For anybody wondering how he was able to get away without a fuse, remember that the light he used has enough resistance to limit current to about 4A, even if there is no additional resistance in the circuit. The light IS a high resistance fuse. So the wires are safe for testing even with a dead short. It's still a bit of an unknown at the area of the short, I suppose it could start a fire there if you left it on. When testing you rarely leave it on for more than a few seconds, so more damage at the point of the short is unlikely. Ultimately the area of the short will always be fixed or bypassed.

Light bulb to find a short is pretty much the only way to do it. It’s how it’s taught during the 4 year apprenticeship program in Canada
@greg7886
@greg7886 Жыл бұрын
Somehow, I'm confused about this. I'm assuming the 7 amp fuse for which the 4 amp test light is substituted is on the load side of the circuit. When the test light is first plugged in, it is stated / shown that the short is not present and the test light is not lit but the dome lights are. If the test light is in series with the dome light circuit, why does it not light? The relay is on right? Why is this any different than just considering the test light bulb as another resistance in the circuit which will consume its share of the voltage drop in the circuit. I may understand if I'd seen a diagram. I understand what is stated above but in my mind I would expect the bulb to just get brighter when the short happens. Anyway not sure if anyone can help me understand, Thx
@DDescalchuk57
@DDescalchuk57 Жыл бұрын
@@greg7886 the test light needs a path to ground. The fuse circuit is hot on both sides of the fuse if the fuse is good. A short is always to ground, so when there’s a short the test light has a path to ground so the bulb lights. When it’s not lit it just acts as a resistor limiting current flow slightly. It’s a super safe way to locate shorts. And you don’t blow a piss load of fuses while doing so. In most cases you can just start unplugging connections on the suspect circuit until the light goes out and that shows you which part of the circuit is the issue. In some cases you gotta open the harness up and cut the wire to divide up the system to find the problem area. There’s another super old school way to finding a short. Insert paper clip watch for smoke to start in the harness wait for smoke to stop and run an overlay. Hahaha I wouldn’t do it this way but it’s another way lol

Unhooked all the lights and plugged them back in until I found the one that pops the fuse, not the ideal way but probably the quickest when there's over 9 lights that could be the issue

About 40 years ago, I had a customer's Chrysler product in for inop dome light. It would pop a new fuse instantly. Long story short, I decided to find the short by jumping the fuse and looking for smoke. OH BOY, I found smoke!!! It was billowing out from the headliner area. Lowered the headliner and found two wires that had nearly burnt thru the headliner material. If I had left the jumper wire in for one more second, it would have burnt thru the headliner. I got lucky, but I never did _that_ again!

A (perhaps) small thing that I noticed on the wifes CRV was that the wires going into the door was a straight shot, and after a shit ton of miles, those wires started to break and had to be repaired due to the constant bending at 90°. Conversly our Subaru has offset the exit and entry path of those wires, and they just flex slightly when you open and close the doors. There will never be that same problem on the Subaru, and it cost what, 7 or 8 cents more in wire length? And now over time I have noticed how some automakers nickle and dime you to death in so many ways. For example, do you have to drop your fuel tank to replace a fuel pump? You dont think about it until you nred a new pump. Some cars have an access port under the seat, easy peasy, some don't. I was surprised to find that excellent cars like Honda and Toyota cut corners like that, while Subaru and others did not. Ot affects the ownership experience if you keep your cars long term.

I thought about putting another set of lugs further down in the Barrel but didn't want to Drill through the Porcelain! Good job on spotting the problem so quickly, yes, sometimes better to be lucky or have an experience in the past that was similar. I had a similar instance with a vehicle that was blowing a 10 amp fuse for the interior lights. Of course, it was a loaded up vehicle option wise. It had vanity light, dome lamp, map lamps and a courtesy light in each door. I figured the wiring went up the right side windshield pillar so I pulled the inside trim piece off and boom there it was in front of me. One of the metal clips retaining the molding had chafed the wire when it was installed apparently. Fixed the wire and all done. Very first place I looked, that's lucky.
