To me some of your later comments would be akin to commenting on an early Beatles record, "kinda simple, kinda basic." At the time no one was doing much of anything like the Pixies, which is why they garnered such praise from bands like Nirvana and Radiohead. Put yourself in a world where there is like pop, metal, classic rock, mostly 3-chord punk, and then the Pixies come along and do like 10 songs are completely original, lyrically novel, musically interesting, and don't fit into any standard lanes. I'm not aware of any bands that were as original as the Pixies in relation to their musical moment while still sounding great, with the possible exception of The Velvet Underground.

I know! So interesting how brains just process those sounds differently. It was the first Pixies song I ever heard and thought "hmm bit quirky - I think I like it". But didn't listen to more pixies for maybe a year or so. After that point, Doolittle is one of my top albums, and hey is one of my favourite pieces ever.

First time I heard Hey was when spotify randomely added it to my playlist, at first I thought this is so weird and I was actually gonna remove it from the playlist but never got around to it. It kept comming on here and there and every time I would think this is too weird for me and that I should remove it, but a few listens later it slowly grew on me and by now its one of my favorite songs of all time. You really need to listen to songs a lot of times before you can truly appreciate them.

sometimes, just because an album is pioneering a sound and innovated a lot at the time, doesn't mean its still interesting to a listener today, since we've heard lot of music influenced by this record, the things that made it interesting back then become less interesting now since we have heard a lot of other bands that have a similar vibe. that being said, i love pixies and this record is really good LOOOOL

La La Love You definitely fits on the album. It’s all very intentional. “Hey” is an amazing track. When you get the parts down it’s the most fun to sing a long with because there is some tricky vocal parts that you seemed to have missed. The chorus is repetitive, the verses are not in any way.

Surfer Rosa is one of Thom Yorke’s fave albums so I recommended that one if you want to take a gander at the Pixies again. I’d say Surfer Rosa is a way grittier, “sexier” album. Extremely influential. Nirvana was hugely influenced by them and that album.

listen to surfer rosa - my favourite pixies album and if you find this ‘hard to care about’ i think the personality and rawness of surfer rosa, plus the genius of songs like where is my mind make that album impossible to feel disinterested towards, as well as being one of the high points of the indie rock of the era alongside bands like sonic youth (i still love doolittle)

I'm a big fan of the album - had it on cassette when it came out; in my view, the lyrics are of course meant to be kind of shocking, twisted and cynical but also seasoned with black humor (this is more evident on re-listens); it's the darkness juxtaposed with the 'happy' melodies and harmonies; it's the religious preacher coupled with the ragged guitar - it's an aesthetic of the flipside of the American Dream - the American Waking Nightmare. The tone reminds me of comedians like Bill Hicks, a trailblazer of dark comedy in the 1980s.

That quiet/loud thing had a huge impact on music. Think about Nirvana, for example. They were into the same quiet/loud kind of sound but with a lot more intensity. It might be just a normal thing right now but it wasn't back then.

His lyrics can be a bit cryptic, and sometimes they are just something that fits and rhymes and sounds good. There are the songs with the Biblical references, “Dead” and “Gouge Away” in particular. If you like the variety in his vocal style, check out the solo Frank Black album “Teenager of the Year.” He goes from punk to a high pitch vocal to a low pitch vocal in the first four songs.

It's important to understand the context, you have to disregard the whole of the 90's and beyond to really appreciate the album. I was 14 when it came out and it was unlike anything I'd heard before, this album was the transition from the hair metal rock era of the 80's into the indie grunge scene of the 90's. They influenced almost every band of that era and they still sound original compared to the rest. But if you didn't enjoy 'hey' then I guess you might not get it!

Pixies have been incredibly influential, especially in altL rock. Basically, every song using the loud quiet loud pattern got it from pixies. Fun fact, nirvana almost didn't include the song that made them huge and I can't think of the name of because they thought they were ripping off pixies too much. Policies got over it.

Bowie praised the Pixie’s as the best American band. They were a College band from Boston. Kurt Cobain said Teen Spirit was his attempt at writing a Pixie’s song. So they have influenced others. Checkout Surfer Rosa! I think it’s their best album besides their debut. The Pixies 🧚‍♂️ play sold out outdoor Festivals in Europe and are popular in England too. They will never be huge because Black Francis doesn’t look like Simon Le Bon. He’s not pretty. But he’s a great songwriter and screamer!

To put it into a timeline perspective, the pixies were Michael Jordan of indie music in the 80s/90s. Their influence hasn’t stopped today. Another thing, I’m confused as to why all reactors of your generatuon needs to fully dissect every aspect. We use to just enjoy it for all its brilliance. Until the internet, we had no idea what anyone was talking about. There is some bliss in ignorance where it counts. We used I just get lost in the music. No need to understand. Just love the feeling and dance everything away and get out of our heads.

Your generation has been brought up on playlists and skipping tracks, it doesn't really sit through albums. Try listening to music from earlier eras on vinyl, with external speakers, by yourself, with no distractions like phones, tablets or laptops. It'll improve your attention span and you'll experience the music the way the artist intended.
