Song was sung in 1965. Vietnam war era. Listen to this with the perspective that there were thousands of men and women hoping to return to their loved ones from the war. Adds the emotion of the time period.👍

The last high notes at the end is not on the cut record, Bobby told Bill he was going to go for it and Bill told him if he missed it it would ruin the whole performance, Bobby went for it anyway and at the end you see him bit his bottom lip with a little smile, he knew he nailed it.

This was the live performance on the Andy Williams Show, a great singer on his own. Bobby's Mom and Dad were in the audience and he had a head cold. He was nervous, but no one could tell. Bobby won the coin toss to record this as a solo with Bill producing it. They were good friends and their voices together were magical.

If you want to discover some fascinating artists, these guys are a great choice. The Righteous Brothers were huge in the sixties. They had 22 songs on the Billboard top 100 and in 1965 had three albums in the top 20 at one time. Their song ‘You’ve Lost that Lovin Feeling’ is the most played song of the 20th century…. And well into the 21st (was passed by ‘Every Breath You Take’ in 2019. It was also recognized by the Library of Congress in 2014 as having ‘significant cultural influence’. They started out with straight hard rock n roll for their first three years together, then were given ballads with Phil Specter’s Wall of Sound behind them. They also sang blues and gospel. They wrote a lot of their own material and some of it was covered by everyone from Mitch Ryder to Bruce Springsteen (Little Latin Lupe Lu, which was their first hit). Between Bobby’s counter tenor and Bill’s bass baritone they could cover most of the piano keyboard and their harmonies were stunning.🙂

@@MattFarkas 😁blues… ‘I Just Wanna Make Love to You’ and ‘Summertime’. Rock…. ‘My Babe’ and ‘Justine!’ (Not the live version… this is a bit raunchy and it was sanitized for TV) ‘American Rock n Roll’ (written by Bill). Gospel…. ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ standards… ‘Ebb Tide’ there is no live version of this, but a tribute singer does it live with Bobby’s name so don’t be fooled

they are not a "soul group" but are often referred to as "blue eyed soul", because of their soulful lyrics and songs sung with soul in their voices. Bobby Hatfield has the high 3 octave voice. the other 1/2 of the duo is Bill Medley - low baritone range. Great harmony. This song has been done numerous times, but this was in 1965, live, and there aren't any auto-tunes or computer-assist gizmos back then. Bobby owns this song. Check out their hit recorded live in 1964 - You've lost that loving feeling(featuring both singers) and '66 live recording of Soul and Inspiration(both singing with an emphasis on Medley).

Righteous Brothers were my favorite! Although there were only two of them, their songs could always touch your soul! I was 13 year old when this song came out. Today, I am 71 years old. I had the 45 single record in 1966 and now it’s on my iTunes playlist. I love this song more today than I did in 1966! Check out Soul and Inspiration to get an idea of the duets. Both Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield suffered tragically during their life. Bill Medley’s wife was raped and murdered, yet the police didn’t solve the crime until 41 years later. Bobby Hatfield was woken up by his manager while on tour. He was found dead in his hotel room. Cause of death was listed as cocaine overdose which exacerbated a less serious heart condition. “Rest in Peace, guys and keep singing in rock and roll Heaven “!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤

Bobby was 25 yrs old when this was recorded in 1965. The song was called Unchained Melody because it was from a prison movie called "Unchained", made in 1955. The prisoner sings it in the movie wondering if his girl is still waiting for him when he gets out.

This was a rare solo performance by Bobby that I watched live on the Andy Williams Show in 1965. The studio recording is both Bobby and Bill together and the recording you hear in the movie Ghost. Bobby never recorded this as a solo and this live tape is all there is of him singing this song. So treasure it. I have Sam Cooke's cover of this song on 45 RPM also. He covered the song in 1960. The original was sung and recorded in 1955 for the movie Unchained by Todd Duncan. Elvis covered the song in 1977.

In this version, of Unchained Melody, Bobby Hatfieds hits the last few notes on a much higher register. He did NOT do those notes in "Ghost," nor in the original recording. I believe those last great notes were for his mother, who was in the audience. That little bite of his lower lip is the "Tell!" No one before or since gives this song such heart. It never fails to breathe life into those who listen.

Bobby had a four octave range singing from tenor to counter-tenor. No falsetto! That was in his normal range! This was live on the Andy Williams show with his mom and dad in the audience never having heard him perform live before. He had a cold and was worried about hitting that last top note. Nailed it! This song has been covered by many but it's so incredibly hard to sing. That decresendo was magnificent was well as the close (and all the way through as well). Bobby owns this song now in the same way that Johnny Cash owns Hurt (originally by Nine Inch Nails). The guy who wrote Hurt originally said in an interview "that's not my song anymore" because Johnny sang it so well from the heart. That would be another one to cover.

You may have heard part of the song in the film, 'Ghost.' Each of the Brothers also did solo songs on their albums. This performance was on the weekly 'Andy Williams Show'. There is video on KZfaq of the three discussing the 'how' of Bobby getting to sing this song. Brother Bill is very funny. Bobby has a counter-tenor voice. Bill has a bass-baritone voice. Also, after this song the three of them sing, 'What I'd say,' which shows how funny and fabulous they were. It's also on YT. My favourite from the Righteous Brothers is, 'Soul And Inspiration', for me a beautiful, heart-touching song. I've loved them for 57 years. Greetings from Australia.

They were also known as the Blue Eyed Soul Bros because they sang from their hearts and souls every performance. Bobby had the tenor voice and Bill Medley was the baritone voice they shouldn't have blended together but they did and it was pure magic. LISTEN TO OTHER MUSIC BY THEM. IT was in the movie Ghost. Apologies if someone else had said this: The song was from a 1955 movie called "Chained" about a chain gang prison. It was sung by a black opera singer named Todd Duncan (one of the prisoners) - it's on KZfaq. The song won an Academy Award in 1955. For the 1955 versions, check out Roy Hamilton and Sam Cooke (on KZfaq). But this version was the one that really took off. Bobby was the one that started singing "I need your love" up an octave, which subsequent singers emulated less successfully IMO.

Unchained Melody probably sounds familiar to you because many people who are auditioning for American Idol or America's Got Talent sing this in their audition. Sadly, not many of them even begin to do it justice. It also may sound familiar because it was played during one of the scenes in the movie "Ghost" that starred Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" and "Unchained Melody" were both released in 1965. That was a time when color TV was brand new and some shows were in color and some were still in black and white. You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling was filmed in black and white but Unchained Melody was in color. Because color was so new, producers of TV shows that were going to be broadcast in color wanted some bright color that would really stand out in this "new" format. I think that accounts for the pink suit Bobby is wearing. Also, because color was so new, makeup artists might not have quite figured out how to make entertainers look life-like and that may account for how orange Bobby looks. This of course was long before autotune and it was live so there was no tweaking done by engineers on a sound board back in the studio. It was purely TALENT, and lots and lots of practice.

You've Lost that Lovin'Feelin is their biggest hit that they sang together. It was the most played song on radio and television in the 20th century! The Righteous Brothers definitely should have been ranked in the top five ( if not number one) on the greatest duos of all time! Listen to 'Lovin Feelin' and Soul and Inspiration and You'll Never Walk Alone. They sang many great ones. They sang one solo apiece on their albums. Between their contrasting voices, the range they had, their versatility and the magical blending of those two monster voices. I think you might agree that being number 16 on that list is too low!
