Tiktok is not the place to go for advice or tips. I swear, there was that video that shows how to make chocolate popcorn by simply putting chocolate bar in a rippling hot pan while you're popping kernals. Anyone who ever messed with chocolate or at least familiar with tempering chocolate would tell you it would just burn. Couldn't believe they would blatantly lie like that.

@@kaitlynb5467 my main method of coping was whining about it to my friends, then getting the the metaphorical slap of reasoning from them. Unbottling your worries can help a lot, and someone saying just get over it, while providing very reasonable points helps even further. I eventually got over it, came to acceptance that I'm not as gifted as them, but it dosent matter, cause art is something I should do because I love it. The second thing I do is get criticisms. I ask my friends what I should improve on, and while not artists, they point out some details I may have missed, which helps a lot. The third is to keep a certain goal for yourself. A while back I had made a photoshop edit art, combining real images and blending them all together, my one friend thought I had drawn it from scratch, and was blown away, until I said I didn't actually draw it. My goal is to get that exact reaction he had then, but legitimately. I hope this helps

Oh my gosh, that second one about tracing a photo and smudging the photo's colors around. I see this in art groups and it's SO obvious because the "imaginative details" (like the hair in that tiktok) are a totally different skill level. Like, that face is pretty cool. It has dimension and neat lighting. But that hair shading makes NO sense. It's just random blobs in random places. So when an artist does this and asks for critique and people say, "Wow, the face looks great, maybe you could add more detail and rendering like that to the hair," they can't do it. Because they don't actually know how to CREATE it, or even understand how it works on a fundamental level. I get so frustrated because if the artist just did their best to imitate the photo (without drawing directly on it), they'd probably learn a lot and maybe eventually they CAN draw like that.

That one about the airbrush tool starts off good by saying “you don’t need hundreds of brushes, you can make good art with just a few” but then it kinda fucks it up by specifying that the airbrush is all you need. Instead, it should’ve said something more like “try to limit yourself experiment and find what works for you, I personally find the airbrush tool really cool”
@squidwardishusbando7217
@squidwardishusbando7217 2 жыл бұрын
The airbrush works in certain styles. However in other styles it just makes the drawing look muddy or cloudy. Also sketching with the airbrush (I’ve only had this problem) it leaves unnecessary blurry lines, and you sometimes have to fight it to get a decent line. As an artist, I only use the airbrush for lighting in some scenarios. This is just my advice to beginners
@Dismiazs
@Dismiazs 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is the thing. Airbrush have a specific usage only and shouldn't be used as a main brush for most style (if any). Sadly, many new artist thought it's the go to brush. I myself use it only for lighting and effect like what you said (also some blush).
@larimar3239
@larimar3239 2 жыл бұрын
Airbrush is downright a bad brush and something that should never be used (contrary to what I heard some people say), but it really has some specific uses I personally think that using it for lighting is fine, shading is a 50/50... I think you CAN shade with it, but there are other ways for achieving a similiar result. However I'm just someone who draws for fun, wouldn't call myself an artist so I may be wrong
@Dismiazs
@Dismiazs 2 жыл бұрын
@@larimar3239 I wouldn't say it should never be used. Airbrush is a brush that I would consider as an effect brush. The same as brushes like dot spray and pattern brushes. This kind of brushes are used for a certain thing which they're the best at but suck at anything else.
@larimar3239
@larimar3239 2 жыл бұрын

If you're worried that you're not a good enough artist for your age, remember: Age and art skill level are not directly related. Someone can be old and a beginner or 12 and nearly a master. Also no one is perfect at art, especially if they are new to it, regardless of age. Practice, watching other artists work, using references, figuring out which areas you want to improve on and all sorts of other things will help you get skill over time and it's never too late to learn. Also some people are very skilled at one thing but not at another thing. For example someone could be amazing at hands and terrible at perspective, or someone might be skilled at 2D animation but not know how to do 3D animation. I'm better at drawing animals than humans, even though I draw both equally often. Also remember that art skill develops slowly so the best way to tell if you're improving in the way you want to is to look at your art from a few years ago, and a good way to improve is to pinpoint what you want to work on in your art and study that in depth.

