Sonnet 121 by William Shakespeare
’Tis better to be vile than vile esteemed
When not to be receives reproach of being,
And the just pleasure lost, which is so deemed
Not by our feeling but by others' seeing.
For why should others’ false adulterate eyes
Give salutation to my sportive blood?
Or on my frailties why are frailer spies,
Which in their wills count bad that I think good?
No, I am that I am; and they that level
At my abuses reckon up their own:
I may be straight though they themselves be bevel;
By their rank thoughts my deeds must not be shown,
Unless this general evil they maintain:
All men are bad and in their badness reign.

121. szonett (fordította Győry Vilmos és Szász Károly)
Jobb lenni rosznak mint tartani rosznak,
Ha jót sem óv már vádtul érdeme,
S itél ártatlan élvet is gonosznak
Vádolni éltem: rájok száll a vád;
Egyenes én vagyok, mig ők a ferdék,
S nem szabja tettem hozzájok magát,
Mig átkos elvök nem valósodik:
Mindenki rosz s a rosz uralkodik.

I remember my English Lit professor at Shasta College reciting this over 50 yrs ago!! He knew every one of these by memory. But this one, he didn't recite with warmth or wistfulness. This one was invoked!!, with tones of bitterness, subdued rage and pleading.

I remember when he called on me in class to ask which one I had memorized. And when I said no. 121, he really lit up and beamed, big time.
