Out for an overnight wild camping at the Ochill Hills to try my new Rab Ascent 1100 sleeping bag that I have purchased to try over the coming winter months.
It is the warmest in Rab’s Ascent range of sleeping bags, the Ascent 1100 is a down-filled sleeping bag that provides reliable protection in cold winter conditions. Designed specifically for regular outdoor use, and is also ideal for those buying their first down sleeping bag for serious winter use.
Also, on this trip I highlight some history within the Ochil hills along with footage from the Glendevon Upper Reservoir which was empty during the summer exposing some of the old farm builds and Bronze Age sites.

Jeez! Nothing like blotting the wild landscape with a hundred litres of bright luminous red & orange paint... 😂 At least you chose the green Rab 1100...quality. 😉

@@RS.Outdoors personally I hate bright colour clothing or tents, and always choose low key greens and browns. Red does stand out in a scenic, although it's over-used in recent decades, and I think it ruins a beautiful scenic.

I don't know how you slept with all that clothing in the 1100. I'd sweat like a roasted pig 🐖 on a spit inside the Rab in those relatively mild conditions. I tend to always sleep naked in either the 900 or 1100 fill bags all through winter, and will only very occasionally wear a base layer shirt during severest low temperatures 🌡️ You're right about the loft of the Ascent 1100 and I also prefer the extra room it provides inside compared to confined space of the Rab Andes range.

We've simular examples in Essex (Hanningfields reservoir) and on a recent trip to Wales, it appears likewise. Doesn't seem very promising ay? Been watching MSR reviews, a mate just got one and I'm looking at doing likewise so thanks for hints and tips there, much appreciated. It all depends how strong the winds you plan on going out in are. I always try and go out in good weather. However a few times I have been caught out and the Access 1 and 2 has performed well. Had some really wild weather in my latest Cape Wrath film and also an older one at this link with the Access 1. Many seem to go out now on purpose to see how wild the weather is they can camp in. Hi Oliver and what a great adventure for a great cause. If I was taking one tent it would be the DCF Duomid I had. Note that it needs to be paired up with an inner tent and modified to fit that I got from AliExpress. Have videos on both on my channel. Very storm worth and great space for sheltering out of the weather. Also very lightweight and not too expensive considering. All depends on budget and would also recommend the MSR Access1 and Access2 which i have sued on multiple trips. Used the Duomid on my 1st Cape Wrath trip so you cna see it in action and also the MSR in my latest Cape Wrath film. Atb

@@RS.Outdoors cheers or getting back to me bud. I am curious about these dcf tents. Weight is definitely a key factor. I will be sure to check out the videos for the dcf tent. I have been tempted with the idea of a laser compact 1. The cape wrath trail video is excellent. I am buzzing to tackle that when I get up your way, probably about March time. Thanks again I really appreciate your advice.

Nice one Ray. After last winter at home I bet you are bursting for a snowy winter wild camp! I was watching your camp up in the mamores a few years ago and think I will try a wee winter camp up at the Lochan. I have invested in a enlightened equipment quilt for winter....fingers crossed. Did you think any more on your paramo alta 3? Cheers paul

Nice one Ray, good to see you out and about! I’ve been feeling very much the same lately, but I got a Suunto watch and that’s sort of kicked me up the arse in terms of getting off the junk food and exercising! Amazing and slightly depressing to see those remnants beneath the Loch, a stark reminder of the way things used to be. I see you’ve got a RR shell on, any particular reason why you’ve changed from your shakedry?

Thinking about upgrading my OEX bag for this one. I have two questions that I want to ask. First what is the comfort ratings, limit and extreme? Second question what would be your suggestions when it comes to eventually washing the sleeping bag as I know it has a particular nikwax coating on it?

Nice one, was thinking about the 1100, got the 900, does the 11 eat up a fair bit more rucksack space? Was looking at some of the sea to summit lightweight bags too but dinnae really believe a bag that weighs under a kilo will be much use for oor winters.

Its not that bad space wise when in a dry sack, it would go even smaller with a compression sack.

Higher end down bags tend to be reasonably water resistant, since this is an expensive bag I'd assume it's pretty decent at that, although I personally never use a down bag, I just don't like or trust them, synthetics are better suited to wet and damp conditions, the only down side is they don't pack away so small but they last much longer in my experience.

Hi Ray. Can I ask how tall you are? Only I'm looking to buy this bag but some places say 185cm and others over 200cm. I'm 191 cm (6'1) and would really like to be able to fit into the bag comfortably. I plan to be taking into the Pyrenees with temps as low as -15 so before I spend my hard earned money, would like to know I'll fit in it. Thanks Ray!
