The Song of the Onion was a popular song used during the French Revolution and by the First French Empire; it was especially popular among the Imperial Guard and Grenadier regiments. It is also an official song of the French Foreign Legion.
It's unknown where the song originally came from, but legend says it originated among the grenadiers of Napoleon's Imperial Guard. Before the Battle of Marengo, Napoleon found some grenadiers rubbing an onion on their bread, and he said "Very good, there is nothing better than an onion for marching on the road to glory." Afterwards, Napoleon heard his men singing it during the actual Battle of Marengo on June 14, 1800.

For the people that don't know the story behind this song, it was in 1800 before the battle of Marengo, Napoleon saw his Grenadiers preparing meal before battle and asked them what they were cooking. The grenadiers answered that it was fried onions. Napoleon then said it was a good way to Glory... and that's how the song was made.

The story behind this song is fascinating. Napoleon was on his first conquest of Italy, his men woefully undersupplied having to scrape anything they could get together to eat. As he was riding along he saw two French grenadiers rubbing an onion on to a piece of bread. Seeing this he asked them what they were doing. They replied they were eating an onion. He then said, "Very good, there is nothing better than an onion for marching on the road to glory." The song evolved from that incident, and went on to become the song of the Garde Impériale, comprised of his best grenadiers. It's especially associated with the Old Guard, mostly comprised of the tallest, and most experienced of Napoleon's men. It's why he was called short, even though he was of average height. He surrounded himself with comparative giants. Many of the Old Guard fought with him on that original Italian campaign, all the way through the disastrous Russian campaign, and eventually on to Waterloo. The Imperial Guard sang this song, having never been defeated, as they marched up a hill at the battle of Waterloo. There the Duke of Wellington sat next to his officer Maitland with his brigade of troops positioned behind cover along the hill's ridge. It was the last time they would ever fight for Napoleon in a battle.

It seems the joke has gone over your head, friend. Like a HE-111. Let me explain it to you, to help you. The french have made a song about Onions, implying that they like onions, and are willing to kill people for their onions. That's one part of the punchline done. Keep it up, you are doing well. The second part of the joke is that the french lastly retreated from Dunkirk, didn't they? Ya know, it would be very funny if I said that instead of retreating from Dunkirk, they simply needed onions. In a language you can understand: French onion stash dunkirk funny :P

For people who don't get it: The onion (Allium cepa L., from Latin cepa meaning "onion"), also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is a vegetable that is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium. The shallot is a botanical variety of the onion which was classified as a separate species until 2010. This genus also contains several other species variously referred to as onions and cultivated for food, such as the Japanese bunching onion (Allium fistulosum), the tree onion (A. ×proliferum), and the Canada onion (Allium canadense). The name wild onion is applied to a number of Allium species, but A. cepa is exclusively known from cultivation. Its ancestral wild original form is not known, although escapes from cultivation have become established in some regions. The onion is most frequently a biennial or a perennial plant, but is usually treated as an annual and harvested in its first growing season.

The French defeats in 1870 and 1940 was mainly due to Germans seizing the great hidden onion reserves in northeastern France. They are the source of the French army's power. They'd been moved further south after 1871, which was why the French won WW1, but out of overconfidence, they were reinstalled near the border after 1918. Franco-German wars have essentially relied on preserving or capturing this great resource.
