I generally like new ideas so I’m not gonna knock his invention but I do have to say I think the Spot Grips are better for heavy dumbbell presses, they don’t require re-racking, are a lot more space saving and require less set up

I love the shelf for the dumbbells. Getting a heavy dumbbell up and laying back is kind of a pain. If you could rack a dumbbell with that shelf, that would be awesome. The whole thing is cool though for safety and benching or pressing heaving dumbbells.

I agree, it's a great concept and with some tweaking, I think he's got a potential winner on his hands!

Thanks for the feedback. The launch platform is for both lift-off and re-rack of the dumbbells. The video highlights the capturing of the dumbbells so they won't be damaged by dropping.

I think for me it's too much stuff to set up. If there was something that I could just put that wire loop thingy on my normal spotters I'd consider that.

Yeah, there's definitely room for tweaking. As Michael said, he's spent a lot of time with this and he is an engineer so there's probably a ton of temptation to overbuild. But once he told me that his goal was to get the attention of a bigger manufacturer in hopes of bringing his concept to market, I was set at ease because a lot of user friendliness would hopefully be built in to the version of the product that makes it into the hands of customers. Especially after product testing and getting feedback from testers.

Love this idea and thank you for interviewing him! Far better than just trays and far better than a Henny strap setup. This combo, once made simpler, and adaptable to PowerBlocks will be a purchase I will make for my Rep PR-5000.

Great concept but unfortunately Spot Grips has already done this and they e objectively made this design much much better!

I’m also not sure how they haven’t done a single drop test, given that that’s the whole point of the product. Not trying to be harsh. Just realistic. A static hold test is completely different than a drop test. If their goal really is safety, they need to drop test this!

@RoryEllisMusic hey Rory, it’s probably because this isn’t something he’s intending to sell. This is a prototype that he took to HomeGymCon hoping to find a manufacturer who would further develop the concept into a product. You’re looking at it as if it’s a finished product, but this is actually just a concept piece that he’s hoping to partner with a brand on developing. Think about what the early versions of any product were and they probably look very different from what actually hit market.

The difference is this is a concept that hasn’t gone through the full product development process like Spot Grips have. From what I can tell this product does two things whereas Spot Grips specializes in one thing. I also don’t believe that just because one product exists that fulfills a function that you should stop trying to develop others. For example, I am a much bigger fan personally of dumbbell spotter hooks for this (the Body-Solid version is my favorite of the ones that are currently being produced.) but that doesn’t mean that Spot Grips shouldn’t have produced their product just because dumbbell spotter hooks have been on the market for 20 years. I see this as similar, and if Michael is able to find a manufacturer to develop his product, keep it unique from what’s already out there, but at the same time, make it attractive to customers then I think we all win in the end.

@@RoryEllisMusic Thanks for the feedback. To be clear, it is not a product available to the public yet. It will go through product development that will include drop testing once we find a manufacturer.
