In this lesson, I show you how to play the song "Pancho and Lefty" as performed by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. This song was originally written by Townes Van Zandt and released in 1972. Van Zandt's version is a bit different: he plays in a different key, uses a distinct fingerpicking style instead of strumming, and doesn't play the recognizable intro heard in the Willie & Merle version. Here, I'll show you how to the chords needed, explain the strumming pattern, break down the chord progressions for the verse & chorus, and walk you through the intro riff - with tabs included.
0:00 Playthrough
1:25 Chords Needed
1:43 Strumming Pattern
2:27 Verse
3:00 Chorus
5:09 Intro Riff

I think as far as KZfaq guitar lessons go, this is about as close to perfection as it gets. I suppose some folks might be disappointed that you didn't play it according to TVZ; but as much as I would love to play it like him, I have to realize that is way out of my reach (for now). I look upon this version as a gateway to perform his version, and, if I'm extremely lucky, I might someday play it like TVZ. I really like the song notes you provide. Most of all I like that you provided a simple method for a song (and songwriter) I really love.

Glad to hear! I only really first heard this song in the past year or two... but its an immediate all-time favorite. Hard to tell whose version I like better (Van Zandt's live acoustic performances, or this Willie/Merle version). Speaking of Townes Van Zandt, I just this week started finally to practice the Travis fingerpicking style - that he / John Prine / many others use. Excited to do lessons for more of their songs eventually.

You are quite good, Kiddo! Your Video is excellent, your notes with chords and words are a big plus I am sure for many. Have been playing and singing over 50 years! Could do without the strumming patterns, LOL.....but am sure they are great for some. Have subscribed! Seems a lot of others have good taste also. SO, I am retired....but How do you make money from all of this? I am WELL aware of what it takes for you to just produce ONE song with all of your extras? You independently wealthy? Thanks for improving my Pancho and Lefty so easily!

Yeah so basically take that Bm shape, and instead of barring with your index finger just fret the second fret on the high E string, keep all the other fingers the same. It's still a Bm chord just without the barre so it's a bit easier to play.
@marcrumsower475
@marcrumsower475 5 жыл бұрын
NO, learn Bm.
@acousticgazzband6812
@acousticgazzband6812 5 жыл бұрын
You could transpose the song to the key of C and then an Am will go there, or you may want to try a capo on the second fret (to keep the song in the key of D) and use C positioning (C, F, G, Am) which then allows you to use an Am chord in place of a bar Bm. The easiest thing, in the long run, is to bite the bullet, study the fingering, and learn to use the bar Bm because that is a very useful chord position to know as you get more accomplished,

is there an alternative chord for the bar chord Bm
@doughertzog3269
@doughertzog3269 2 жыл бұрын
Both of these suggestions will reduce the impact the barred Bm chord in this song, but they are both Bm's:. Try putting your index finger down on the 1st string at the 2nd fret, then making the shape of an Am within the next higher 2 frets. That's the same thing as the barred chord is doing, but this way you can't play the two big strings, because they are open. An even easier way to get a Bm is on the 7th fret, but this one is even less effective when used in this song. It might help you with something else. Just bar the 1st three strings at the 7th fret.

If you watch Willie, Townes, Dylan play this, they do not play full chords during the G D A part. They play triads or 2 note descending patterns, fills. No bass notes in this part.

I saw this lesson years ago, and while it get's you by enough to do a campfire version of the song, I wanted to learn the song well. I came here again today, and for the first time went to your website to see if you had yet delivered on your promise to show the solo section "in another video", and what you called at the time you made this video, "the 6/4 measure he sneaks in there" (possibly not an exact quote, but oh well). I would have happily paid for your complete lesson, but no. It is still being neglected. Turns out that 4-1/2 years later, it's still as BB King might say.."Someday, Baby". There are a couple of good videos posted now that can help you learn the instrumental break. One is by Khalome Cash called "guitar lesson for Roger - Pancho and Lefty solo" (in a separate video called " Guitar lesson for roger Pancho and Lefty Part 2", he shows the entire song with chords and some alternative flavoring done mostly with double stops. Another learning aid presented by Eric Unser, called, "Pancho And Lefty by Willy Nelson and Merle Haggard". That is simply Eric playing along with the recording, but you can slow it down and learn something watching his fingering. There are others too, but what doesn't seem to be covered yet, are the chords that the instrumental are played over and maybe what you were calling a 6/4 measure, I read as some 2/4 measures slipped in throughout the entire song, and how to count the time while playing the solo. Especially moving into and through the nice descending run, I believe Merle does about 2/3 of the way through the solo. Get back to work on this David. Some of us are counting on you keeping your word. Overall, pretty much good work you do, but you've been slacking with this one my friend, a song you claim you fell in love with.
