Those are the two knives I have in my bug-out bag and my survival pack and my camping gear now. Mine's the ranger grip 79 not the 78 but only difference is the corkscrew and I got a sail needle in the cork screw. The reason I went with that was the exact reason you said the red ever read lanyard on it and a red lanyard on my garber as well. I lost camo colored knives many many times as a kid and learned that Brite colors are best for a woods knife JUST IN CASE you drop it or set it down in a goofy spot.

@recall5814 Hey Shawn! Just watching this now & as usual, awesome content. I noticed part of the L /.7 trap almost looked like a wooden chess piece which made it neater & as I watch, hopefully you'll address why you blunted out both ends beyond the notch to go with the other L /7. An idea although I can imagine it being time consuming & taking you away from your normal content, but, have you ever decided to handcraft a full wooden chess set? Maybe put it on your Etsy or wherever? Depending on price, I could see a lot of your subs scoffing something like this if they know you made it or had anything to do with it. Question, with your fishing trap, what style "test" line is the best? I guess it depends on whatever you're trying to catch but, is there one you use more "universally" out of everything else? Anywho, again Awesome content!

@@BUZZKILLJRJR If it's the woods around me, you may get some wolf spider trying to snag the knife to make it's hunting easier!! Same idea for certain places that have the carpenter sized biting ants! Those buggers possibly made off with a pair of my ex GF's Ray-Bans when we went kayaking & checked out an island whose top turned into a HUGE ant hill & could be using them for Solar tech of some kind??

Corp I don’t think a lot of people realize in a survival situation simple is the way to go. You don’t have time or energy to use complex things. You need quick,simple and to the point procedures that can save your life!! Love that your going back old school!!

I have a construction background too, which is probably why I like all these bushcraft building videos and why I built a fort in the woods. The only thing that I've used that I haven't seen you use is a Scotch eyed auger to make holes in wood so I can then carve a wooden nail to hold stuff together because I've been trying to use just the things that I find in the area to hold stuff together, so that means no rope and no knots. I do carry some rope with me just in case but I have been trying not to use it. I have also been building with clay because the stuff is quite abundant. I'm trying to make a homemade brick but, so far, that hasn't worked too well yet. I have managed to make some decent mortar out of it though and so the masonry that I've done on some jobs has really come into play there so it's not just all of my experience in carpentry that comes in handy. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Look at some of his earlier videos. He actually made one that came apart with things from like Lowes that he welded together and then used a store bought one later. I, too, would love to see more uses for it. 😉 😜

I am an old guy and when I was in US Army from 69 to 76, we used those old heavy OD green ponchos that worked great but were really heavy. I now carry two of those old ones instead of a tent and they are very effective. Still heavy and that translates to much more sturdy in my mind now. Also, I have been a paracord guy forever... and I am going to try out the bankline alternative for fall hunt. Your knot knowledge and the things you build with the bankline have convinced me to try this new way. Thanks.

When I was young and didn’t have to work I would do a lot of lake fishing. I had my own version of passive fishing. Bait your pole cast it out, stretch out on the bank, pin the pole under your arm, pull out a book and read through osmosis ( put the book over your eyes and snooze). Best way to spend a summer afternoon. 😂😂

Nice, I like that camp setup. I collect axes and have some fine current production and awesome old school axes. I will add one of those Hardcore Hammer Hatchets to my collection and it may become my go to axe when I go out. Keep up the good work.

When i was in the Army from 75 to 96 I always had that poncho and liner every time we went to the field. They would keep you really warm in the ice and snow, just sitting there in the dirt and tucked in around you on the ground.

I am a Marine and served 1988-1996, Active/Reserve as 0351 Anti Tank Assaultman (Infantry). The entire time I was in, I ALWAYS carried in my butt pack, a poncho, loaded spare magazine(for M16), stripped down MRE, mini maglight(with red lense attachment), compass, small pocket knife, pen(ink stick) and notebook. When I went to SOI (School Of Infantry Camp Geiger ), one of our Instructors was in Force Recon. He told us what he ALWAYS carried, regardless of mission. When ever he was leading course of instruction, we all paid attention. Great video. Great examples of K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid ). Keep videos coming!

A tool is only only a tool when it's working for you. When it comes to hatchets and axes, it's really just your preference. I try to pack it light and use tools that do as many jobs as they can based on my intentions. Corporal demonstrates that importance very well.

