I hold an "IMC" or IR(R) rating (unique to the UK), but haven't used it much, although I have logged 50+ hours of IFR time over 8 years. My next pilot training milestone is to get my full Instrument Rating, which I hope to do using the CBIR (competency based instrument rating) course.
Before I can do that, I aim to become proficient at all the basics of practical instrument flying. Doing this alone as a PPL holder is challenging.
This video shows a valuable practice IFR/IMC flight which flushed out a number of currency-related unknowns and highlighted my weaknesses in RT and other procedures.
I flew from Dunkeswell to Newquay for several procedures then returned. Although this edited version looks like all-VFR conditions, a significant part of the flight was in full IMC, which you can see in the full 2 hour un-cut version of this flight here: • Real-time 2hr Solo IMC...
