And by all accounts both Sonic The Hedgehog and Pikachu should technically not work in a live action movie. But surprisingly, Sonic and Pikachu both DO work very well in a live action format. But as always, the question is, which one of them has the superior movie?

@KJ Beast Super Mario with a good budget and producers,directors,etc. could totally work in a live action and after seeing Sonic and Pokémon in live action i 100% sure of it i never in my life dreamed of seeing Pokémon or Sonic live actions movies being so good i almost fainted of joy holy shit...

The director of Sonic does want to expand the movie's world, so it is possible that we might explore more of Sonic's world as well as other worlds that were shown on Sonic's map.

He actually did want to include the chaos emeralds,but the fact that this will leave new fans with the only choice of playing 6 games to have a chance to know the relation between the human and sonic world

Yea, but even if they expand the world building in the sequel(s), this movie would still have the exact same problem. I would rather have them go all out with the world building and sonic references than play it safe and sound only drip feed us a few references and the possibility of a sequel.

I didn’t grow up with Pokémon, so I just kind of naturally liked Sonic more. Plus, obviously, Jim Carrey makes the whole movie better!

To address 2 things about your SONIC Conclusion: -In a recent Interview with one of the writers of the movie, they said that the Green Hill citizens had an even bigger part in the final battle at the end, but they cut it down a bit so it’s more Sonic’s time to shine. -Also, the Olive Garden joke, was NOT actually product placement. Olive Garden didn’t pay them for that. The Writers just thought it was a funny joke to throw in at the end, they eventually added on to it later as sort of a running gag.

Yeah it was forced to have Detective Pikachu run away for what he thought he did and Tim doesn't even care so what's the point of Pikachu/Tim's father to run away, Sonic on the other hand argued with Tom because he doesn't want him to abandon greenhill and leave the people without a good officer Overall Sonic The Hedgehog Movie was fun to watch when I saw in theaters, Detective Pikachu was meh and I was a bit disappointed with that film but the pokemon did look good in live action

And I’m sad to say that they did not really fit with the style of videos that I make. I want them to make a Yu-gi-oh live action movie. That would be great. I grew up more with Digimon then Pokemon, but I did see the Pokemon movie with Mewtwo in it; all those evil versions of different Pokemon was pretty neat.

That's going to be kind of tricky to do. I'm not sure how the general audience will except things like how the fate of the world tends to lie on a children's card game. Sure fans will know and get stuff like it being a ancient game from Egypt and all but not everyone else. Also the hair. U can't do Yugi without the hair. Anime hair tends to not translate to live action as shown with what happened to Gokus hair in that film I won't say the name of.

It sounds awesome so far. I LOVED The Long Halloween comic and much like The Dark Knight, this new Batman movie seems to be taking inspiration from it. I also trust the Director Matt Reeves. He made the two recent Planet of the Apes movies and his directing and overall visual style seems PERFECT for a character like Batman. So I can't wait to see it. It's just a shame that the movie is gonna take much longer to come out as they only finished 25% of filming.

When I saw this pop up in my notifications, I stopped the KZfaq video I was watching to see this one. I've been waiting SO LONG for this video to come out, and I'd been so eager to hear your thoughts on it! :D Also, with regards to the question you had about how Tails would've looked with the old design: he actually hadn't been designed yet. When Paramount released the first trailer, showing off Sonic's old design, all the footage in that trailer was the only footage where they inputted CGI at the time, insinuating that they didn't create Tails for the end-credits scene yet, which means that he didn't get added in until way after Sonic got his redesign. But if Paramount didn't change Sonic's design, then Tails would've been made with a more disturbing incarnation as well, but thankfully, he wasn't.

You are actually wrong. Tyson Hesse (the guy that made Sonics new movie design) said that there was also a Tails design made and they had to redesign him as well.

I heard from a KZfaq channel who did lots of research into the Sonic movie that Tails' appearance at the end was what they had originally planned from the start, but that they hadn't made the CGI for him yet. If Tails actually DOES have an old design, then I wonder what he would've looked like, too.

Personally, I prefer Pokémon: Detective Pikachu for a few reasons: Better World Building. More Refrences to the Video Games and TV Adaptations. Better Cast (Not Counting the Villain. Jim Carrey is the E.G.G.M.A.N.) Better VFX. Better Action. Better Soundtrack.

Both are good, but Detective Pikachu is just better in almost every way for me. The chemistry between Tim and the Pikachu is really good and the story is a lot more interesting to me.

Yeah it is good. Hell the fact that we got 2 Amazing videogame movies back to back. Detective Pikachu even has a lot of hidden subtleties to it, that can actually make watching it more then once reveal a ton of revelations.

17:30 Uh Eric? The world of pokemon presented in Detective Pikachu IS the fictional world. Edit: Okay, I feel i should clarify so I don't sound like a jackass. I understand what you mean by wanting video game movies to only take place in the their fictional world, basically remove any human or "real" elements, but when it comes to pokemon it'd be kinda difficult to do that since humans always had a major presence since the start. Sure, there are games like pokemon mystery dungeon where it's just the pokemon w/o humans. but still.