I think age isn't that important, because many great artists only became artists after they retired, and I've been drawing since I was a child and didn't really get pretty good until I was like 20, so I think it's more the techniques you use rather then just raw experience or talent.

Don't be too depressed, I have a friend who I unintentionally turned into an artist since me and this friend of mine was an artist. me and my friend been drawing since elem, so he was really bummed out bc he was not at the same level as us. Let me tell you, if you think you're art isn't good enough, that's not true. Artist that draws ever since they were little do not improve much until they took their art seriously. People like you who got into art a bit "late" improve drastically. Since you're actively improving your art instead of drawing. Take my friend for example, he's just new to art but he already showed better progress than me and my friend were when we were beginners.

Struggled with the whole "younger artists are better than me" during my teens especially since it felt like I was still really bad at art even though I had been drawing for most of my life. Best advice like you said is to not worry about the personal details of the artist, and just focus on yourself. It can be very depressing knowing someone who is far younger has more skill than you and I personally get that. I stopped caring about all of that as I got older and since then my art has been improving drastically. Focus on you and don't feel like you need to reach perfection ASAP.

The third one is actually really good advice. It’s just the way she worded it. You don’t need like 20 brushes for one piece. A hard round brush and the airbrush is just enough. She even mentioned Sakimichan who does exactly that so it is good for beginners. Even Samdoesarts has mentioned this before. It also depends on if your good with blending and for hard shadows with an airbrush the selection tool is good for that.

I actually worked on a traced image in the background while listening. Tracing tips fall into a category of "easily heated and misinterpreted" because there are three different kinds of tracing: copying a final result(obviously bad), using it as the basis for studies(really good, given direction on what to study), and supporting a transformative process(good in the right context like rotoscoping or creating concept art). While I wouldn't defend the exact words of the Tiktoks, there are plenty of reasons to consider it. If you want to train your memory, you can set things up to trace, but then hide the reference as you work and periodically toggle it on to instantly reveal errors. Even the smallest smidge of difference will be obvious, so it's easy to study extremely tiny details this way, and when you hit a real head-scratcher where you can't figure out how to represent a form, being able to trace it a few times in different ways and get that fast feedback is a blessing - I think this is what the second video was trying to say(badly). It can be really fun to study a photo this way and try to gradually simplify it down to a cartoon while still retaining most of the information in the original. Likewise if the scene is conceptually and technically complex and demands high detail - go to town with the photobashing toolkit, 3D models, etc., to get the rough down; making the composition work as a final image basically always entails reinterpretation with new linework or paintovers, so even if you start by tracing, you won't end there and the intuitions from studying art fundamentals still kick in. It's extremely useful for the early stages of getting away from the blank page, and then less useful as you try to make the image more specific in what it communicates.

I really want you to do this again one day because I laughed my brains out on this video. Another tutorial I saw once is about hands.. It said something like "what to do so you don't have to draw hands, hide them behind the back, long sleeves, headshots!" ect, etc, and I was like.. ok?? if you don't want to learn, improve and get anywhere with your art then do that I guess.. I know hands are hard to make but omg you just need to learn how to do it! my hands look like shit but I still draw them because what's the point of avoiding them?? Same happens with people who just flips the eye to make the other or covers it.. bruh the perspective will be the same in every piece if you do that and it's stupid.. just draw both eyes at the same time, it's easier, idk how nobody thinks about that, I never did one eye and then the other, I always did both and never understood why people suffered with them until I saw they were making it one by one.. bruh

I've given art advice before and after realizing I'm not improving as much I kind of just didn't tell people stuff anymore. I wanted to let people learn the way that they can. Someone did, however, asked me for an art tutorial on how to draw hair. I was like, "man there's so many tutorials out there that are way better than my anime character's hair." Sometimes people just don't know what they want when it comes to art content and that's perfectly normal. Which is the reason why I'll never post on tiktok.

