Fun fact Metal Sonic (bossfight) wasn't supposed to be in the game. They reskinned the infinite fight to get an extra level.

Fun fact! This game legitimately only had 3 level designers, only one of which ever worked on a Sonic Game before! (Lost World) Yea...I’ll let you sit and think about that...

One year later im still bitterly disappointed with sega and sonic team for failing there mascot the way they did in this game.

I genuinely, whole-heartedly despise this game? I would go on for ages, but to be honest the only way I'd do my thoughts justice is by making my own review that'd be way too long for its own good. It's all kinds of wrong and takes the worst parts of Generations, Colours and Lost World to make a strong contender for the worst game I've ever played.

Well, might as well repost my review of Sonic Forces here. I truly forget how much I hate this game. Sonic Forces (in my opinion) is bad because of numerous reasons. These reasons being: -Terrible level design -Terrible physics -Short length -Mediocre writing -Constant nostalgia pandering -and FALSE ADVERTISING Level Design: Most (if not all) of the stages are just straight hallways where all you need to do is hold forward, or literally hold the boost button (latter applies to Modern Sonic only). A perfect example of this is Luminous Forest. You can literally beat the level with only one button. Not to mention that you can beat them within 1-2 minutes. Unleashed and Gens had great level design and length, so there should be no excuses for their terrible level design. Physics: It's not just Classic Sonic who has bad physics, but it's ALL THREE OF THEM. Modern Sonic feels unnatural, especially compared to the previous boost games. He speeds up too fast, and is hard to move left and right. The custom character (CC) is similar to Sonic, except worse. The CC speeds up even faster when they touch the ground, and is even harder to control, leading to unnecessary deaths while platforming. A great example of this is Guardian Rock, when trying to jump over small gaps. It's really easy to fall there because of the terrible physics. I haven't even touched the worst one...CLASSIC SONIC. Oh boy, does this character fall flat on his face. His physics aren't just off...they're TERRIBLE. Running down a hill in Chemical Plant? No momentum. Rolling over a pit in Luminous Forest? Fall down straight like a rock. Even when compared to Generations, the physics aren't good at all. Short Length: The game only has 30 stages. That doesn't sound bad, right? But remember how I said that the levels can be finished in 1-2 minutes? Well, multiply 1.5 by 30, and you only get 45 minutes of gameplay in total. When you add the 1 hr 27 min of cutscenes, you get roughly 2 hr 12 min of the campaign. 2 HOURS FOR A 40$ GAME. When you compare that to literally any other game released in 2017, the numbers are laughable in comparison. Mediocre Writing: It's not as bad as the likes of Colors and Lost World, but it's not really good. Infinite's backstory is just "I'M NOT WEAK AAAAA", and the dialogue just feels bland. The tone is all over the place. First, it's "this is why it's called war" and "Tails has just lost it", but the it turns into "the power of fwendship". It isn't as terrible as BALDY NOSEHAIR, but saying that it's "not as terrible" should show a sign that it's not good. Nothing really exciting happens. Nostalgia Pandering: We're getting to my favorite part. This is what held the game back from being good. Bringing back Classic Sonic, Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and the Wisps were not a good idea. They tried to do what Generations did before, but ended up failing. It's almost as if the game was built around nostalgia pandering, and that substance was secondary. They neglected any Adventure Era fans, except for the big middle finger towards them, in the form of false advertising. Which leads me to my next point... False Advertising: This is just unforgivable. They used Chaos as a marketing ploy to draw in Adventure Era fans, but didn't give him enough screen time to justify the marketing point. He wasn't even relevant to the game. They put him in the E3 trailer, and put him in Sonic Forces Speed Battle, and they even put him in the Forces comics, but he's barely in the game for more than a minute. These are the reasons I give Sonic Forces a 3/10. It's irredeemable in every aspect. This game is complete garbage and is not worth 40 dollars. I'd even say that it's worse than 06.

The only thing that I liked about Sonic Forces is that it lead to the IDW Sonic comics, which has a better plot than Sonic Forces'.

Honestly Sega should have kept this game in development the physics were all over the place. For classic sonic there was no momentum from him he felt stiff. And with modern sonic if you were going to fast and tried to slow down to make a turn it's really hard to and I would just end up falling off the map for going to fast. Why add chaos if we never fight him we fight all of the other bosses but not chaos. It's like they forgot about him.

Man, this game.................this game was gut-punching disappointing for me. Ever since the first trailer, I had hope that this game would be very good. After seeing all the gameplay footage and other trailers I saw for this game, I continued to have hope that this game would be at least good. But looking back, I was more excited for the potential rather than what was shown in the trailers. It has been a long time since a game disappointed me soo much. Sooooo much stuff WASTED in this game. The level design was bland, the controls are weird, the difficulty was REALLY easy etc. Even the story wasn't anything special and was a mess in s couple places. Forces kinda taught me a lesson though. I taught me that Sonic Team/SEGA(at this moment) are clueless, lazy, and bad at making proper decisions. If Sonic Team announces a new Sonic game again, I am not getting my hopes up. My faith in them has extinguished.

