I love how energetic and extreme Sonic's jog is, his torso nearly turns 90 degrees for each stride as his limbs are about 180 degrees opposite. His quills flowing back slightly in his full sprint animation is cool too.

Hands down the single greatest iteration of the half-pipe special stage. Visually striking, engaging without being too hard, dope music and an overall very unique style and look.

Even if it is the Sonic 2 half-pipe everyone and their grandmother is sick of seeing, I have to say this is probably the best take on it; the draw distance makes it easy to tell whether you're collecting the rings, there's a whole bunch of stuff happening to keep your mind active, and also, the music for these Special Stages is only beaten out by Sonic Mania and Sonic CD (Japanese) in my opinion.
@KenShackler3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! These special stages are some of the best Sonic gameplay ever. It's super underrated. There's so much going on. You're running uphill and downhill and avoiding spikeballs and collecting rings and running through boost machines and jumping here and there. Most of all I love the sense of gravity in these stages. I don't think ANY other Sonic game has ever captured the sense of gravity as well. The way you gain so much speed when you're running downhill feels so satisfying and exciting. The contrast between running slowly uphill and running super fast downhill is something that's missing in most 3D Sonic games. But that kind of contrast is important if you want to make satisfying gameplay. These special stages nail the spirit of Sonic so well. And the music rocks too.

@@TheGoldNShadow An interesting take, I believe they were used in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Colors DS (albeit repurposed), Sonic Lost World 3DS (ugh...), and in Sonic Mania. If I may ask, what makes you sick of Blue Sphere despite only being used twice?

Did you know, the special stages were made in only two months thanks to the game using sonic x-treme assets.
@Ronan347534 жыл бұрын
But wasn't it made by Sonic Team and running on their engine for NiGHTS and the Saturn prototype for Sonic Adventure?
@zapitnow50714 жыл бұрын
Ronyplay there was a sonic xtreme engine after the night’s engine. Basically, after the team lost the night’s engine, they had one last attempt to finish x treme and they failed. I think the team started working on the Saturn prototype not long after 3dblast
@Ronan347534 жыл бұрын
@@zapitnow5071 I've heard. Either way this special stage seems to be using the 3D character models provided by Sonic Team's artists. And some of the assets seen in this special stage were re-used in Sonic Adventure (like the starry skybox made it into Twinkle Park). And I found out the programmer of the Sonic Adventure games worked on the Saturn's Special Stages. segaretro.org/Tetsu_Katano But who knows, you could be right about some assets being used from Xtreme.

SEGA could have probably made this a pretty neat game. Give sonic a accelerate button and a jump. The player could be able to jump between multiple lanes or half pipes, like different paths. The end of a level could be a big ring. The bosses could be a 2.5D experience. The story would be your basic 90s sonic plot, but SEGA just had to port 3D blast. At least that's what I wish had happened.

@papermarioparty08 Жыл бұрын
Apparently, it's actually the PC version of Sonic R that gets ported. Though Sonic 3D Blast did get a PC port in 1997, it's a downgraded version of the Saturn version that has a different halfpipe stage which looks like a 13 year old's attempt at making Flash game.

I feel like the bombs should’ve deducted 10 rings from your ring count instead of it just being 5. These special look pretty easy because of the 5 ring damage. That said, these special stages are my absolute favourite in the Sonic series!

To be fair, this is only the first time they repeat these Special Stages in particular. Of course, they’d do it 4 more times after 3D Blast (Saturn), but at least this version does it better by enhancing it with better controls, music, and visuals since I can actually tell whether I’m collecting rings or not. Only Half-Pipe that comes close is the one from Sonic Rush where using the stylus allows for ultra-precise movement and the music is quite funky, though I prefer 3D Blast’s tune.

@papermarioparty08 Жыл бұрын
I don't get why everyone's still obsessed with graphics. It made sense in the 90s and 2000s, when graphics were still evolving but now every single game graphical looks the same. The biggest thing that makes game graphics distinctive is the art style, not whether the game has better lighting or has raytracing or whatever idk.

@@papermarioparty08 it’s honestly sad because even unique art styles are being phased out in favour for overemphasis on photorealism. That’s just the demand unfortunately, I’ve seen that a lot with the new Need for Speed title

and I will say unfortunately games like fortnite have sadly made people develop a stigma that games that utilise a cartoony or cel shaded aesthetic (more so the former) are inherently bad. Not that it’s the game’s fault it’s just the majority of people have jumped on the bandwagon of “fortnite is bad and every cartoony game looks like it and therefore it’s bad too”. Which honestly sucks because yeah fortnite isn’t my cup of tea gameplay wise but it has such a unique art style
