Because everyone but the deranged idiots in charge of Spiderman agreed having SPiderman litterally get cucked and demonized by the story was going way too far. We're used to him suffering at this point but ... this was just pure mean spirited. You could tell someone on the staff HATED Spiderman with every fiber of their being and got into Marvel just to destroy Spiderman. THeir entire life was devoted to character assasianting a comic book character.

Is it marvel or is it the fans? I could see a world where fans would get bored with spiderman having a happy home, but fighting villains all the time. It also seems like a lot of interesting story arcs for the character arise from the fact that he’s always juggling his need to protect the city with his need to protect his loved ones

For those who don't know the shit with Doctor Light, he sexually assaulted the wife of Elongated Man as well as many other women. It got the point that some members in the League agreed for Zatanna to use her powers to alter his mind so that he wouldn't be a threat but they accidently lobotomized him instead. This especially since after that story sexual assaulting people is basically *all* Dr. Light talked about and did until The Specter's overpowered yet useless and hypocritical self got around to killing Dr. Light by turning him into a living candle and having him melt...like a hundred+ rapes later.

Fun fact, the part about the writers making up Hal Jordan's reason for turning evil as they went along is 100% accurate to real life. Because Green Lantern sales were low, they basically shoved aside the previous plans and said "Okay, Hal's evil now, you have 4 issues to explain it, GO."

As if that wasn't bad enough, Peter got possessed by the Green Goblin and tried to kill Paul while going on a rant about how Mary Jane was his property or something, which just further made him look bad even if Mary Jane didn't really hold that against him in the end.

@@thewalrus45Even as someone who likes Kyle and dislikes Hal, I agree that the editorial mandates that led to that state of affairs were idiotic. It probably didn't help that while Hal's initial descent into madness was actually comprehensible and decently written (from what I recall), what followed with Parallax, "Extant", Zero Hour, and everything else was... less so. I only disagree with the common consensus of "Hal was character assasinated" because I question if he even had much of a characterization TO assassinate, being arguably the most bland character in his own series before the destruction of Coast City. Still, bringing Hal back (and the subsequent vast expansion of the Lantern mythos to the point of arguably becoming more interesting than the rest of the DC universe combined) was a good decision... that unfortunately opened the floodgates for the substantially less well-executed return of Barry Allen, a character who then became infamous for constant retellings of Flashpoint and stealing plots and relevance from Wally West - because he simply had nothing else to work with from his own era. But Dan DiDio had to satisfy his loathing of sidekicks and "aging the characters"! Funny how that line of "logic" ties into basically all the most poorly-recieved comic developments of the current millennium to date.

And this was due to Doc Ock being (I'm pretty sure the word is ) insulted that Peter never got a doctorate because while in Peter's body, nobody called him Dr. Parker. 1:18 I love this because originally writers killed Gwen off for being the boring "just Peter's girlfriend" and everyone loved MJ because of how she felt like her own character and refreshing. Cut to today and Gwen has had SO many glowups and unique story beats (literally across dimensions). Gwen has found so much success in so many unique iterations. Meanwhile MJ has become nothing more than Marvel Editorial plot device to keep Peter at the same status quo. She and Peter are lucky to get else world story where the focus is on their daughter. Gwen ironically dodged a bullet dying. At least we have the new ultimate universe.

Irony is, Gwen was originally intended to be the iconic girlfriend, but even Stan Lee admitted MJ was more interesting, Gwen dying was considered a big deal at the time because it not only stuck, but it also *developed* Peter's character to accept it, (what writers since fail to get so fridging women is just for shock value and maybe making way for a new love interest,)... ...But then Gwen was *only* known for being the dead girlfriend for so long that her actual character was forgotten until Emma Stone's portrayal and the AU version in the comics made her relevant and more interesting than ever. Now Gwen is the new MJ and the only thing the comic book writers do with (616) MJ is play keep away from Peter because they have no other ideas than that and making him miserable.

They did kind of retcon Hal Jordan. Instead of him going insane from the grief and trauma of seeing his home city destroyed, they made it so that he was also possessed by a magical yellow psychic parasite who was the embodiment of the concept of fear in the entire universe.

I think it’s been rereretconned to Hal overpowering Parallax with his will (as in Parallax was never fully in charge) but Hal mentally wasn’t the same. We see Parallax Hal from Zero Hour a few more times and he never seems Parallax-y. Always fully in control (despite being insane). He even hints that he’s well aware of Parallax in him. He was in Green Arrow recently but I haven’t read that, last I saw him he was in the main universe (along with current Hal! There’s two Hals) hunting down Sinestro Corps members… who I think are more anti-heroes at this point so idk

@leviticusprime4904 While this is just my take and opinion on, I think this is why they did what they did with his character. The writers who were putting him into the comic thought they could add some form of realism into this already villainous character. If someone had the same powers as Dr. Light, and they were willing to push the bounderies of what they could get away with, this would probably have been the result. What backfired, however, was that they did not expect the sort of backlash they would receive by writing him in this sort of light (pun unintentional). So now they are afraid to bring him back because of the backlash that was received, when they could try to retcon some bullshit and remove that certain trait.

I blame Frank Miller going insane during the DKR run for what happened with Dick. Tim Drake I don't feel anyone really knows what to do with. The plot of One More Day is that Aunt May dies, and Spidey is so sad that he tries to go back in time to save her. When that fails Mephisto, who's like an actual demon from Hell, appears to him and says he will bring Aunt May back, and all in exchange for some reason breaking up his marriage with Mary Jane, so their daughter would never exist and never become the superhero Spidergirl who would have been Mephisto's arch-nemesis in the future. This sounds insane, but that's pretty much what happens.

As it turns out, the combined efforts of Reed Richards, Doctor Strange, Elixir, and Anti-Venom among others are not up to the task of fixing a bullet wound. Then God shows up to talk to Peter and refuses to help before telling him to get his lazy ass back to work being Spider-Man. Then he makes his deal with Mephisto.

There was a fic that does have Doctor Doom find out and decide to help Spidey to show his superiority towards Mephisto and Reed Richards, but again, canonically Spider-Man sells his marriage to save Aunt May (who is okay with being dead) from a non-magical bullet wound that none of the doctors can fix.

To be fair, the new Ultimate Spider-Man run has Pete and MJ together again. Like, together together. Married with children together. Supporting each other in their major job decisions together. It's a breath of fresh air.

Doctor Light was way worse. Anissa didn't take no for an answer Light snuck onto the Watchtower, ran into Sue Dibny on accident and thought "no one can hear you in space." He also deduced several secret identities and mentioned that Flash wears a wedding ring under his gloves. Mind you, for decades prior to this Doctor Light was as big a threat as Doofenschmirtz or Shocker

Yea, because most of them don't have stable marriages themselves and want Spidey to reflect that. JMS and Nick Spencer wrote prime PeterMJ comics, with Nick Spencers end goal for his run being to return the marriage. Marvels most famous What-If scenario was 'What-If Mayday Parker lived' which spawned the whole MC2 universe. Currently Ultimate Spider-Man(6160) outsells ASM every month, consistently being top5. RYV was also a successful AU story with it's only real fault being the time skip done to ensure a satisfactory end because it was about to be canceled. The marriage was never the problem, the writers and their editors made it seem like it was.

An event way later called "Blackest Night"‚ a space zombie event‚ had her reanimated and describe to Kyle in detail how she was killed and stuffed into said fridge (‚ though the fandom wiki says she showed the process through her power ring‚ so I might be misremembering).
