Weld County Sherriff’s Deputy Sam Brownlee, was killed in the line of duty in 2010 after a police chase, after suspect Rueben Reyes got out of the stolen car, Brownlee tackled him to the ground and was fatally shot when Reyes pried away his own gun. Reyes died after being shot by a Colorado Police Officer.
5 years later Sam’s squad car was to be auctioned off on to benefit C.O.P.S (Concerns of Police Survivors), an organization that helps survivors of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
Tanner Brownlee wanted to own a part of his father's legacy, and after nearly five years since losing him, Tanner had a chance to buy his dad's squad car at auction.
Unfortunately, Tanner had not planned on the bid for the car being so high, and the bidding price quickly surpassed what he could afford. The young man's hopes were crushed when local farmer Steve Wells outbid Tanner, paying $60,000, even though the car's Kelley Blue Book value was only $12,500.
But seconds after the auctioneer handed Wells the keys to the squad car, the farmer turned to face Tanner, "Tanner? Here's your car," said Wells as he handed the young man the keys.
The entire room erupted in applause as an emotional Tanner accepted Wells' gift, thanking and hugging him for his incredible generosity.
Originally Steve was going to buy the car for the Women’s Shelter, and then he found out about Tanner’s story and he decided to buy it for him, even though the two had never previously met.
The man who won the bid was Steve Wells, a local rancher who owns several acres of oil-rich land in the area. He declined an interview, saying he did not want to take the moment away from Tanner and his family.
Tanner said he plans to keep the car forever, and to one day, hand it down to his kids.
Thanks for watching

★★★ *FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE VIDEO / FACT UPDATES* ★★★ *1) Why pay $60k for a Charger with 147 thousand miles on it, valued at $12,500?* - The person with the winning bid was Steve Wells, a local rancher who owns several acres of oil-rich land in the area. He may have owed a lot of money to TAX that year, so instead of giving it to the tax man, he did a tax write-off and donated it to this Police Charity and did a very good thing in the process, by getting Tanner his dad's car. *(that is just my guess)* Plus the $60k was a donation to charity, the car was just an incentive to bid. Plus the extra incentive to keep biding, was because he wanted to give the car to tanner. *2) Why didn't the police department just give Tanner the car* - Police vehicles are public assets bought with tax payers money, it's not their car to simply give away. *3) Why was the Auction being filmed* - It was a Police Auction in a small town for Charity, so it made the local NEWS, various NEWS channels did a story on this Auction and how Tanner got the car he was after. *4) Why were various people bidding and running up the price so high* - As stated this was a charity and a tax write off, they may have all had the same idea, to keep bidding no matter what, pay a nice chunk of money to charity and get a big tax write off, or they may have all wanted to buy the car for tanner, no one covered this in the original news stories, so I do not know. *5) How rich is the farmer Steve Wells* - (a viewer who lives in that area stated the following) "Steve wells, is a wealthy man and donates a lot of money for the sheriffs office. I believe he owns a very nice ranch and does something with cattle and longhorns. he literally has longhorns roaming freely on his property." *6) What is a Tax write off* - Tax deductible donations are contributions of money to a tax-exempt organization such as a charity. Tax deductible donations can reduce taxable income. So a basic example would be, instead of getting taxed on $1 million dollars income, after making a $60k donation to the police charity, he now gets taxed on $940k income. (not exactly like this, but you get the idea) *7) What happen to the $3,465 GoFundMe money raised* - it was donated to charity *8) For all those who think the Auctioneer was speaking too fast, listen to how fast a world champion Auctioneer speaks* - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNRjf7pi38-RZGg.html

@Gabriel Saint I agree w/you. There are still a lot of good people in our world. Many of them wealthy. But, many who aren't too. I love that Tanner got the car & I love the man who paid the selling amount for caring about Tanner after the loss of his father. I hope Tanner's children will someday own the car & the tradition of passing it along to the next generation will go on for many years to come.

Even if he deducts the purchase from his taxes, he will only benefit or recover the percentage of his expense equivalent to his maximum tax bracket, which would be around 37% max. So he still ends up paying the net difference (63% x 62,000) or about 39,000 from his bank account after the tax deduction. The bottom line is, he is a generous and kindhearted man, or is it the other way around? God bless him.

@@noir.9354 Thank you for your thoughts and for sharing them in a kind way. I think I see what you are saying. I might disagree on the surface, but deep down I think it would be hard to argue against the idea of “psychological egoism” which is the idea that everything we do is selfishly motivated. I don’t think that is easy to prove, but it “feels” a little like that could be true. Interesting stuff to think about. At the end of the day, if every action *is* selfish, then this farmer probably picked the least selfish option!

broke in tears as soon as I see both the mom and Tanner wipe their tears as soon as they realize they can't surpass the bid. As a mom, there's nothing more heartbreaking seeing your kid cry and you know you can't do anything about it but you wish you can just carry the burden for them. Godbless Mr. Steve for his generous act

Tax writeoffs. It’s a crazy world we live in. However you’re right and I think he did this as a charitable act. I just wish it didn’t have to be the way it is. A lot of corporations only donate small % so they can look good AND not have to pay taxes.

"What? How dare you even suggest that the media should show ANYTHING other than our glorious Vice President and her sidekick Joe 'Hairy Legs' What's-His-Face! 'All cops are evil racists anyway', that's what everyone on Twitter and Facebook tells me! And they would never lead me astray!" Btw, are you honestly surprised this wasn't a headline on the mainstream media, or were you asking a rhetorical question? And, I completely agree with you, my friend. If more stories like this were shown rather than the glorification of BLM riots and looting, our nation would be a lot less divided. It's a sad day to be an American.

Probably true as it’s selling way above value, from my experience ex-police cars sell under value. Also the camera positions himself in front of Tanner before bidding had stopped so I think they already knew he would get it. In the end great act and great donation to police foundation.