Hey I know you mainly just do movies that have recently come out but I just watched Upgrade the other day and thought it would be cool if you did a vs video between Upgrade and Venom. Since they have a lot in common.

Eric Carter, In the Japanese continuity of the sonic franchise, Sonic and co. have always lived with humans on Earth, so it would have been cool to see a re-imagined Earth with fantasy elements to modern cities and the zones from the sonic stages, as well has have humans and mobians (what the American continuities called the anthropomorphs) coexist. It would have made the biker bar scene make more sense, as there would have been mobians in the bar as well, and sonic could be in disguise because the government had him "wanted" because they though he was Shadow the Hedgehog. Just something I wanted to say, Great video!

I wouldn't say it's forced since it suprisingly fits well with his character in the movie. And it was only added because the movie was written like 3 years ago when flossing was still a pretty popular trend.

Wait, am I hearing this right, when you started explaining the beginning of the Sonic Movie you made a little mistake there, Tom and Sonic are not going on a road trip to restore the electricity, Sonic needed Tom’s help because Tom shot Sonic with a tranquillizer dart out of fear and Sonic accidentally dropped his rings in the ring portal that were supposed to take him to the Mushroom World but instead he saw Tom’s shirt with the words San Francisco before he finally passes out due to the dart. Also in the beginning ( Echidna Tribes motives for Sonic’s Powers & Why Long Claw is protecting Sonic ) and end ( Why Tails is searching for Sonic ) of the Sonic Movie along with tidbits of lore in it such as the worlds map that Long Claw gave to Sonic long ago.

Can you do a versus video of Logan and The Dark Knight? Both are amazing films and are normally considered the best superhero movies from each studio. It would be really interesting to see you compare these films and see which one comes out on top.

@KJ Beast he already said to me that if he was going to pin Dark Knight he would do it with something similar. And he said that winter soldier was no where near as good as the dark Knight. So I think Logan will be good.

I'm so glad someone other than me pointed out how unfunny and forced the fart joke in Sonic was. I even begged the director on Twitter not to include any in the sequel. Also, Detective Pikachu DOES take place in a completely fictional world, dude!

The Detective Pikachu film does take place in the Pokémon world from the game/anime. They even reference that Mewtwo escaped from the Kanto region. Ryme City is also the city from the Detective Pikachu game.

Interesting video to say the least. I will say I did find Sonic to be a bit funnier than what you thought, like Tom's wife's sister, I honestly found her to be pretty funny, but then again, that's more so personal preference. Same with the Olive Garden "ad" at the end (which thanks to a recent interview with the screenwriter for the film, I found out wasn't actually an ad at all. Still I enjoyed it. It was simple, but effective) and Olive Garden isn't even around in my part of the country. We don't even have Wendy's but the punchline still worked. Overall I'd say the movies are about equal. Both have strengths and weaknesses in different ways but added all up, I'd give both a 7/10. Nothing spectacular or groundbreaking outside of it's genre I guess, but still good fun movies in their own right.

Dude, you should DEFINITELY watch Bill Nighy in About Time. His performance is great and his character is so nice and heartwarming, you wanna hug the sh*t outta him. Btw, I also enjoyed both movies a lot, but I do believe it was kind of an unfair match. You see, the Pokémon franchise has already had many movies, with some very successful ones, even though they're all animated. Nintendo did pick their movies well after Mario Bros. Sega didn't. They basically said "you wanna make a movie about our beloved franchise? Suuuuure, bring me the money!", thus we had those vomiting inducing things. And even though I believe Sonic is the most iconic of both, you never really had a "bad pikachu game", Sonic on the other hand... :( Also, funny thing about them both being kind of paired on the Smash Bros Ultimate game.

I like Detective Pikachu more, mainly because it doesn't follow the same generic kids trope of "cartoon character is in the real world & gets through wacky hijinks" like in so many live action kids movie like The Smurfs, Yogi Bear, Woody Woodpecker & of course the infamous Alvin & the Chipmunks movies. Though to give the Sonic movie credit, it did handle that trope decently well.

I haven't seen those movies in a VERY long time. So I can't say for sure. From what I remember, when I was a kid I probably would have given Alvin and the Chipmunks a 6/10. I can't remember anything about Hop though so I can't say. It would probably have a lower score seeing as I can't even remember it.

I think the joke with the people at the bar not being able to realize that sonic is actually not a human was a nice call back to the adventures of sonic the hedgehog where sonic would dress up in gimmicky outfits and confuse the villains much like a classic cartoon character, I don’t think it was intended to be taken seriously.

I've only seen both movies ONCE (despite being a huge fan of both Sonic and Pokemon), so while I may need to rewatch both for a more definitive take, my take away was, Sonic was a more fun and generally entertaining movie while Pikachu was a much more engaging and game accurate movie (at least compared to Sonic). Makes sense with the latter being a mystery story
