The Leman Russ is the main battle tank of the Astra Militarum, and a staple of any collection of Imperial Guard stalwarts. Produced en masse by forge worlds across the Imperium, there's few foes that can withstand their armoured might! READ MORE:
With the same basic techniques used to paint your infantry - block colours, a shade and a drybrush to highlight - you can get a Leman Russ on the table in no time. The total painting time spent on this one was around two hours, not a bad turnaround for a couple of evenings of hobby time. Tanks are an ideal candidate for 'edge drybrushing,' where you can highlight very quickly. Whether you're just getting started or an inveterate treadhead, I think this is a pretty solid method for turning out your armoured support choices for any Imperial force. Try swapping colours for different climates or urban environments!
This video comes courtesy of a very generous donation over on my Ko-Fi page, so a massive thank you to the contributor that made this possible - I'm not sure if they're wanting a shout out or to keep it on the down low, but it's very much appreciated and I hope this helps get some of their Guard tanks painted and on the table. :D

Good Day sir. The word you are looking for is Episcope. The driver, gunner, and loader have episcopes. They are fixed in one direction only. The commander has episcopes and one periscope. It doesn’t go up and down like a submarine, but can turn left and right to help the commander find targets and supervise his tank troop/Sqn while under contact. It’s often called the commanders sight. Who said over 30 years in the Royal Canadian Armour Corps wouldn’t come in handy in gaming?!? 😁👍

Sonic Sledgehammer Studio No Problem. Glad I could help out. If you have any questions about tanks, IFVs or Armoured Cars, just ask me. And if I don’t know, my friends in the Ontario Regiment Museum will. FYI: the Ontario Regiment Museum is the largest living history Museum in North America and Second to Bovington in the world. If we can’t find the answer, you don’t need it. Lol!

Painting my first Guard tank and new where to come for painting tips! Dryad bark for the base on the tracks is new for me and looks a right old winner out of the gate. Think I may cheat and mask up the camo with straight edged jags. Don't have to worry about steady hand and crisp edges on the paint that way. Probably do another time saver and use sprays for the base coats. Zandri Dust and Halfords Green Camo perhaps.

@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 4 жыл бұрын
I think it'd depend on the colours I was using for the Hive Fleet they were descended from. As a general thought, I'd probably look at getting a Contrast or Shade in the relevant colour and thinning it down with a little medium, then painting a couple of layers from the 'alien' side toward the 'human' side. Let the first dry, then just a tiny bit less medium and paint a second layer or more that doesn't go quite as far onto the human skin, as a quick way of blending those bits together.

Dude i think you might have stumbled across the Vostroyan Firstborn tank color by accident. I tried your tan color combo out on some test models and sure enough it's almost identical to the Vostroyan Firstborn tank color from the Astra militarum codex. All the tutorials i have found on youtube for Vostroyan armor have either been too dark or the wrong color all together. So yeah thanks even tho that wasn't the point of your tutorial. :)

Hi all! I have a question. I dont have an airbrush (too expensive!) and I paint with a good quality brushes. I usually paint 1:35 tanks without camo (I tought airbrush was strictly necessary) but when I watched your videos and your technique... Can I do the same with 1:35 tanks? I boughy the Fury Sherman and it has a simple camo (olive us drab and a darker olive). Thanks for your videos!!!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio

I don't see why not! The technique should work fine on a larger scale vehicle. I use it on everything between 1:100 to 1:56 scale stuff without a problem, so it ought to do the trick.

Hi there. I'm about to start mine following this tutorial. I do have one question though. For the green parts, I've seen you spread agrax earthshade all over the surface and go straight to highlights with dry brush. Doesn't it get too dark? The "official" painting guide says to shade only details. Thanks in advance
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Whether or not it looks too dark is really up to you. The WarhammerTV method suggests going about it the long way but so long as you're mindful of how your shade settles while you're applying it, you can shave off ages of painting time by just shading and drybrushing.

I'm new to Warhammer and this is actually the first set I'm assembling. Did you paint the entire tread assembly before gluing them on, or did you leave the hidden portions unpainted? I don't want to glue those segments on if I should paint the entire thing first.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
In the video you can see they're attached the whole way through. If something's hidden and is never going to be seen, there's next to no reason to paint it - unless it's a vehicle interior you're planning to show off at some point, it's just more work.

Custodes would require me buying a box, unfortunately - they're not cheap golden boys! If it helps any, I'd paint them in much the same way as I do my Stormcast Eternals. That's a slightly older video now, but the way in which I paint gold wouldn't change. The only real difference would be using red for their capes instead of blue, and that's just Mephiston Red. :D

I'm incredibly lazy. I'd just undercoat with black, spray a couple of coats of Green on, done :P. People keep saying, what's the easiest army to paint? Is it Necron, is it Eldar, is it Iron Hands space marines? No, it's an Imperial Guard tank only army. Spray black, spray green, paint weapons with Leadbelcher, wash with Agarax Earth Shade and Nuln Oil, done. World class lazy painting and collecting of "whatever is easiest". You know what confuses me about tanks? They keep painting them in cammo colours to add a stealthy approach to them, but wouldn't the roar of the engines give their position away anyway when they move, making all the camo paint pointless? Not to mention their thermal heat signature, assuming they use thermal vision in the 41st millennium. Be a bit hard to miss a squad of big, f**k off Baneblades closing in on your position.
