Flow drills are an amazing dexterity exercise and stamina builder. And with all the variations you can implement, it's a great training element for practicioners of all levels. In this video we're taking a look at core elements of a double edge flow drill, using descending cuts. Throughout several video's we'll build upon this core, working towards a full flowdrill, as popularized in the #HistoricalEuropeanMartialArts scene by early pioneers such as Matt Galas and the likes.

Initially this was going to be a series for my H.E.M.A. club MARS ( www.mars-swordfighting.com ) but seeing as we've once again gone into a partial lockdown, there might be plenty of other people looking to do some #Longsword practise at home. This is a great drill for beginners to familiarize themselves with these movements! Hope you'll enjoy this #Tutorial :)

Thank you so much for this flow drill. I had a blast trying to get it down smooth. Felt super cool as I started to get the timing of hands, body, and feet. Sword seemed to magically float. Its always nice to have a new mechanical challenge. Oh and you weren't kidding about it being a good shoulder workout. 👍

Fun fact: if memory serves me correctly, this particular one actually started as a practise drill for montante, so it should work great for spadones! :)

These drills are so helpful - thank you for filming this and providing such a detailed explanation. I am just getting into HEMA and don't often have sparring partners, so I find solo drills extremely useful and eventually fun... EVENTUALLY 🤣 Thanks again!!

Could you please explain the difference of Wechsel and Nebenhut for me please? Is it the same but only to different sides? Right foot in front + sword on the left = Wechsel / left foot in front + sword on the right = Nebenhut?
@MauriceBooij
@MauriceBooij 2 жыл бұрын
Almost, yes! Additionally, in Wechsel the 'false edge' aka 'short edge' is directed forward/upward. In Nebenhut, the false edge is towards yourself, presenting the long edge forward. 16th century fencing master Joachim Meyer describes these positions with the footwork as you mentioned, but in practice you can also do a Wechsel on the right, and a Nebenhut on the left, as long as the edge orientation and footwork support eachother. A simplified way to look at it could be: Wechsel might be a termination point of a descending cut with the long edge (making it an ideal starting point for rising cuts with the short edge); and Nebenhut could almost be seen as an upsidedown Vom Tag, and as a starting point for a rising cut with the long edge.

@@MauriceBooij Hey, thanks for your fast answer, Maurice. Just after my question I left for holidays so I missed to reply directly. Love your flow drills, they are a good solo exercise.

The shoes are just regular Puma indoor sports shoes. Most regular sports shops will carry them, or similar models.
