Another solution could be more communal living. Not like living in a commune but more like being close with the people in your area, so if bethany has made 9 liters of chicken broth she can give you the left overs, so next time you make a whole tub of pasta you can also bring her some and that way lower food waste. In my village thats how we usually do it, for example we had several fruit trees so my grandma and i spent the summer gifting jars or marmalade to anyone who was willing to take one (there was SO MUCH marmalade, boxes and boxes of jars, it was madness) In return we would get the occasional bag of tomatoes or cucumbers or peppers or carrots or whatever they were growing this year. I feel like a lot of people underestimate the benefits of having a close community that helps each other out, specially in the US, where the closest thing to that seems to be karen from the HOA calling to remind you to mow your lawn or she'll evict you.

Yeah, where I live no one knows their neighbors and hates the neighbors they do know. It's ridiculous. When I was newly divorced I lived in an apartment complex and many of us were friends. I would give my neighbor ½ my celery if I bought it and she would do the same. Same for 5 lbs of potatoes or 3 lbs of onions. We had a block party every summer and football parties every Sunday during season. It was great. When I moved to a house, my neighbors were jerks. I miss the community of the old days.
@chelseaoconnor32612 ай бұрын
Yes! I feel like people like to blame how we’ve “lost our sense of community” on technology and screens, when in reality it happened long ago when corporations realized they could make more money by pushing the nuclear family ideal so each family buys their own home, their own car, their own groceries, etc. and we push the narrative that kids who don’t move out after a certain age are “lazy moochers” when in reality it’s far cheaper and more environmentally friendly and way less exhausting to share within your community. Mary makes jam that she shares with her neighbors, and Kevin can mend any holes or tears in your clothes, Ben and Jerry pass their kid’s clothes onto Jen and Linda’s kids who are a year or two behind theirs. The more we share within our communities the less wasteful we are and the more cost effective it is.

So, selling by weight would definitely help, as it allows people to buy how much they NEED, however it bears pointing out most of the waste actually comes from the stores themselves. Speaking as someone who works at one, we throw away HUGE amounts of food, usually from the bakery, because throwing it away is obviously better than donating it or selling it at a discount. Some of it is also on lazy customers (lots of cold/frozen food gets destroyed because people leave it OUTSIDE OF REFRIGERATION, or in the wrong degree), but this vastly pales in comparison to just how much perfectly good food is thrown away because too much was made, it didn't sell, and they'd rather eat the cost than give it to people who need it.

Keep on demanding half a loaf until supply reacts. In the meantime: Slice up the exess of the oversized loaf immediately and freeze the slices. Thaw on demand in the toaster. Virtually no difference to the fresh loaf, even weeks past the purchase. Bonus option: If a baker won't let you buy the half loaf for bogus reasons like "maybe no-one takes the other half", offer a bet saying it is just as likely that no-one might pick up the whole darn thing at all today just like you won't. And in case you are right, they may pack it tonight and put aside to your name at 50% off because you will return tomorrow and inquire how it went. Baker now Had options. Odds are: 1) sell as demanded: 50% loaf now leaving 50% in stock, = 50% conversion +chance to complete the sale with another customer. 2) no sale to you, undeternined risk of wasted conversion. Option to cut their possible loss by your generous covering for 50% of today's loaf value in future options on the full loaf they currently want to stupidly hang on to. ...food for thought! And worth a try. As long as we're not actually starving, competitors are around and food prices are mainly artificially overrated, that means there's a buyer"s market underneath, after all.

Freeze what you don't use! When preparing something I started cutting up the whole thing and freezing the rest - absolutely a life and money saver.

This is why I love living an area with so many farmers markets or buying at small asian stores. I grew up watching my parents buy basically exactly what they wanted based on wieght and I live by that where I can

There are some grocery stores here that do sell celery like that and I'm so thankful for it because while I typically don't mind freezing things that I'll use later on, celery is something I rarely use and I don't like eating it raw, so buying only the amount I need is so much better.

1 this has strong Tom Cardy vibes. 2 at my local American Walmart, they have pre cut celery sticks in little snack packs. Very convenient.

See the issue with Australian supermarkets in particular is that one celery stick (for example) would cost about 80% of the price of a full celery bunch. They don't even sell halves any more.

The grocery store I work at actually lets you buy one celery stick lmao.

I've seen 2 sticks prepackaged in even small grocery stores. But even so you can make stock, freeze extra, plant it. Yes, you read that right. It grows roots readily and if you cut off the whole top you can grow more celery even. You can only really do it once. It's only indefinite if you let it flower and harvest the seeds, but if you plant it at least it will be alive and stay fresh much longer

I felt this. My aunt was always getting celery but since we only ever used it for soup it would sit in the veggie drawer and go bad

I’ve been saying a similar thing… more people are single but supermarkets do very little in the ‘single portion’ department

Honestly, a "for singles" supermarket is a million dollar idea. Where you can buy much smaller portions for a discount price. It would be great for perishables

Literally just did a recipe that called for 3 sticks of celery diced up. I had to buy a whole celery bunch and I doubt I’ll be eating the rest, So I feel this in my core 😂

The last thing you see when celery prices stay the same per item but item size gets cut down to 10%
@Zeoytaccount4 ай бұрын
I sorta feel like this would increase prices further as smaller portions would justify higher “processing” fees
