I thought you might assess the problem I have with occasional flameouts. I discovered it was because of tiny air bubbles produced by the diesel pump that accumulated in a an upper bent in the fuel line to the heater. Eventually it entered the combustion chamber and extinguished the flame. Causing a lot of white smoke and diesel leaking before giving an error code and shutting off. Does anyone else have this problem? And is there a solution other than replacing the pump?

Hi ya.. I watched your video and tried all you said. Unfortunately it still wouldn't light. So I took the clean a step further, and it's now working like it was when it was brand new. Just to make sure that it wasn't a fluke, I repeated the same process on the other 2 dead heaters that I had kept when they failed. All 3 now work perfectly! Video is on my page, hope it helps! Thanks for posting this to help others who may be struggling.

Hey Adam, just wanted to comment here. Thank you for the quick lesson and explanation. Just got really cold here in Nevada and went to turn on Seamus(DH Name). White smoke, no joy of lighting and E-10. I've used it in my garage bar for a single season last year, but......took it apart, took my time and found it was coked up an incredible amount of sooty goodness. Cleaned, had a beer and reinstalled. He is a happy unit now. Thank You

Great advice, another cause of white smoke that happened with my heater turned out to be water in combustion air intake pipe after heavy rain even thoughit it had the filter cap, I had it pointing up and have since left it horizontal .

The key to keeping these things running clean is bringing them up to temperature,I ramp mine up slowly till it gets the unit to 200 c,then I turn it down and even with it turned all the way down it maintains 200c and runs like a champ, and the pump pumps very slowly

Excellent. I've just been quoted a price for a diagnostic that is the same as a new plug and tools. It's the "smoke on start up and fail first start but runs fine" problem. Three years in, second fan. I noticed someone mentioned screen over combustion intake, I'll second that. Mudwasps filled up a fan. I'll come back with results, cheers.

make a hook out of the stainless steel wire of a Chinese food container and stick it in the screen opening at the far end and pull it out. Good to have a few spare screens as they damage easily. I also had a lot of carbon buildup in that hole past the screen and used the same wire to open it up by poking a hole through the carbon.

Thanks! This also worked for mine (I was doing all the same things wrong too). But you forgot to mention that EVERYTHING will be black with soot after you complete this cleaning job. Your clothes, your gloves / hands, your tools, your work space. Do this in clothes you no longer want. Over a tarp. With a white garbage bag (so you can see the soot). And have lot of shop rags handy. Don't touch your mom's couch after.

The tiny air intake hole for the glow-plug is the path for fuel leakage when the heater is operated on its side (the wrong side, with glowplug facing downwards - whereby the blown cabin air will eventually contain diesel fumes) - it's not 'leaky' or faulty, it's why correct positioning is key.
