Well... if it could go wrong it did - not the best way to start a 400km :)
Enjoy, and if you have any questions at all just post in the comments and happy to answer them there or if there are a lot I will film a separate video. Nothing is too daft to ask. Well maybe it is. We will see eh?! :)
Here is the ride: / strava

Ahhh it definitely is!!!!! My first 400km I literally had to have someone help me take my shoes and leg warmers off around 350km as I was so pooped. I actually had a little sob to myself. If you want it and put in time in the saddle you can ride as far as you like :)

@@monkeyx17 when I started I was averaging 10 or 12 miles per day. Now I average 20 - 30 miles 5 days a week. If it weren't so hot and humid here I could do more but I'd need more days to recover. For instance it was already 27C here at 9am.

That was on top of a 9-5 job, bike commute to work and other rides. It's all do-able In audax world but you have to be able to afford it in money and time.

This is really inspiring! I have never done longer rides than 200km, but I've done a few of those. This year my plan is to increase it to 250km (to start with), 300km later on would be nice. I'm going from Germany to my parents in Sweden next week, and instead of flying I decided to do a mixture of train+ferry+cycling. I'll do one long ride each weekend (on my way there, and on my way back), of about 200-240 km each. It'll be the longest solo rides so far! (Previous longest solo: 165km). My friends and parents think I'm crazy but after watching your 420km ride I got another push and more motivation! I like how you recorded this ride! I'm also planning to create a little video of my adventure. My biggest concern right now is how to bring a 15" macbook pro on my roadbike 😬😁 (I will work remotely so I need to bring it). This will be interesting!

420KM !!!!! Katie, this is ridiculous. You did all that after spending a week in blah zone. You climbed, hiked, and just kept going. Even when some lady tried to literally crush your bike! Unbelievable. This video should be part of some training course. People should realize this is what they mean when they say if you get a bunch of lemons , you make a lemonade!! After all that and you get some rest and you're like ok let's plan the next route! This is definitely the spirit. We have to figure out your spirit animal because it's definitely something fierce. :D Way to go Katie!

To try and alleviate sore hands, I use clip-on tri-bars to get a different position on the bike and take the pressure off my hands. These don't put you in an aero/tucked position as they are on risers, but provide a comfortable alternative when the roads are flat. Used them recently on a 300Km and had no issues with my hands.

3 questions, Katie. 1. With regard to food on these long rides, how much do you take at the start and how much do you pick up along the way?; 2. with regard to distance, do you break it down into 'segments' in your head to pace yourself to ensure you don't blow up before the end? ; 3. how much is mental and how much is physical in terms of approaching these distances? Thanks in advance (if you have time to answer). GREAT channel.

I take enough to last maybe half the ride. Just as I’m vegan and know my stuff is nicer than shop bought. But I will just make sure I know where the stops are. Can definitely relate to the feeling of being driven into on purpose by someone. Luckily, just as in your case, both me and my bike came out of it mostly unscathed. Some drivers don't see cyclists as people it seems, or they want to show some kind of road dominance - how much of an inconvenience we are to them. Plenty of other dangerous situations random drivers have put me into, just to show off. And yes, I do drive a car as well. That kind of anger towards a group of people is alien to me, though. It has no place on the road, no matter the mode of transportation. If things go truly bad, everyone is f**ked. Be kind to your fellow road users, peeps.

Reminds me of the last time I rode through North Yorkshire, when I managed to plot a route along a path right through a cow field...all my long routes in new places seem to take an off-road detour at some point! Incredibly steep roads around that neck of the woods, was almost scraping my nose on the tarmac of Skinningrove Bank.

Firstly what an incredible achievement , you certainly are very very fit .Can you tell there is a but? I’m cycling LEJOG over 10 days starting tomorrow and that and the comment from the chap that had just done the ‘Fred’ got me thinking .I wonder if you ever reflect on your rides/ challenges and the impact on people who watch your channel . We set ourselves challenges but then they are put into perspective by your escapades ,so yes in one sense you are an inspiration ,but countering that is the “diminishment “of our personal challenges . It’s a thought that I’m sure you have had but is something that is rarely ,if ever ,commented on by your subscribers . I suppose if one is susceptible to those negative thoughts the answer is don’t watch 😁

Heeey, if I ever see someone do something bigger / harder than me I only ever see it as inspiration and encouragement that maybe I could do it too. And from your comments I think it’s the same from you all who watch my videos.

Thanks for you reply and your comments in your latest video . My comment and your reply highlight the tension between you,as a you tube creator ,and me as a you tube consumer .Creators have a whole bunch of reasons why they create videos and not all of those fit into how consumers of those videos interpret the content. This , of course , is outside your control . I realise that you tube has a voracious appetite for content and that posting a video of a pootle round the local park is not going to set the world on fire nor is it going to satisfy your sponsors. However I was merely trying to suggest a bit of reflection /recognition on the possible negative impact of some of your content . After all we are all only to well aware of the insidious nature of social media . Remember not all of us have the time or inclination to spend as much time on the bike as yourself. I absolutely don’t doubt that you want to inspire people , and that you do , but maybe just spare a thought for us mere cycling mortals .You may think that you are inspiring all the time but sometimes I just think why am I bothering as my 150k looks pathetic !!As I said that’s out of your control and we don’t have to watch do we ? On a positive I think your channel is brilliant with informative and inspiring content ( mostly )… I know that’s a surprise !!

I have the Yorkshire Beast Sportive in 2 weeks and even though I know I'm capable of riding it inside the cut off time, it doesn't stop me worrying about it and having big doubts. This video (and the Strava activity) genuinely gives me a bit of a boost. Thanks, and well done :)

I LOVE Trapping Hill....i was gunna suggest you to do a full gas effort up there, but thought might be to far from Manchester!! Did you look back and see the view over the reservoir? Great effort on Sutton Bank as well always crazy busy up there so not many people cycle it!! All in all a quite legendary day out looks like...💪💪

Omg your arse must be killing...! How you can do that on a bottle of sugary water and a pot noodle is bonkers! Superhuman effort! Love that typical northerner weather thing. I found myself saying omg it’s SO BLOODY HOT, its too hot ride my bike, last weekend...after weeks of moaning about biblical rain and hail in May!

Well done on sticking to it and completing such a long ride. You might be better off with a right angled USB cable, they have barely any amount sticking out the bottom of your device. You might be able to keep the Wahoo the right way up while you charge it.
