This is my favorite song from Sonic Youth. It's so textural, rocking and dreamlike. I can almost scrape the old Village off my soul after listening to it. Beautiful.

It's a sad thing that they played it live like just a couple of times and then, well... it disappeared from their repertoire.

@@romelmunoz7957 For some reason, this song sounds VERY similar to Rats! from Rather Ripped. There's at least one particular chord structure that Thurston and Lee are playing when Thurston's singing "It's been a way too long" that makes me bug out for a sec and bring to mind the line "You can let it shine" from Rats! But I think I like Disappearer even more simply by virtue of the fact that this predated that song by 16 years. And that is a real shame that it only got performed a couple of times. Damn!

The way this sticks like the best pop when it’s built on alternate tunings and fuzz is just mesmerizing. The fact that this song just nails it’s nocturnal road trip vibe from the first and blasts off into the stratosphere. Superb. Maybe my all time favourite SY track.

Sonic Youth is great they still making their name todays in the music scene between the youngsters, the most crime was the fall of Syd Barrett while he got his hands on a lot of things that inspired great bands such as Blur and Radiohead to name a few, and also how the Pixies never even known for what they do while they deserved it more, Sonic Youth is more popular than both of them and I think it's a crime.
@sharkfin20334 жыл бұрын
space shakespeare I’m gonna disagree. View wise on this platform, SY gets much less than Pixies alone. Blur got a lot too, and Radiohead was very mainstream and did well.

I played Goo for my 15-year-old. She said they sound like the Strokes. “You’ve got it backwards...”
@saritajoshi17373 жыл бұрын
But strokes don't sound like them. Their main emphasis is vocal melody while that is something not a priority to sonic youth. Sonic youth is noisy, more atmospheric and dark and experimental.

This album changed my life. I'd listened to Daydream Nation some months before and wasn't turned on by it... So, I was ready to give this one a listen and never listen again when it came into my mail as one of the tape of the week auto delivered tapes in my record club... But when the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tracks played, while in my car, heading to college algebra, I was so stunned by the sounds that I literally sat through a red light in an intersection until being forcibly dislodged by several very pissed off drivers, honking behind me. It was literally mesmerizing. This track, as well as Mote, the last song on the 1st side, and the next song on side 2, Mildred Pierce, blew me away completely. I wore the cassette tape out and bought the CD years later. Goo and Dirty remain two pristine pearls of audiophilia that stand alone at the top through all the alternative bands that came in the wake of the Sonic Youth, who blew the doors off the genre and paved the way for bands like, the Cure and Nirvana... Who are usually given credit for opening up the Alt music scene.
