Jim O'Rourke is responsible for the musical direction of Wilco that turned into greatness since 2000. I truly have influence on him as a producer/mixer on the Sonic Youth Material. Superb and fucking madness that is put into these records. I truly appreciate going into something like this in my future. ✌🔥

O'Rourke has a great feel for music, that much is obvious. He really compliments the dynamic here.

Mark Ibold is now the new bass player of Sonic youth. Jim O'Rourke was a friend of theirs who played bass and guitar during the Murray St era. He's pretty much freelance and plays with many bands.

I agree, Jim O'Rourke is a mastermind that just knows how to add colour and texture to all the SY catalogue. I'm glad Mark Ibold from Pavement is playing with them now though; the new record sounds pretty good.

I'd forgotten about sonic youth for about a decade, and stumbled across this show when it aired. I couldn't believe it was this good, and didn't have TIVO on the set I was watching. I bought Sonic Nurse and Murray street the next day, and make a point of seeing them live whenever I can. FWIW - Jim O'Rourke was some kind of catalyst for them, the show with him was incredible. One of the best I've ever seen.

Great song, with echoes of the song "Marquee Moon" by Television, penned by Tom Verlaine. I noticed it the 1st time I heard it. In an old Thurston interview, the interviewer suggested what I'd thought too, that there was some Television influence on "Murray Street". Thurston agreed Television was one of SY's predecessors that 's "elemental" to SY's sound. And it was hearing Tom play the Fender Jazzmaster that prompted Thurston to play one too. He's called it it his "favourite guitar".

That song is amazing. I don't have any SY records between Washing Machine and Rather Ripped, but I'll definitely buy that album. The song builds up so nicely, it's heartwarming and heart-pounding at the same time.

It's on the album Murray Street, which is great. A little more laid back and jammier than their other stuff, but I love it.

@Bobjb999 excelent post. i always felt echoes of marquee on murray (heh, even the titles are somewhat similiar there)... with all the clean guitar interplay epics and stuff. i wish more songs on it were as good as this one, though i think sympathy for the strawberry is one of their best songs ever, even though it doesn't change over the course of 9 minutes. just something about it.

Yeah, seems like the only one from the Wilco camp is O'Rourke, who didn't get producing credits for the last Wilco album. There's some awesome footage of Thurston and Nels Cline on KZfaq though . . .

Ah, I understand. But on some Jimmy Fallon show I saw Gordon playing bass when they were performing "No Way." And still, there was a second bassist there. What's up with that?
@FQuezo16 жыл бұрын
dude, maybe NYC G&F is not the best album of our era (as Lordtarace says), but it is very good still. It's a non noise experimental album by SY. NYC G&F has a lot of beatiful poetry (like Free City Rhymes) but also shows us the reality naked as it is (Small flowers crack concrete). It's very psychedelic and shows the avant-garde and beat generation influence on the band.

@mradamcooley Rain on Tin's my fave off "Murray" too, although I like most of the album including "Strawberry".I saw an interv. online from a few yrs. back with Tom Verlaine & Thurston together.Apparently, they're jamming pals.I'd love to hear them collaborate on a studio release or concerts. I dig Dim Stars, Thurston's side project with Tom's old band mate Richard Hell. I think Hell's a fine singer, imo better than Thurston, Kim or Tom & maybe even Lee Renaldo (who may be SY's best singer).

I don't really understand what place he holds in the band. Is he simply a second bassist? I'm trying to find the Personnel for The Eternal but cannot find it.
