While hunting Vulpix for my Fire Monotype Challenge through Silver, I got just a little unlucky with my phase luck. 8 Shiny Pidgey in a row.
The hunt for Vulpix looked simple enough being a level 13 repel trick during the Day to make it 37.5% instead of 10%. Pidgey is 50%, Vulpix is 37.5% and Stantler is 12.5%. A coin flip for Pidgey and something else that I lost 8 times in a row. Insanity.
I hope you enjoy the eventual descent into madness with this hunt.

This was such a long arduous quest Sonikks. Constantly seeing your posts on social media of all 8 Shiny Pidgeys and the jokes you made like “He sit. Not only did you get 8 pidgeys in a row, you got 8 female pidgeys all with the same stats Attack 19, defense 19, special atk 17, special def 17 and speed 23 i think you found the exact same pidgey 8 times

In a world where shiny hunting is becoming annoying for how easy it is I LOVE THAT SOMEONE STILL GOES THE OLD FASHIONED WAY P.S. my unluckiest shiny hunt ever was zapdos in fire red…. 7 months! But I love my zapdos, he was my first shiny legendary ever and he owns a special place in my heart

Wonderful video as always! Your intro reminded me of my Dynamax Adventure Groudon hunt, which took 298 encounters with the charm and over 20 phases. I hunted it overe the course of a month, and even though it was a pain to hunt, it's a token of my sheer dedication and a very cool trophy especially in an apricorn ball.

For phasing I believe that might be held by SH_Lucious who went a stupid amount of phases for Bronzor (55%) in BDSP. Hard to think of worse phase hunts than that.

I had one of these, in dark cave in hgss its a 60% geodude, 39% zubat and i found 5 geodudes before zubat, not as ridiculous but definitely has the same energy

On my silver game as a kid I caught a shiny pidgey early. I evolved it to pidgeot and eventually leveled to 100. I realize now how lucky that was. I wonder if the save is still on the game or if the battery is dead….

I'm doing my first legit hunt of a shiny rayquaza in pokemon emerald. I haven't gotten too far yet however I fixed the game battery and everything and it is thankfully a legit cartidge i've come to find out which is cool. I think i'm about 150-200 encounters. Good luck on your hunts you're on another level. I could never imagine getting that many shinys in a row that sounds like hell

Yeah I think it is. They have identical stats too, same DV range. Gen 2's shiny pool for stats is incredibly small so it's very common for it to happen. Good catch btw, ty for watching :)

You might be able to help me as I'm in a similar situation and information on Gen 2 is so scarce I'm struggling. Basically, I want a shiny male Mareep, 15x phases and 4x are female. I can backup my saves and look at them in PKHeX and every female Mareep is identical, female, 7 Attack IV's. This is actually a trend I've noticed phasing in the past, before this hunt as well, the Pokemon in the code are completely identical, the same exact Pokemon (by my understanding, there are 8x possible different Attack IV's, 4x are numbers between 1 and 7 = female, and 4x are numbers between 8 and 15 = male, so 8x possible different shiny Pokemon, but this time and in the past while phasing I get many of the same exact 1 in 8 shiny. Oh, and every Gen 2 shiny Mareep on KZfaq is female, only helping fuel my paranoia. I feel like there's something about Gen 2 RNG I'm missing but there's nothing on this that I can find. 8x phases in, I began turning on my console on 6x hours before I began hunting, after the 15x, I've now started sitting on the screen before you enter the save, thinking that might change something. Basically I'm just asking if there's any information on this and Gen 2 RNG in general?

The only thing I've ever been able to determine (or strongly at least) is that the RNG is tied to the clock. Myself and a bunch of other shiny hunters phased a lot for a particular target. In some cases, people did a ridiculous and likely improbable amount of phases for something. I would agree there's something not quite right sometimes. According to this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y95nq9iKuMibfJ8.html - by leaving the clock as "unset" for time specific hunts, in my case Vulpix during the day, it would likely be causing you to go over the same frames. I think, anyway. Essentially, we leave the clock as "set" and every time we need to change it to restart the hunt, we put in the password, set the time again, save and then reset to begin the hunt. It seems to be the way as I got Vulpix on the 2nd phase after doing this. As for your hunt, I don't know if this is applicable or not but that's what I have. I also got the same 1/8 Attack DV while doing this. I'm currently at 30,000 first phase for Magmar, so who knows if that hunt will be the same as this. Sadly, RNG information is very lacking in Gen 2. People just want Celebi and to never touch it again. Hopefully someone figures it out someday. Good luck on your hunt, hope this has helped somewhat.

Question, why do you run/bike around in the tall grass instead of using sweet scent? Is there a factual reason, or is it just preference?

Two reasons. First, it's significantly slower. There's only a few scenarios in which Sweet Scent is more optimal such as surfing encounters, places with low encounter rare like Underwater in Hoenn or Three Isle Port in FireRed and LeafGreen. Second, you can't repel trick and do sweet scent at the same time. Sweet Scent is base encounters so Vulpix would have reverted to being a 10% spawn in this particular case.

The degeneration of your tone of voice, I felt for you so bad! I wonder though (just a hunch) if this has something to do with the combo of the repel trick and the stats? Maybe the luck is skewed for that EXACT pidgey if the repel trick is narrowing the stat margins. Seems more likely than the raw chance....be interesting if anyone has the ability to check that (I don't hahaha). Great video nonetheless!!
