Nobody ever notices or points out the gradual daytime transitions between Zones, I always thought they're quite neat. GHZ - Morning MGZ - Noon or daytime SYZ - Sunset LZ - Takes place indoors but presumably twilight SLZ - Night SBZ - Dawn FZ - Indoors but presumably close to morning, then in the final cutscene Sonic returns to GHZ in the morning just like he started Thus the entire game transpires over the course of one day.

I dont really think marble garden or spring yard look anything like noon/daytime or sunset. I mean maybey just alittle bit, but you could say that's because of how it was the first sonic game. But I still just dont see it. Marble garden has a deep blue to fit the dreary atmosphere and spring yard is purple because, well honestly idk I guess it looks nice? And laberynth zone was moved because of how diffcult the level was not for anything thematic or to be cohesive. So I doubt any sort of daylight cycle or anything like it was what they were going for.

Trivia: Sonic Genesis on the GBA was such a trainwreck in part BECAUSE Sega already had a successful trilogy on the handheld! What you're seeing there is Sonic 1 assets crowbared into the Sonic Advance engine. Not only was SA supposed to use assets of a completely different scale, but it was also carefully optimized to make the most of the GBA's processing power. Putting in too-large assets, loading whole levels at once, and using completely the wrong physics results in the hot mess that is Sonic Genesis.

It's important to remember, when replaying Sonic 1, that the game was never "all about speed", but they realized, when making it, that "going fast" was the most fun part of the game, so they made that it's main selling point

In fact, Yuji Naka has said in an interview that the main inspiration for Sonic (1) was the fact that you always had to replay the first level in Super Mario Bros. Because half (if not more) of the stage design refinement efforts were focused on just GHZ so of course the most polished stage would be the most memorable. First impressions matter so this logic is understandable, it then became a long running tradition for Sonic Team to make the first stage or area in all of their games absolutely stunning and much more appealing than the rest. Even in Phantasy Star Online the first Forest map is so good I've spent more time on it than on any other zones, skipping some of them straight back to Forest on higher difficulty.

@@Diwasho tbh my comment was mostly a joke but I do feel that many games manage to have a polished and quality opening stage without it overshadowing the rest of the game. Tho the only other instance I can think of a game's initial act being its best is Super Mario 64, where the castle overworld and the early levels (esp Bobomb Battlefield) feel much more intelligently designed and cohesive than the sloppy and experimental later levels like Tick Tock Clock and Wing Mario over the Rainbow

I honestly find the Genesis Sonic games to be generally very forgiving platformers, thanks to the rings. Sure, you might smack right into a Badnik or something if you haven't gotten the level down pat, but most of the time you just waste a few seconds and your rings. Not exactly a big setback. Though the spike bug in 1 doesn't exactly help. It's a biiiit of a different story if you're going for all the Chaos Emeralds/Time Stones (unless it's Sonic 3, where you just need to explore), but if you're going for that then you're probably already pretty good at the game and have at least some idea of where the hazards are. As for Sonic's physics, I find there's a learning curve to them, and it's not that big of an issue once you've played with him for a while. The Spindash in later games helps though.

While a valiant reason, a video I saw pointed out that they already had a solution for this in Green Hill Zone. As easy as it is, GHZ still teaches to new players that they need to take their time every so often until they get the hang of things. I find Marble Zone to be more valuable as a way of forcing the player to understand how Sonic's jumping physics work. Labyrinth Zone though is just plain bad, every single water Zone after it would do the idea much better.

Here's one small thing to mention that I feel doesn't get mentioned often. There's a very special pattern to the stages that is worth mentioning, the game seem to alternate between two types of levels, which are fast levels where you are more able to take advantage of Sonic's speed like Green Hill Zone and Starlight Zone. Meanwhile between them, you got slower stages like Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone who, seems to follow the philosophy of other games and even movies where you put breaks between the action as to not exhaust the viewers, or in this case the player with constant action. Though with how much peoples enjoy the more fast-paced stages in this game... it kinda ended up having an opposite effect, where the slower stages ending up being the more stressful stages. In summary, Sonic 1 definitely was aiming to be a very traditional platformer with a taste of high speed to give itself an identity. And the feedback from this game resulted in Sonic 2 having all stages be all fast-paced ones, as they were the stages that peoples enjoyed the most. It was still a rather humble start in the end, whereas all the other games in the series would crank up the speed ten fold. Personally I would love to see another game where the premise isn't only about "going fast", but rather "using speed to complete another objective". But that's just me speaking.

Fun Fact: The 7th emerald was only added for 2 because Yuji Naka liked the Super Sayan transformation Goku could attain and wanted something similar for sonic as a super mode, and since they had the emerald mcguffins, they simply added a 7th in the second game (to mirror the dragon balls). This was then incorporated into the lore that, South Island, the island where sonic 2 takes place and where Tails lives, is where the 7th emerald was hidden away from the other 6.

Speed was a core concept of the game since they landed on Sonic as the protagonist, though the way the designers describe the game makes it sound more like they focused on speed as a reward for skill rather than speed for speed's sake. I spoke more about this in another comment chain, but the game was made in an era where replayability was much more important, and this factored into why the game was designed the way it was.

