Low thermal/sink during the downwind leg. Decided to maintain in the non-turbulent lift to wait until it was out of the field. Same technique used when waiting for a dust devil to move away from your field.

Amazing flying! That's such a challenging LZ under normal conditions, way to handle the conditions, and such a textbook landing. Wow!
I can't believe that that LZ is an option in good conditions!!! Well done for pulling that off so nicely!

don't be in such a hurry to land, take your time, be patient. I've found that when I am trying to force the landing I actually increase my chances of having a bad one.

He was scared. The fear stood painted on his face. By the way, why not check the wind before going up.

Holy hell! Being a hang glider pilot myself, that was sketchy AF! Excellent composure and airmanship Sir. Well done.

Very nice composure. You rode through it like it's part of a normal approach, set up nicely and nailed the landing.

Lookout Mountain in Golden, Colorado. Bringing back sweet memories from the late eighties when I used to fly there quite a bit with my friends at RMHGA. An intimidating LZ for sure. I must say that I always was glad to go XC instead. Regards from the Netherlands.

LZ got even smaller and I am with you, always glad to go XC. Thanks for the comment.

Very nice.... I know the feeling. The HG holding pattern and approach to the LZ at Andy Jackson can be pretty lifty and turbulent sometimes. I had an invisible dust devil lift my left wing so hard it turned me 180 on final. Luckily my feet weren't out of the bag yet and I still had enough altitude & positive control to turn hard around into the wind. I had lost enough altitude that I couldn't make it over the little hill so I had to land out in the brush just below the LZ. Bent a DT, but otherwise it was a fair landing given the surprise.

The best thermals are always over the LZ while you are flying on final. Good job, congratulation! I am not brave enough to fly in shorts.

I have experienced flying into a thermal while on final, it is scary. Also twice in 23 years of hang gliding I dropped like a brick at about 150 feet above the deck when setting up to land . If I had not of rounded out in time I would have gone straight into the deck . I hope other pilots don't experience that, it gets the heart pumping. It happened both times without warning in seemingly good conditions.

It can only be invisible if there's no dust, in which case it's not a dust devil, it's just turbulence. And you weren't exactly on final approach either, just losing height well before your final approach. Other than that, it's an accurate title for the video.

and this why I never continued hang gliding. As a novice, I hit a thermal when trying to land, went shooting upwards and them suddenly thrown down to the ground from height. I decided then and there this was not for me. My brother continued and is now an instructor on gliders/sailplanes. Those I can quite happily fly. Much more stable and predictable.

This was taken after construction made the landing field more level and slightly larger. It used to be real bumpy coming into land there because of how the terrain funnels the thermals. There were also trees on the east side of the landing zone as well so you had to be spot on. I ended up in them more than once catching a random thermal while trying to land the paraglider. Nothing like the lee side of a hill for a takeoff and landing point! North launch was always my favorite.

Turbulence = Lift. I've saved many a flight down there, even much lower, but you seem in such a hurry to sled down to the LZ. Reminds me of the early 70's fliers talking about hitting 'turbulence', until they all wised up and started flying far, but that is a pure blue (high pressure) sky, so LZ was probably eventually inevitable. ;-)

I wonder, why try to land immediately? Isn't the joy of gliding to have a prolonged flight (hence starting from significant elevation)?

Ever flown here? It can be bumpy as heck coming into the LZ. I had a few times in the paraglider where I was out of the harness 20ft above the ground on final and a ripping 1000ft/min thermal picks you up and sends you back towards the top of the hill.