It's hard to believe that it has been one year already. I feel like fans make the songs in sonic forces actually good if I'm being honest.

A beefed up graphics engine won't save shit design and a lack of effort. The opposite of that is the main reason why Unleashed's visuals still hold up incredibly well.

The reason why this "game" came to be is because new developers. The people behind generations/unleashed work for nintendo now. They helped make Super Mario Odyssey. :v)

Why Sonic 06 gets hour long reviews; It's bad, but you really can see the diamond in the rough. Why Sonic Forces gets hour long reviews; I don't understand, the whole thing is BORING, which is worse than bad, it's not even worth your time.

Time flies, I remember when this game wasn't out yet and there was non-stop conflict between the Forces Defense Squad and the Anti-Forces Squad over how the game would turn out. I swear, I hated this game (and still do) since it first came out. It's done so many things wrong for me as a Sonic game and has design choices I find repulsive. It mostly has to do with the gameplay whereas the characters have messed up acceleration and their control is extremely stiff, they control like a tank which is unacceptable for a platformer. Those two things ruin the game for me. That's not even getting into my hatred towards the inconsistent and lackluster story, Infinite's weak and pathetic character backstory, Classic Sonic's pointless inclusion, the other characters (other than Shadow) being unplayable and also useless compared to Sonic and the Avatar, etc...I can go on and on. That's how much this game disappointed me. I'm anxious to see what Sonic Team has in store for the future, other than Team Sonic Racing and that live-action movie.

There was so much they could have done with this game in my opinion. They could have taken us through the entire torn up world like seeing all the countries from Sonic Unleashed! What about all of the resistance? Why not get to play as all those characters, like Tails? Or Knuckles? Hell, what about Team Chaotix? This game was disappointing.

Edit: outdated opinions and attitudes I wouldn’t say Sonic Forces is bad. And by bad, I mean godawful. Here’s my opinion: At best, it’s good. I had a lot of fun with the Modern Sonic/Avatar stages. Well. While they lasted, of course. I dislike how they changed the physics and how they removed the drift though. And most of the music was fine imo. Sure, it’s very pop and rock, but I enjoyed tunes like Park Avenue. But tunes like Classic Green Hill... ugh... At worst, I think it’s mediocre. Like, okay, but in a bad way. Classic Sonic was not fun to play as in any way shape or form. You have literally no spin in the air, making him control terribly. I swear to God he controls like an Elephant with balloons stuffed inside. Other than that, it was just disappointing. I had high hopes for this game, I thought it could be like, another Sonic Generations, but no, it’s just one hour of pure... ‘eh’. Is it better than Unleashed? By God, no way. Sonic Unleashed is not only my favourite Sonic game, but my favourite game of ALL TIME. I’m dead serious. Sonic controls better, the Werehog was great imo, and the music was more varied. Speaking of which, that game NEEDS to be ported to 8th gen consoles. The HD version of course, not the Wii/PS2 version, which is inferior in every way. Is it better than Colors? (Which in my opinion, is the second weakest game in the boost quadrilogy) Only graphically. Otherwise, no. They took the blocky 2D from that game, shoehorned it in, and made it worse. I’m not gonna be harsh on this game, but all in all, Sonic Forces is incredibly mediocre. But this is what I bought so I’m just gonna enjoy what I can. Overall, I’m ambivalent towards this game. I’d rate this game a 5/10. It’s a game, but it’s just not solid enough. (In my perspective)

12:43 Lmao they didn't even animate Sonic's falling animations. Edit: I recently remembered that sonic does have a falling animation, which made that part of the video a minor glitch.

i'll give a shit about a story in sonic when they fire the current ENGLISH translators... the script in Japanese was way darker, barely had any jokes from sonic, and tails isn't as cringe-y and actually made me appreciate the effort of the story at least

Honest to God I honestly don’t see Sonic as a good icon anymore, he’s just going to lose potential if he’s still with Sonic team, I mean take a look at Smash Ultimate and Wreck It Ralph 2, Sonic is only a character and a small cameo, but Nintendo and Disney seem to do a better job than Sega could ever do. In your Lost World review you said Sonic should’ve been owned by Nintendo, and I couldn’t agree anymore. The only good game to come out Sonic Team had to be Unleashed, which even 9 years later still holds up as a solid game.

