Today we are going to discuss a technique called "cancelling". Cancelling essentially means that you're neutralizing the cut kick with your feet instead of your hands. There are numerous advantages of cancelling the cut. In fact, most fighters are cancelling the cut 90% of the time during the match. This is why people are saying Taekwondo looks like foot fencing, flamingo fighting & etc. Cancelling the cut is far less risky than punching or kicking under the cut because the opponent is in P3 instead of P1.
Many US fighters (including myself) had a difficult time learning this technique, because we are used to kicking everything fast and hard. At the Sport Accord Combat games in 2013, we got demolished by the Iranian team because we were too "old school". The second time we fought them in the finals, we worked on cancelling the cut and lost by only 2 points. To be successful with cancelling the cut, you have to learn to push with the foot, instead of kicking.
In Part 2, I will show the homework, and some cancelling techniques in closed & open stance.
