G'day Nick, Sona is playing a West African instrument called a Kora. It is a 24 string harp like instrument. The resonance comes from a dried and hollowed out gourd (similar to a pumpkin), it then has a timber neck and traditionally it's strung with animal gut strings. The percussion instrument is also a made from a gourd, it's called a calabash. I play a similar instrument to Sona, called a Kamele Ngoni it is exactly the same but has 12 strings. Such a beautiful instrument to play. I play it to our children to put them to sleep. The song Jarabi (also spelled Diarabi) is a love song that first became popular with many kora players and guitarists in Mali, Gambia and Guinea in the early 1960’s. Jarabi (“Beloved”) praises the all-conquering power of love and the song went on to become associated with the celebrations of community, nationhood and the African cultural renaissance that was flowering at the time that West African nations gained independence. The instrument is called a kora. It's a West African instrument with 21 strings and it combines the elements of a lute and a harp at the same time. I've played one once and it was a little awkward to hold. Welcome to West African music: relaxing and beautiful at the same time.
