perspective on their mixes, I still have to mix from the drummers perspective and flip the stereo image at the last minute to send to the client. When you originally posted, I thought you were trying to joke with me. Again, this is one of those on going jokes in the audio community, and people "joking" give other engineers a hard time when they do it a different way. You can do it however you want though!

@MillSounds
@MillSounds 5 ай бұрын
Oh man, I've got plenty of room. This desk is huge and usually has my API console on it (It's 58 inches, almost 150 cm wide). I did it this way for the video, as it was easier to fit everything in frame that way. If I would have laid all three controllers out side by side, I would have ended up with a really wide camera angle and it would be harder to see the controls. I did that for you so you could see everything better 🤣
