The funniest movie of all time is Some Like it Hot, lets drink Manhattans out of a rubber bag to celebrate it!
**********************************
Billy Wilder's 1951 film Some Like it Hot is so incredible it's hard to fathom. It regularly sits at the top of AFI's 100 best comedy's of all time, and is usually in the top 10 of AFI's best films of all time. It's a tale of a couple of down on their luck Jazz musicians, played by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon, who accidentally witness a brutal gang land slaying and wind up hiding out in Florida, with an all girls jazz band, in drag. Marylin Monroe plays Sugar Kane, the bands vocalist and ukulele player, and resident Good Times Gal. We meet her as she pulls a flask from her garter. Two actors who came to the fore in the Pre-Code 1930's put in outstanding turns in this film, Joe E. Brown as a horn-dog playboy and George Raft as Spats Columbo, the films arch-gangster. Hilarity and hijinks ensue as the boys, er, girls, make their way through love and suspense in sunny Florida.
On their way south by sleeper car, the band enjoys some prohibition manhattans, mixed up in a hot water bottle. Here I do my best to recreate that drink, and the results are surprisingly wonderful.
Sleeper Car Manhattan
1.5 oz. or 45 ml. Mellow Corn
1.5 oz. or 45 ml. Punt e Mes
2 dashes Orange Bitters
1 Dash angostura Bitters
Mix in a rubber bag
Garnish with maraschino cherries
Orange twist optional

I thought the Orange bitters was to acknowledge they're going to Florida. My favorite story about Lemmon and Curtis and the costumes is that they originally were being dressed out of the costume stores. They objected at how frumpy they looked and begged to be dressed by Orry-Kelly, too.

The best Manhattan I've had to date - from a great bar here in the original Manchester - is: Rittenhouse Rye, Antica, Angostura & Orange Bitters, and a bar spoon of Maraschino Liqueur. By the way Greg, you're my joint favourite KZfaqr alongside Movies with Mikey, ContraPoints, and Babish. Old movies and cocktails are quite literally my jam. As in, when I retire and start making jam (just as every English person is bound by law to do) I will be calling mine Old Movies & Cocktails.

The little anecdotes of history are my absolute favorite part about the show. Don't get me wrong, I love the cocktails themselves as well, but Greg is such a charismatic host, I would even tune in to a show hosted by him that's entirely just about the history of old films. I was absolutely dying at the "But does he have tits like these?" part. Entertaining as always Greg, keep up the good work!

I was reading about The Prince and the Showgirl, and the same stuff was said about Marylin. Olivier had issue with her using an acting coach which I think is ridiculous. I kind of feel like if at some point someone asked her what was wrong and actually cared we might not have these crappy recounts of her on set or maybe see her alive today.

Absolutely the funniest movie ever, I go back and forth over who's performance is more hilarious, and it's a moot point. Gawd Tony Curtis is ridiculous though. How funny he is always slays and surprises me. As I watch you pour all ingredients into the rubber hot water bottle, I worry this may end up a stunt cocktail, but I can't help but approve. When I had my first Manhattan, (recently) my reaction was "Why haven't I been drinking THESE all along?" and it absolutely replaced an Old Fashioned as my go to (along with a Rob Roy.) I love the tasting notes on this, and all the anecdotes as well. "I am incapable of human emotion" 😂😂 it works! The sexiest thing a boy ever said to me was "I'm dead inside".
