I like psg drum, listen to super hydlide which uses a psg snare but m using all 3 psg channels to create a way better sound (oh and also using a driver thats not gems also helps make the song sound better 😂)

It does, but from my knowledge some games that used GEMS would reserve PSG for sound effects.

GEMS has access to PSG, and games use it quite frequently, usually just as blaring static notes. Noise was used as a snare in earlier games as showcased here (even if this isn't actually GEMS itself). GEMS was pretty fancy with the features it supported. It supported the special features of FM channel 3 to a certain extent, double buffered PCM (so no garbled samples, although because of that it only maxed out at around 10Khz), and later versions of it supported software mixed PCM, 2 channel mixing iirc.

@@dm1i That's assuming you'd know how to properly code and use a sound driver. But GEMS allowed pure musicians to be able to create music for the Mega Drive - before that, the technical barrier would have prevented them to do anything at all. There's a lot of horror stories out there from composers having a hard time even bringing any sound out of the console, in the pre-GEMS era - trying to get intel and bits of code from one another, sending themselves mails with floppy disks across oceans... A sound driver is only what you can make of it. If you can't use it, or if you don't even have access to it because it doesn't exist yet, it's as good as nothing. GEMS is a good reminder of that uncertain era.
