The first solo camping trip in the new canoe didn't quite go as planned but it still felt great to be out on the water and enjoying a great camp. First time using the gopro as well so hopefully you enjoy that footage, adds a nice perspective I think

Apparently if I read the comments the only impact this video had was to bring more food. I don't know how you have the patience to keep responding to peeps saying the same thing over and over, "bring more food". As if you didn't address that in the video. I appreciate you talking about how the only way to learn is to get out and do it, something most the commenters apparently missed. Any trip you don't die on is a good trip. Don't listen to the (perhaps well-intentioned) haters. This trip was a total win because you learned something you didn't have knowledge of before. Thanks for the cool video.

Thanks Matt! Yeah I agree, as long as I made it home safe and sound in the end a little wiser that's all that matters right! Still a great trip, with some beautiful scenery. Funnily enough on my most recent trip that's uploading I brought way too much food lol. Still figuring out my limits in the canoe

The armchair camper is just as silly as the armchair version of any other sport. Mr. Miller you hit the nail on the head. until you do these things you cannot know what is "Enough" food/water, and even then there is a hundred ways to have that go wrong. Also until you have experienced being this far out and running into a problem you have no idea of what you are talking about. I see people messing up hydration on a 5 K and not remembering their name after a race. Once your body gets to a certain point it gets really hard to make good decisions and it is surprising how hard it is to think when your system is crashing.

Great video.... "It's a progression..... mine was more like diving off the deep end!!" - Great line right there!! I remember the first time I went kayak fishing. I was out there for about 5 hours. Got back to shore, sat down at camp and felt like total crap. My whole problem was "sea sickness" - didn't effect me while I was in the kayak, my body got accustomed to the movements on the water, but when I got back on land..... whoah!! I'm still a working man, sitting behind a desk 5 days a week, and I thank the Man Upstairs for my bunch of "KZfaqrs" that get me out in the woods all week long through their experiences. I get out on the weekends and have my fun!! Thanks for sharing the videos - your honesty is refreshing!!

Thanks Frank! Nice to know you like the honest approach and don't worry I'm right there with you, just trying to get out as much as I can and she my experiences with you! Maybe it was a little bit of sea sickness, maybe a little bit too much sun as well. I bought a couple more snacks for next time so we'll see what happens! Take care buddy

I love that your just so honest about your mistakes or how you’re feeling. Some other channels make camping seem amazing and comfortable all the time when it really isn’t! Some times there are some bad days, sometimes you don’t bring quiet enough food and sometimes it’s way colder than you planned. Thank you for showing your progress and remember to look after yourself! 💛

I appreciate your honesty and your determination. You seem like the kind of person that would make a good friend and camping companion. For a "novice" you show a great amount of outdoor skills. We, as you stated, have all made mistakes in our early attempts at wilderness camping. Two of the very first things that I learned were to bring a sufficient amount of food, both proteins and carbs, and to have a warm sleeping bag or heavy blanket. Unless you are trying to show that you can SURVIVE, you want to THRIVE, so you can enjoy the time in the wild! Third thing is for you to be extremely careful about getting into a "low blood sugar" situation. I am a diabetic, and I have at time gotten into that situation. It is NOT pleasant, and it IS dangerous! Keep some foods with you that will spike up your blood sugars quickly, just to be on the safe side of things. In my early years, I tent camped all over the United States and Canada. Yes, you must be aware of the bulk and the weight of everything, but you are out there to have fun and be comfortable while doing that. I have also done a lot of canoe camping, both solo and with a companion. That is probably one of the most satisfying ways to go camping and fishing, because of the stealthiness of the canoe gliding along in the water. You get to see so much wildlife along the way!

Thanks William! Yeah we all make mistakes at times just hopefully we learn from them and they aren't too serious! I've gone out and bought a bunch of extra snacks and provisions, stuff I can keep in pockets etc and so far it's really done the trick, I just got back from a trip and I felt much better, I wasn't even that hungry in the evening

I consider you to be an incredible person just for the fact of encouraging you to do what you like even without experience, personally I think you represent all of us who want to do it and for different circumstances we can't! They were all rookies once, Joe Robinet, Zack Fowler, The Wooded Beardsman, Chad Zuber, Sweedwoods and so many others also went through this, and your showing it is important for people to see that not everything is rosy!

A long time ago in a Galaxy far away a couple of friends and I rode our bicycles to the river to camp out. A real severe thunderstorm blew in and my friends hopped on their bikes and headed home to Momma and left me there alone. I was eight years old! I had an old 9 ft cotton picking sack for a hammock with a canvas tarp for cover. I made it through the night with heavy rain, wind and thunder and lightning. When I got up around daylight I was absolutely starving. Luckily we had set a trot line the day before and there were 3 catfish on the line. I cleaned and cooked all three and while eating the second one my friends showed back up and were drooling over the third one. I let them have it of course. Renewed with the energy from my breakfast, we played all day and spent another more peaceful night at camp. Amazing how much better things look on a sunny morning. Keep it up Bro! You're doing great. BTW I agree with leo ll

Rob your approach is refreshing. I really enjoy your channel because of your honesty. You share your hardships and failures. Other You Tubers edit those out, making them seem like perfect bushcrafters. Lesson learned from this adventure. Always pack some extra food and trail ready snacks. It is easy to get run down and exhausted from the exertion of paddling and dehydration. Always bring extra layers and go with a sleeping bag with a temperature rating lower than the forecast. Temperature can change fast out there and rain and wind can make it drastically colder. Beauty of that sunset on the calm water was worth the hardship. Thanks for sharing the moment. You are an inspiration, keep up the great work!

