Songs that didn't hold up is back with a 2000s edition! We look at Owl City "Fireflies", Sum 41 "Fat Lip", Metro Station "Shake It", NSYNC "Pop", Limp Bizkit "Rollin", Trapt "Headstrong", Vanessa Carlton "A Thousand Miles" and ask, did these songs hold up?

The wrist bands also have a practical use. When playing in my punk band I wore them to reduce friction burns on my forearm due to strumming with poor technique. I've never really had that problem, but that might be because, when I did play music, I was more of a metal guitarist than a punk guitarist, and the lessons that taught me were always like, "Good metal picking comes from the wrist, not the elbow. limp Bizkit are easy to like for a few reasons- nostalgia- catchy- Wes Borland song writing- simplicity- contagious fake confidence- comedic undertones- and weirdly, the unique timbre of Fred Durst’s voice. When I try to truly put my finger on one thing that makes it work I still can’t find it. It’s like how I strongly dislike tomatoes on their own, but love a good chunky salsa 🤷‍♂️

I saw her live like ~10 years ago when “rabbits on the run” came out. I’d never really listened to her but obviously knew 1000 miles, and my girlfriend was really into her. Ended up really liking that album and the following one, a lot. Haven’t kept up with her since then or checked out her earlier stuff. 1000 Miles will always remind me of my girlfriend, who passed away several years ago.

You hit me right in the feels with this one. My childhood right there + all of the descriptions you made, I feel them. If I recall correctly owl City's name comes from a tree near his parents house that had a large amount of owls living in it. Because of his insomnia Adam would take a walk at night to relax and saw the tree that looked like an "owl city" and he watched them until he was calm then would go home and write music until he fell asleep.

The first time I heard Limp Bizkit was on a demo tape my friend got at a Korn show. That and the subsequent 3 Dollar Bill album blew my mind. Then Significant Other was also awesome but felt a bit more simple with more pop sensibility. By Chocolate Starfish you could feel that they were just dicking around and enjoying their fame but my friends and I didn't care because it was still fun. I have fond memories of going to alternative clubs in the early 2000s, doing the Rollin' arm movement and having a blast being a young idiot. Fun Fact: Joey Fatone didn't do much of the break dancing scenes because he hurt (or had surgery or something I can't remember) his leg. Nsync used their choreographer had dressed up like Joey to fill in most of the standing/dancing parts for him. This is why Joey is mostly sitting down, his face is blurry, and he is placed in the back. You can watch all about it in the making of the Dirty Pop video.

Headstrong is peak early 2000s WWE Pay-per-view theme-core. I wonder where Terry Crews' career would be without 1000 Miles. I hope on your twitch stream you mentioned the historical significance of the Rollin' Music video. That video and the 2001 VMAs with denim suit Britney and Justin were the last gasps of turn of the millennium culture. I've commented on it before, but the movie he directed makes me think Fred was not in on the joke. Check Yes Juliet was a strictly worse version of The Great Escape by Boys Like Girls.

I like Terry Crews in White Chicks, but my man had an established career long before being featured in that movie. You all forget Everybody Hates Chris? He was the dad. Pitched and recorded as he was doing White Chicks. He also had features in Malibu’s Most Wanted (8ball), Soul Plane, Friday After Next (Damon - his most memorable character for me during that era), Starsky & Hutch (Porter), and was pitched for Cheeseburger Eddie in The Longest Yard and President Camacho in Idiocracy before White Chicks officially released due to how well-known he was for being a big buff guy in comedies. Mad respect to the man for getting where he is today through features in black comedies beyond singing a song.

I’m almost certain Owl City was influenced heavily by Joy Electric, a project of Ronnie Martin’s(who is now a pastor, and the brother of Jason from Starflyer 59). Very very niche, because outside of having a lot of faith-based songs, he also had a strict “analog only” approach to electronic music, which is why I love it, the dude was authentic and a great artist. His covers album was odd, but interesting and included blink’s I Miss You
