sonic youth are the best example of a band that signed with a major label to get better distribution and didn't change there sound. Love it :)
@NESman-dm3wd6 жыл бұрын
They absolutely did change their music to sound more like the grunge scene once they signed to a major record label. You're dense if you can't hear the difference between Shadow of Doubt and Kool Thing.
@evanmiles-wright11884 жыл бұрын
Are you high? Sure, I enjoy 'Goo' and 'Dirty', but you have to admit that this is an entirely separate band that'd released 'EVOL'.
@hb-fc3jj2 ай бұрын
Probably the only example. It would never have happened between 1957-1989, or again since about 1996 to the present day. So there was a very brief window where major labels felt they could get a return on formerly independent artists. It didn't work out. Nirvana done well, but they had to compromise the production values on the In Utero singles. Pixies, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth etc were all brilliant bands and well respected in indie circles but the major label scene wasn't for them, they didn't want to play the numbers game. Dirty was predicted to be as big as Nevernind, a ridiculous expectation in hindsight.

@@NESman-dm3wdit’s a good evolution, if they’d kept writing in the style of EVOL it wouldn’t have been interesting. Moments of Washing Machine call back to that period imo, feels similarly subdued and dissonant imo - either way love everything they did!
@hope_canyon2 күн бұрын
@@NESman-dm3wddirty was the result of them getting a six figure advance to record it. They treated this factor as an opportunity to experiment with how their record would sound with absolutely no financial constraints, rather than a new standard for how they'd operate going forward. There's a big difference

@bottafff Sonic Youth was most "popular" in the early to mid '90s, thanks to the wider exposure of their major label deal. However, their heyday is widely regarded to be from 1986 to 1988, when they released the fantastic albums EVOL, Sister, and Daydream Nation. That said, all the periods and phases of their music are awesome, and they are well worth getting into. Start with the three albums I mentioned above.

I was 5 at the time. seems so weird to me, I love their music so much and they had so much influence on me when I was learning to play, I literally can't express what it means to me. guess that would make Moore happy - that thousands of people are now blasting people with new music partly because of him

@noisysoul I saw J&M Chain back in 1987. They played at the student center of my local college. Standing room only; mosh pit 5 ft. in front of the band; the band on the floor, same level as us, no stage, no barricades; only about 200 to 300 people. It was one of the best damn small venue shows I have ever seen.
@mikesilva50853 жыл бұрын
I like their later records but they peaked with Daydream Nation in my opinion- their live shows during that tour were so intense . Saw them in London supported by UT and Rapeman in 1989- they really went for it.

I think he meant that metaphorically... as in they don't want to be people they are not... the simpsons was a portrayal of themselves anyway

Dirty is a solid album. Lot of good tracks on there. If that hadn't been a major label production and they'd done it by way of old it would definitely be considered more essential. I think it's more that they changed sound to become a little too melodic, almost a post-rock band in some places by the time they got to Rather Ripped.
