In this video I have a look at a customers GMC Yukon Denali with the big 6.2 that was towed in for a no start not crank. I have seen this enough times it's just as easy to take a guess rather than busting out the tools. Not to mention we already did a video on one of these.
-Enjoy!
UPDATE: Customer had me bypass the connector and throw away the module and the battery light went out after tightening up the positive terminal. I just had it resting on there when I went out in the lot to bring it in. Now he can go get a sticker on it and get it on the road 🙄

Living my whole life in Michigan and as a retired mechanic I always thought Michigan was the "King of the Rust Belt" when it came to rust damage to vehicles. After watching your videos and seeing the extensive damage to PRNY vehicles I bow to the King. One question, do you sometimes get concerned about even lifting a car on the hoist in fear that the frame could completely fail?

Years ago, I can remember back in the 1960's and 1970s, here in The Great Industrial Northeast, you would get about three years before rust started poking its way out of your nice new shiny car paint. Now, with stainless steel exhaust systems, anti corrosion paints, galvanized metal, and plastics, you can get about eight years before the rust starts showing itself.

Not defending GM, cause I would never buy one anymore either. But the reality is all car in NYS will end up like this if you don't wash the underside regularly or get it oil sprayed. New York state dumps a ridiculous amount of rock salt on the roads because it is very cheap there. Livingston County, New York, location of American Rock Salt, the largest operating salt mine in the United States with a capacity for producing up to 18,000 tons each day. And the government instead of taxing customers to use less destructive ice management methods would just rather pass that cost on to the customer through rotting their car out in 10 years and the people of NYS just accept it.

When you think about it a doctor is no different than a repair technician. They both use their training and education, diagnostic tools, and experience to make a diagnosis (best guess) of whats wrong and how to remedy. A good doctor does this, same with a top mechanic. The best do it more often than others. So my son, it's not a lucky guess. It's your experience and education that came up with the answer. Bask in the knowledge that you were right and made money, that's when it all pays off. Very satisfying video, my admiration of your skills went up another notch.

I have a 53" International 2 Ton dump truck (grain truck) and it's frame is still immaculate. I've never seen rust as bad as this here in Oklahoma-- never. You might see the occasional rust hole in a rocker panel or around the fenders etc- on a 1970's or 80's pickup.. But otherwise, rust doesn't really exist; once the steel gets a paint job, it typically lasts virtually forever. I don't see how you guys deal with it. I couldn't image buying a brand new truck knowing that it probably won't last 10 years. smh.. That's just insane. I've always bought vehicles that have 150k to 170k miles-- and THEN I drive them for 10 more years after that, and run them past 300k. So IDK-- You guys are a different breed accepting this kind of wealth drain. I can't wrap my head around it.

Eric, it would be very beneficial for your viewers to see the difference between a car like this and one that has had an oil treatment every 1-2 years. Obviously, they are a lot rarer but to see the difference, even in 2 different cars, would be very helpful.

I think he has shown that in the past couple of years or so. He even fluid films his vehicles and while it may not stop the rust, but it'll slow it down a fair amount to prolong its life before it becomes scrap.

Once the frame is gone it is game over. I am climbing under my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee today to decide if I purchase a new rear frame cradle (bolts onto the frame) for $1,000 or start the timer on the crusher. Fingers crossed.

Hey Eric, Down here in Austin, TX when I see the rust damage caused by salt up in NY, I just thank my lucky stars. I'll never gripe again about doing standard maintenance on our vehicles again! Yup, experience has more value than book learnin'. PS, when I see Mrs. O come out with her hands on her hips, I get nervous. When my wife comes out like that, I immediately think, "Oh, crap she's got another problem..."

That's crazy that a bad module can cause everything else to give up, yet when you disconnect it, everything is working again
@jtjones4727
@jtjones4727 8 ай бұрын
That's kind of the point of CAN bus. The 2 lines/pull up/pull down design gives it a bit of extra robustness, the idea being that if a module starts corrupting data, the network can still operate. Although in actual operation it doesn't always end up that way. The idea of CAN bus actually started as a field bus for automation in factories and between factory systems. I think Bosch kind of lifted that idea to develop Can-bus back in the 80's.
@major__kong
@major__kong 8 ай бұрын
Sure. If the module dies the network keeps working. But the problem with CAN is that if the interface at the module gets damaged, it's taking down the network because of how CAN strings modules. If CAN were a star or home run topology, these kinds of problems wouldn't happen. A star topology like Ethernet would just ignore the crap happening on that port whether it was the module proper or the interface to the module. Not saying we need Ethernet here.

@@major__kongwrong… Plenty of cars like bmw and mercedes have a star topology where all the dual wires go to a central connector. If a module goes bad, network goes down. You go to that connector, and disconnect each tiny connection until the network comes to life just like the string network

Just read where a newer out of warranty F150 with a leaking rear tail light with modules built in it caused the truck to quit running and cost the guy $5700.00 for a tail light and the repair, and the owner just wanted to know how soon he could get his truck back! didn't care about price!

Living in the South, I've never coated a vehicle and never owned a vehicle with any rust issues. If I lived anywhere that used salt, for sure I would do annual or semiannual coatings. But here, it's just an unnecessary mess, and makes working on the vehicle unpleasant.