Personally, The game is mediocre. It does some things right & did so many things wrong. It's not the greatest Sonic game in the world nor the worse. Forces is kinda just there. It has potential to be amazing but didn't take on it because incompetent development. All I can say, Infinite & the music was the best part of the game & I hope Infinite returns. Yeah this game is a 5/10 for me. Will Unleashed ever be toped? What will Sonic Team do after Team Sonic Racing? Will time constraints stop killing Sonic Team? No beating around the bush. Looking back at it after one year, Sonic Forces is just a bad game there's no way around it. This game proves how lost Sega and Sonic Team really are. With both this game and the fact that Shadow is an assist trophy once again in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, there's really no hope for the Sonic franchise. I brought up Shadow being deconfirmed as playable in Smash because that was the final nail in the coffin for me.

The reason why the levels are so short in sonic forces is because the Japanese people wanted shorter levels, it’s probably hard for sega to please both sides, I’ve seen this point made in a different video and it’s been made much better and clearer than I’m making it right now, but short levels were designed because the Japanese wanted that and that’s all I have to say

The worst thing about this game is it was released the year of Sonic Mania. Even if it was good Mania would render it moot. Mania is fantastic. Forces is mediocre.

Fist Bump really grew on me as time went on. I think it's the only thing I like about the game (and some of the ost).

The fact that Classic sonic is here still enrages me. I sorta get that they wanted to follow the success of Generations, since it got good reviews unlike Unleashed which had 1 amazing half and 1 bashed half. Generations had a reason for classic sonic; the whole thing is an ANNIVERSARY game, no shit it's gonna be made to appeal to nostalgia. After that success, the brain-dead developers think they had to include classic sonic in their next big game even though it didn't even make sense

I really like the old reviews, they might be long but, they're damn great. You can do multiparts for what you do next, it's your own choice but, the old ones needs to stay there.

One thing I will praise the game for is it’s level backgrounds and boss designs, the giant worm in the first level, those infinite creatures and egg robots are all really well designed for a background effect. And even if some of the bosses aren’t well integrated into gameplay they still look great, especially eggman’s final boss in its many forms, seriously when I saw eggman’s smaller robot ripped out of the larger bot’s chest my jaw dropped. I don’t like that giant snake bit tho, like seriously what even happened there? Oh and the memes that came from this game, those where great,. *toGETHER*

Why is it so satisfying to hear you be so evil to this game

I don't like the voice actors, the gameplay is dull, levels are too short for how many there are, cut scenes look cheap while those text boxes after missions look plain lazy, and the phantom ruby and Infinite are never really explained. Seriously, the cut scene with Shadow makes it seem Infinite was normal and given power by Eggman, yet they say he was built. The phantom ruby is even worse. Mania makes it seem the ruby was just found yet Eggman has "prototypes". Also, they say the ruby needs power completely randomly, the rules for what the ruby can do seem to change randomly (they are an illusion but you can be hurt by them, it can also make Infinite very fast, they can open rifts, teleport, allow flight, open null space (which Eggman straight up says he doesn't know why it can), etc), and for some reason a prototype is just as powerful as the real deal.

A year already? Huh... Time sure does fly, eh?

How I see Forces Gameplay= Diet Colors Visuals= Diet Generations Story= Diet Adventure I get the feeling that the Unleashed team are working on a bigger project, while the Colors/Lost world team churned out this budget title for a quick buck on next gen consoles, I pray that's the case

They didnt make the hedgehog engine 2 as a better version of the first one. Actually the guy who made the hedgehog engine left Sega and went to square-enix years ago, so i think they can't use the original anymore. Most of the talented level designers who worked in unleashed now work at nintendo. If you felt MK8 tracks or Mario oddysey worlds were kinda sonic unleashed-ish well look up the credits of those games

Sega haves all the tools to make a great sonic game, just make a sonic game with a decent story, modern fucking sonic only, add the awesome fast pace gameplay of unleashed, and you already have something decent...its not all that hard sega...

I'll say this, we can always have disagreements, but a huge amount of the time I truly like your viewpoint on many things and I still thoroughly enjoy your videos man, great one as always. By the way, we can both agree against the newest cast as a whole(aside from Eggman, I find his performance great as long as he has great material to go off of) is pretty poor, especially the American writing... I would personally like to even see Drummond one day come back even if it was just once, Sega at the very least has tried to always be very friendly with fans and I've always appreciated it, hell their friendliness towards the fan games side of things to take one on as arguably one of the best Classic Sonic games to date, I'd say Sega can definitely have some big wins, you've even highlighted how much we may both find Sonic Unleashed a game undeserving of its bashing and actually one of the best 3D games being phenomenal in many ways, hell it was the last game to incorporate proper physics in 3D! I just wish they could explore something like that again instead of all this.

You should review Sonic Battle at some point too. It is my favorite story in a Sonic game and back in 2017 really gave me a new appreciation for the series again.