My go to trail dinner is a tin of sardines in tomato sauce. Mix it in with some boiled spaghetti and add garlic and red pepper flake. High Protein, and carbs in a small package.

Great vid bro, true knowledge comes with experience! Haha its a good job i wasn’t there, remember when i scranned a whole bag of trail mix in like the first hour of our trip! 😂 take it easy and always pack enough food at least until you can get to the docs, last thing you want is something to go wrong that far from help dude! Speak to jim and noi on the fishing bro they could give you some good tips! So glad you put yourself out there and started this channel, its like being right there with you bro, i know i probably speak for a lot of us back in England that miss you so this is an awesome way to see what you get up to out there! Congrats on all the success your channels had and long may it continue, haha one of my favs you’ve was the wallmart challenges 😂👌🏻 its been great to watch how your channels progressed and i always look forward to the next vid straight after i’ve watched one! Stumbled upon your videos a bit ago, I really enjoy and appreciate them. I'm an old and aging ex-Boy Scout (made Eagle scout way back in '80) who's not been out in the woods in way too long. You are inspiring me to head back out, thanks, man. If I could offer a couple suggestions, first, from what you are describing, it sounds like you might be dealing with hypoglycemia. My younger brother had it and experienced very similar symptoms. You should get that checked out. And make sure you take extra rations with you just in case. Also, as per your freezing at night, not sure of your sleeping attire, but I learned very early on in my Boy Scout years (the first two camping trips to be exact) that if you try to sleep in the clothes you wore that day, you will probably end up cold. The best way to stay warm at night, even with a lighter bag is to strip down to your birthday suit or at least change into fresh, dry undies and t-shirt. That way you're not wearing clothes that may be damp -- even if so minorly so that you don't notice -- and end up freezing because the dampness of your clothes cools you down more than you want to. I learned this the hard way on my first camping trip in the fall of '74 -- yes, I'm old. I slept with my clothes on and had a very cold night. My second trip, winter camping, I slept nekkid and stayed toasty warm all night. Thanks again for your videos. Stay safe and healthy and keep doing what you're doing.

Thanks Charles! I actually have a doctors appointment next week to get a full work up and check to see what's going on. I always bring a spare set of thermal underwear to sleep in at night, usually long pants and a long sleeve under shirt because I don't like sleeping in the smelly sweaty clothes from the day before either. I think the problem was it just got much colder than I had anticipated down by the water

Dehydration and too few calories came close to ruining a couple trips. Now I drink water every hour and snack every 2-3 hrs when I hike or paddle. It is just a habit that keeps me energized. And I am still starving after a day in the woods. Also, on multi-day trips, I always carry a couple backup pouches of freeze-dried just in case anything unexpected happens. Weather, busted ankle, losing the trail, whatever. Enjoyed the film.

Ya know what guys....I’m really respecting this guys honesty.I don’t know what his future plans are with this new venture he acquired. Whether he’s looking for sponsees to up grade his stuff..gas money from KZfaq...bushcraft..or time away camping. I really respect this outing he did and his honesty.Other than trying to drink on an empty stomach and the sleeping bag issue . He coulda had a better time.I respected the fact he didn’t bring a 10.000 luminous torch flashlight as in a lot of places in my opinion takes away from the experience. And if he’s trying to impress the vegans or minimalist mountaineers.Bud...don’t waste you life doing that.Unless eventually you like that or maybe the world brings bad luck and you have to live like that. Example...you coulda walked around the lake exploring or even walk around the lake walking in the water. If you like to take on some drinks maybe figure out a way to haul more gear to enjoy and make fun with it...for yourself. At least ya did it and told your truth. Being politically correct for KZfaq or sponsor is not the truth .The reality is a lot harsher when being forced to deprive.I suppose what I’m saying if I was posting videos using 4000 dollars worth of equipment and block out stuff because you tube or someone else’s kid didn’t like it...ffff Wait till everyone sees my fake colostomy bag...lol My time of you tube has come and gone....coulda made amazing videos over the years...who all used 10000 cannons to go camping.Theres tricks I do to this day no one has still figured out because I’m just not seeing the on KZfaq. This guy had almost everything he needed without breaking the bank...for this particular weather and lake.I liked your trip only I think I woulda had a Byers time...even without catching fish.thumbs up

Loved the canoeing and camping video! Awesome as always! You should name your canoe the SS DEMO lol (noticed the tag still attached lol) I have some of the same experiences, especially when "exerting energy" doing adventures. My blood sugar levels drop suddenly. I carry Cliff and GoMacro bars with me in my tackle box/hiking pack/pocket (depending on what I'm doint) so if the "weak/dizzy/nausea/almost panicky" feeling hits while out doing stuff. I find a place to sit for a few, eat a bar, wait about 10-15 minutes and I'm good to go usually. On the rare occasion I've forgotten to eat that day (being excited to get out there lol) I will need 2 bars to "boost" my insulin level quickly. Dehydration can also cause nausea, weakness, and queezy feelings. I usually chug some h2o when eating my bar(s) just in case it's either lol
