In the middle of the set of 24 preludes in all different keys Op. 11, Scriabin limits himself to use only the diatonic notes of D-flat major in slowly moving melodic lines harmonized in thirds. Needless to say it's a great exercise for legato playing in the left hand, which has to play the thirds before the right hand enters with a soaring but tragic melody.

One might argue that 11/15 is actually difficult since there are so few notes....

It's always like that - when there's fewer notes, each note is more important and that means higher demand on the quality of those notes. Same with Mozart and Bach I find. But still, not difficult in a technical sense of having to move the fingers fast.

Surprising challenges here! I'm struggling to keep everything even and under control. Good vegetables for my left hand! Easy to learn too, so I can go straight into thinking about control and technique without having to put too much energy into remembering what the notes are supposed to be! Measure 4 is a Dominant 13 chord. That is how it functions. You can easily hear that it wants a Db Major chord to come next. And measure 8 cadences on a full cadence on a Tonic 13 chord. In late Scriabin, the 13 is a very important chord tone along with the #9.

Thanks! Very good lesson, beautiful prelude & that seems to be a nice piano, too. Playing these double notes softly, legato and exactly at the same time needs some practise and good fingering.

If I may offer a different perspective on the harmonic analysis of measures 2 and 4: m.2 implies the dominant 7 and not the ii chord and m.4 implies the tonic chord not the iii chord. It isn't until the right hand enters does the harmonies become solidified. However, until then we can easily say that the left hand solo simply outlines a dominant-tonic relationship. To further support this, look at the opening bars of Debussy's Clair de Lune. We don't think f-minor with the first thirds, we feel the DbMaj tonic instead.