This is one of my favorite shelters so far…realistic and achievable beginners and even if you don’t have a partner you can pack 2 ponchos of your own and still be packed pretty light

Well constructed and a great choice of knots. You are one of the few that place importance on knots. Knots make the difference. The constrictor knot and the arbor knot are two of my favorites. Google the Transom knot. It adapts the constrictor knot to lash two sticks together at right angles.

I think that there will be so many, who are only half paying attention now, that will need a crash course in survival in the near future. Most will initially feel overwhelmed by the task. The simple gear and the simple skills that you demonstrate could do much to alleviate that. I look forward to more videos like this one, and I encourage anyone else who may be watching them to share them with as many people as you can.

Think about it, it wasn't long ago there was a HUGE influx of Asians buying up all sorts of companies & other places, correct? Bring this into what we get to hear these days with Chinese Soldiers being allowed to train in Canada so they can be more "cold weather" acclimated, plus anything else to do with that area including the con vid that's being used to push us further into that MOTB situation. Things like the so called "Chinese Spy Balloon" which was an actual satellite that malfunctioned but was said to be "Chinese" anyway, just to give more of an already existing division between an "us" & a "them" which may've started somewhere in the 70's but could go back further. Areas like that produced opium which came into this country as far back as the Colonies & that's when you had more British Merchant ships than we had on the seas & the oceans going to places like India, China & other areas that poppy which's used to produce opioids, was growing like no tomorrow. There's other factors involving England & Britain creating a lot of the corporations which are now in place & have been, so, whatever "War of Independence" becomes kind of Pay op ish if you think about this, just like others that because of whatever death toll, was used as basically satanic blood rituals

Sounds like some of those whinny critics think bushcrafting is actually reenacting. They should probably be watching some of my reenacting channels. They wouldn't be so confused that way. Good vid. I learn something from everything you do. At 73 I learned my favorite knot from you, the bowline. It seemed so complicated till I figured out how many other knots are a variation of it. Your slow methodical approach worked. Thanks.

Outstanding AF. Love the use of repeatable nots and simplicity of the nots. I really like the poncho builds you roll out, weather it’s tents, hammocks, or beads. Totally agree that it’s a must have for anyone. I never doubted your frog gig. Super skill to be able to make them. Loved the mid week video showing how you make them. Also enjoy watching you make the L7 notches and how to use them. There was so much in this video for everyone. Outstanding AF. Love the new ax too. Outstanding. If you get the chance try this. Soak them in buttermilk for 1/2 hr. Flour, egg then Panko breadcrumbs. Season as needed, fry them. Outstanding!!!

Primitive camping with self-caught chow. Now that’s the real deal. Great video! Side note about catching frogs. When I was a Boy Scout back in the late 70’s early 80’s, we found that the same spring pole that was catching our fish can also be used to “gig” frogs also. Seemed just as fun to “fish” frogs as fish.

I like the recent direction you’ve taken on your channel. I am not a long time sub nor a camper…yet? I enjoy the way you produce your videos l watch wood turners and hoof trimmers as well as bushcraft/camping 😂. I just don’t like silent or fast forward films. I am from Maine. My parents gave me a great book on the ways of the NE tribes for Christmas when I was 13. I bring this up because it describes and has drawings of how to make a gig out of wood and lashing. It also describes how to a make a strike trigger for one. anyway, just thought I would throw that in,

Outstanding AF brother, the goal should always be work smarter not harder. You have shown this week after week along with thinking out of the box. Just as you said at the end of the video, if you find a better way or can combine methods you should do so. This is a great lesson in adapting to overcome shortcomings. As someone old enough to be your father, I apprecaie your use of the Old School timeless principle of "starting Simple & Build on i!" Also, I am privileged to have several Old School tools which have been handed down from older generations; and they are good for future generations. If the tool is high-quality & works, why worry whether some TV personality's endorsement is on it? As you wisely said, "Why try to re-invent the wheel?" Most of my bushcraft tools are tools which I use year round at home or wherever. I loved the Old School Primitive structure for your shelter frame. It could be used with Old school; military; modern, or bushcraft tarps. You are one of the best & one of my favorites! Thanksfor your service, & Semper Fi!

I agree with you on the axe. If that’s what you choose then that IS your survival/bushcraft tool. There are no rules for this. It’s whatever you choose as your tools. Whatever works for each individual.