It should be noted how most of the game is a symptom of how the devs wanted Sonic games to follow a specific formula: Fast levels with optional platforming combined with slow levels with optional speedrunning. Sonic 1 does an awesoms job of showcasing the former, which explains why Sonic 2 focuses so much on it, but the latter isn't well executed. That said, Sonic 3 marks a return to form that brought back the slower platforming and exploration of Sonic 1, except done well.

I actually like Marble Zone and Labyrinth quite a lot. People mostly just point towards Green Hill and maybe Star Light Zones as the good stages and while they are the best stages in the game, I appreciate the platforming elements and change of pace that Marble & Labyrinth offer. The spin dash and drop dash do improve the game overall despite the levels not being designed with those abilites in mind but even without these abilities, I don't mind the platforming sections in Marble Zone or the underwater sections of Labyrinth In Marble Zone, All but 1 of the lava sections can be skipped if you know what you're doing and there are parts where you can go pretty fast in the level, again if you know what you're doing. The crushers don't really bother me in this stage because if you're fast enough at the beginning of a zone, you can get past the first crusher before having to wait and then get past the rest of the crushers quickly. And the boss is actually pretty fun, trying to get as many hits in on Robotnik before he flies over to the other side of the screen, and like the Star Light boss, uses the lava mechanics of the stage in the boss fight Labyrinth Zone is honestly not a bad level imo. Sonic 2 imo has much more annoying underwater sections and zones 1 & 3 of Labyrinth have shortcuts that drastically reduce the length of the stage, like Scrap Brain Act 3. Like Marble, there are also some sections that allow for speed. There are the waterslide sections which, while automated, do give a bit of spectacular to a mostly slow paced stage. But the final section before the boss fight is a speed platforming section, trying to jump up as fast as you can to the end of the level Spring Yard Zone is a weak point for me because it tries to be both a faster Green Hill/Star Light type stage while also having some of the platforming based sections of Marble, except worse. Those slow moving block sections which are required for at least 2-3 parts of the entire zone are worse than any of the platforming in Marble, Labyrinth or the other zones because you can't do anything other than wait in these sections. Arriving sooner doesn't reduce the amount of time spent waiting at all and there's essentially no way of trying to go faster here without getting crushed, unlike with the crusher sections in Marble Scrap Brain Yard sort of falls into a similar category as Spring Yard Zone, has a lot of straight or downhill slopes where you can run and pick up speed but then puts a lot of obstacles and enemies neccessitating you to either slow down or risk your coins or your lives for speed. It makes sense to end this game which alternates between momentum-based speed level and platforming-based stages but I can't say this is a favourite of mine to replay. It is pretty much painless with the spin dash and drop dash but at the same time, it sort of removes the difficulty that this stage is supposed to offer

It don't matter what you cover I always love it. Pikasprey always worth the wait 😁. I always felt like the first sonic had the biggest problem with speed. Cause it forces you to slow down more than any other sonic game. But I have some nostalgia for it cause it was my first sega game.

Its so cool that you bring this up, I'm a Sega fan over Nintendo but I have to agree that Sonic never made Mario sweat (other than at the Olympics in distance running) every Sonic game I ever played I found that there was something more they could have added, either something major or something minor but there was always something that could obviously have been added. Sega wanted to beat Nintendo so bad yet they were their own worst enemy in so many ways during the 4th and 5th generation of consoles. But the little blue blur will always go fast 💙

I love this because you look critically Sonic 1 in a way I can't because was one of my first video games and I am used to everything. I can understand how jarring the speed of the Marble Zone and beyond vs. what was advertised can be. Sega try to fix that by making the opening four zones of Sonic full of speed of loops.

I wish Sega would milk zones from the lesser known games like Neo Green Hill, Bridge zone, Mecha Green Hill, etc. Also a cheat in the iOS version can give you the elemental shields.

Something funny about this game is that originally, Labyrinth zone was supposed to be the second level of the game, but they feared it would be too difficult for being so early in the game, so they swapped it with the easier Marble Garden. So both the 2 slowest levels in the game were in contention for level 2

Thanks for reviewing this game, Pikasprey. I've never played through Sonic 1 in full, I too just sort of lost interest/gave up in Marble Garden. It's been nice watching your take on it! I just wanted to say, on an unrelated note, I was writing a script for a video I needed to record in class, and when I read over it, there were some sentences that seemed... not quite me? Upon reading them out loud, I realised they were like how you phrase your words and I ended up reading them that way too. Hehe! Influential, amirite? Thanks again for another awesome video! I hope you review Sonic Rush sometime!

Honestly when I was a kid I didn't know any better or think about things like game design. I approached Marble Zone with the mentality of "well this is the game, I'm going to beat it" I beat all the classic Sonic games from start to finish and got everything, even got all the chaos emeralds in Sonic 1

Some of this bad design in stages was fixed or remaded in sequels. Labyrinth zone is bad water level - Hydrocity zone in Sonic 3 is good and fluid(ha ha) water level Marble zone - Marble Garden Zone from Sonic 3 Scrap Brain - Metropolis from Sonic 2 Casino - Casino from Sonic 2

Labyrinth Zone was originally going to be the second zone. American localization team decided it was too much of a difficulty spike and shoved it further down. Ideally, the level configuration would be Green Hill, Spring Yard, Starlight, and Scrap Brain, maybe with another act or two per zone, and Marble/Labyrinth as optional unlocked bonus levels (or more ideally, simply revamped into levels that would actually be fun to play with Sonic's movement options)
