The "high powered" weapons on board this vessel I called small arms in naval parlance. The interesting and important thing in this video. Is the mere presence of these weapons without their discharge, was enough to make evil go away. This is a perfect example of the judicious use of deadly force. The least amount of force was applied in this instance and everyone is safe. That is the preferred outcome in every situation. This is what we want from police. Although they are seldom trained to do this.

Trouble is with this approach the pirates will keep going until they find a soft target. So a short term setback for the pirates. Better to get the message out you want be going home if you engage in piracy. Permanent solution.

This is not a hired security company, this has been a collaboration with the Dutch government to protect ships in this area against piracy. The people on this ship are Dutch marines who provide protection. That they walk in civilian / sports clothing is because some are not on duty at that time, only when situations occur as in the video.

Wow, I started watching this video and I was like, "Where are these armed guards the title was talking about, this must be clickbait", but then all of a sudden I noticed it, a small peculiar movement in the brush, on the deck of the ship! I was like, "wait a minute! That isn't foliage on the deck of this ship, those are the GUARDS!!!!!". Such a brilliant and skillful use of camouflages! So effective!

They just need to get get rid of the pirates regardless if they attack this ship or not. Otherwise they will eventually attack a ship or vessel that does not have protection.

Thank you for sharing this video, this is to inform everyone who watched that Somalian Pirates are real and shipping company must invest in training or guarding their ships and their crew. Being equipped with this makes the family of the seafarer at peace knowing that their sailor is safe.

You can argue argue all day about all the aspects, intricacies, and nuances of meeting piracy with force. All I know is that this would have been a perfect opportunity to rotate the phone and shoot horizontal video.

I've always thought the way to make the pirates leave everyone alone would be to have a covert, extremely heavily armed shipping vessel, with a manifest of extremely valuable cargo sail around the area a lot. Periodically repaint/flag/name/modify the exterior of the vessel as camouflage., ..... Exterminate any attackers, after a while, and with enough pirates not returning home, the cost/benefit analysis on being a pirate becomes too costly.

In my opinion, all ships traveling in that area should have armed guards. These military escort vessels can’t protect all the ships that are transporting cargo. Plus, despite war ships and military escorts in that area the pirate attacks have actually been increasing. Of all the pirates that are arrested and taken to Kenya for trials only a handful are punished. I truly believe the tens of millions of dollars (actually hundreds of millions by now) the pirates have been paid in ransoms help to support the continuation of their criminal activity in the form of bribes to government officials. Or maybe even organized crime with leaders at the top that risk nothing but take most of the profits…..like pirate captains of old or the mafia organizations of today. The cities near the coast would have had enough money to support every citizen for the rest of their lives by now. So something is fishy. Pirating is now a generational activity with no end in sight. It’s what they live, learn and aspire to be.
