This was sung LIVE in 1965 .. no auto-tune, no naked dancers, no smoke or mirrors ... just pure raw talent and blue-eyed soul ... Bobby had an amazing range of 4+ octaves and could reach high notes that even some sopranos could not reach! Also, Bobby sang this while suffering from a head cold, and the high note he hit at the end was full voice, NOT FALSETTO! To find out how they got their name, watch this full performance in the Andy Williams Show .. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o5Z1ddZn2rjLpKs.html ... enjoy! Righteous Brothers are two guys who are not actually brothers, they are a duo. But this is a solo song so they flipped a coin to see who would sing it .. this is Bobby Hatfield, and the other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for this performance .. and he did so well with that, building up the music to the passionate end, so credit to Bill Medley too .. I also read that Bill Medley played the piano in the background for the studio version of this song. This performance was done live, (with no auto-tune or other devices used by today’s musicians) and was better than the recorded studio version. Bobby suffered from stage fright and was particularly nervous in this performance because his parents were in the audience... you can see him bite his lip then grin at the end because he knew he nailed it!

Suffering from an upper respiratory infection that left him short of breath, Bobby also had to deal with a severe case of stage fright; before every show he would lose his lunch, sometimes rather violently. As if he didn't already have enough to deal with, his mother was in the audience watching her 25-year-old son performing live for the very first time and he was terribly concerned about disappointing her. I think it's safe to say the he did not disappoint his mom, anyone in the audience or the 70,000,000 folks out in TV land with his late October treat. Someone once said that young Mr. Hatfield's song was responsible for an 8% increase in the number of births in July of '66. Another person stated that, after the applause died down, you could hear the sound of dozens and dozens of damp panties hitting the floor.

I bet Bobby's singing coach said to him (when he did a final version of the song) 'If you sing like this, in front of an audience - I guarantee you, they will be raving about it for years', and he was right. Here we are, 57 years later (2022) , and it is still, by far, the best version, ever sung. A lot of the reactions we've seen (on youtube), of people watching it for the first time, have been from people, simply giving their opinions about it - but if you want a real professional, giving his take on it, then go to kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mNWInqRqrJu0fGg.html called 'British guitarist analyses the Righteous Brothers live in 1965'. He will even give you the musical notes Bobby sang (20 of them), when he performed his stunning rendition of it - no auto-tune required!

Very good comments ! Bobby’s upright posture, bold choice of clothes, diamond studded ring on his pinky, suave demeanor etc exude confidence and masculinity. His flights into the stratosphere stun everyone, but it’s his low notes that make my tummy wobble ( ‘godspeed your love’ ). The chest resonance makes these notes sound so soulful, so meaningful. Stunning and classy. Also, note how he uses the musical flow to create a mix of pure vocalization (yodeling on the vowels) and conversational storytelling. His subtle emphasis on consonants (b, d, g, etc) makes the words perfectly clear. He takes us on an amazing journey.

This is Bobby Hatfield [tenor] on a live performance on the "Andy Williams Show" along with his singing partner, Bill Medley [baritone]. Many get confused on this song as there is only one singer. They just can't see a baritone, Bill, even come close to pulling this song off. But there was a total great segment with Andy Williams, who also was a great singer. The three of them laughed a bit and did a jovial "Baby Whatcha Want." That cute smile and biting his lip and nodding? He was nodding to his mom who was in attendance on William's show. And that was Andy William's orchestra. Hard to believe pulling off a live performance like this today. If you really want to know why they are called "Blue Eyed Soul" react to "I Just Want to Make Love to You" which is sung mainly by Medley. To my ear it's jazz and soul.

You can feel his voice in your soul. What a loss, Bobby apparently died in his sleep, hours before a scheduled Righteous Brothers concert. In January 2004, a toxicology report concluded that cocaine use had precipitated a fatal heart attack. The initial autopsy found that Hatfield had advanced coronary disease. RIP Bobby.

What a great reaction to a great song and singer. The song was written for a movie in 1948 called unchained. It was a story of a prisoner on a chain gang imploring his wife girlfriend to wait for him many have covered This song but none ever beat this version

A lot of us grannies lost our virtue in the back seat of our boyfriends car and righteous brothers on the radio. I heard that some musician friends called out to the one day after rehearsal and said “that was righteous, brothers” and so the name according to legend ☮️🤘🏽🔥👵🏼

Genre: "Blue-Eyed Soul"! LIve TV broadcast of Bobby Hatfield's interpretation. Original song written in 1955 for prison movie titled "Unchained." Lyrics are an inmate's worries, longings, hopes, feelings, doubts about his woman -- will she wait, over the course of time, for him to come home to her loving arms. You may have heard this in the movie "Ghost." A classic for sure!