In actuality... people love to see simple line drawings that don't look like kids drawings...but they're also not teaching u any skill because most people aren't into learning art, most just wanna learn how to draw like... a circle with a couple of little trees contours, a line for the horizon and idfk, a little circle for a moon or something. And then show their classmates what they did in their notebook and get told they're the best at drawing from the class... That's literally what being an artist means here and it was really really hard for me to even discover there are fundamentals I had to know about, that's how much of this easy content I'd see 4-5 years ago when I was just starting and honestly I don't even remember how I broke through that because I never tried to do any of those simple drawings until my friend would ask me to. And I looked at her drawings and I said good job for trying it looks amazing! Keep learning! But when they asked me to teach them I started with perspective because that's what I thought it's the easiest to teach at that time but they lost interest when I'd ask for them to draw a couple of boxes in 1 point... and then I realized...they don't wanna go with drawing further in life. And that was okay. But I would always get sad at the knowledge that she hated the fact that her drawings don't look like the flawless perfect lines they do in the video and without sketch lines, directly starting to do the lineart wondering why does it look so wonky...my heart broke for my poor friend who wouldn't understand...

You are absolutely right. I also started drawing "seriously" 4/5 years ago, and the only art videos that I could find (not knowing what to look for of course) were low effort sunset drawings, bad "do/don't tutorials" and such. At the time I didn't even know they were really bad advice and aspired to get those kind of results. I only got out of it when I was randomly recommended an actual art tutorial by an actual artist and finally understood that something was wrong. As you said, I didn't know about any fundamentals and even thought that sketching was a bad drawing habit because of those videos that all start with the final outline. This is so harmful for beginner artists, I completely agree with you.

A little bit on the airbrush tool. You CAN ONLY use the airbrush, but please change the density of the brush and it’s spread (?). There’s a setting in clip studio where you can dial up and down how soft the edges are. An artist that mainly uses the soft airbrush is Jhyundee. What’s more, if you want to use just an air brush and dont want to dial the hardness around, pair it up with the lasso tool.

8:16 my opinion abt tracing. It's basically like coping from your deskmate all of the math homework (or also rewrite the math solution what your math teacher is giving). There is smart ways of how you can copy that homework(or solutions). But also if you keep coping homework without even trying to think abt it then too bad you will probably fail math test and have 0 fundamental knowledge on math so it means you will probably fail even next test and so on. But as I said, there is smart ways of how you can copy that homework/solutions. And it does help to look how people solves these problems, if you dont understand how they did it then you can ask them simple questions on how they did that. I think that tiktok video tried to show us that we can use tracing tehnique way smarter than just draw over mindlessly those drawn lines.

I'm busting my ass off all day, putting as much effort as I can, going back to back in any resource about drawing, staging, writting, storytelling, camera angles to have a somewhat quality cohesive storytelling narrative and some random bloke drawing pyramids in 1 minute per day effortlessly grabs thousands upon thousands of views.

4:02 I used to do this with 3d models or pictures I found online and it honestly really damaged my progress of making anything decent that I liked. It made me rely on images instead of practicing lines and how to shade things properly from scratch. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to do but it can really stunt your growth. I do not recommend doing this. At least in my opinion Years later I put forth hours/days of effort into drawing and learning art. And I like my art a lot better than with this old method I used.

I think one of the best tips is that you take one of your old drawings and draw it new. Then you can see the progress you made when comparing them. Its not really a tip but seeing your own progress motivates you. Comparing yourself to other artists is a thing you shouldnt do. Look at your own art to see the progress you made. How these "Do/Don't" "tutorials" piss me off is how everyone got their own artstyle and they straight up deny others artstyles because they think theirs is better. Some cartoon artist with simple arm can be popular and they doesnt have to draw extra realistic arm. They should show how to use drawing tools instead of dumb "draw like me or you suck kind of video".
