Nice comparison, but for many wildlife and bird photographers, the important comparison would have been the 100-400 at 400 cropped to the same framing as the 600. That's what really counts for those shooters, and I think the results and conclusion would have been very different.

Better yet, compare 100-400 with 1.4x TC vs. 200-600. This is the decision I am trying to make.

I don’t think that’s a good comparison. Of course the 200-600 will be better than the 100-400 with cropping like that. The point is to compare how well each lens works in it’s own focal range.

Hey I bought it in Hi Rez online. A regular printer won't print high enough resolution for proper tests.

Really odd that you did not compare them at the same focal lengths instead of using the extremes. And the best question that was not addressed was could the 100-400 cropped to equivalent 600mm top the 200-600mm at 600. Most of us that shoot wildlife are camping out at the long end. I

i wonder why people dont compare the exact same settings to the exact same settings. put the gmaster at 200mm and the same f/stop and compare them

Hi, Thanks, Stefan for your comparison video! Because I travel small size is important, as well as needing a long reaching lens that works with my APSC Sony A6600 camera. I found a wonderful high quality lens for a great price open box, after discounts, for under $550...the sony alpha 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G. Just a great, practical lens that is reasonably light, has a wonderful range of zoom, and with a small size that easily fits in my small travel bag.

Good review, I've owned both and the 100-400 is a lot sharper and has better contrast it also focuses more accurately. I also have the 1.4x TC. I found the 100-400 with the 1.4 TC combination to be sharper than the 200-600 alone . I now have the 100-400 again. One point that might help people is everyone knows the 100-400 has good close focusing and the 200-600 only focuses down to 2.3 meters if I remember correctly but because its at 600mm you can still fill the frame with a butterfly and its close up sharpness seemed to me its best point.

Not sure why you didn’t compare the 100-400 and 200-600 at 400 and 200, where they actually overlap, or the 100-400 cropped to 600 (APS-C mode), scaled to the same size image and compared to the 200-600 at 600mm.

A fair comparison would have been to put a 1.4 TC on the 100-400 to achieve similar focal lengths. 🤔

1-4 is sharper and focusses faster than the 2-6. Even with 1.4, the 1-4 matches the 2-6. Lighter and more compact, so replaces my 2-6.😊

I would also test this with the tele converter too to see if it's compatible to the 200-600. Nice review.

So here's my thoughts. I have the A9 & 2-600 & it's a great combo! However... I will be upgrading to the A1 at some point. Now... would an A1 with it's huge cropability and the 100-400 cropped in to make up the 200mm where needed, be a better choice than the 2-600? That's my decision i'm trying to make lol. Even shooting in crop mode in camera on the A1 and 1-400 will give you similar reach to the 2-600... Thoughts?

did you decide? A1 is very expensive, you could buy a canon and get bird eyeAF and long lens for cheaper than A1 body.

I'm guessing both test photos were shot at the same distance, just the one shot on 100-400 was blown up to match the 200-600? Pretty sure there are many real-world scenarios where I can't physically move closer the subject, so I was just wondering.

Great video! Would be nice to see both at 200mm & at 400mm in comparison. The only down side for me on the 100-400mm is the external zoom & it’s longevity…due to air, dust & sands. I own couple of Nikon & Sony with external zoom lenses and it’s not that great anymore.

I would rather have seen a comparison of the G master lens at 400 versus the 200-600 also at 400 for an apples to apples comparison. Same at 200 vs 200, and 300 vs 300. Also the G master with 400 + 1.4x vs the 200-600 at 560mm.

In general, I appreciate your comparisons. However, comparing two lenses at 100 vs 200 and 400 and 600? You must be after short sleep with hangover. You should have compared 200 vs 200 and 400 vs 200. Then you might add 100 and 600 as two different matters for those who need the range.

G Master is shorter, lighter, faster, and sharper - I would say it is definitely worth the extra money. Yeah, you lose the extra range, but I think over the course of the use of it (especially if you're going to make prints and sell them) it'll make up for the difference over time. Excellent comparison and review.

Sure you lose 400-600 range but you also gain 100-200 and that makes the lens much more versatile.

I don't get why most of the reviewers do not compare all 4 corners of the lenses. Most of the lenses have slight variance of the sharpness between the corners. At least provide RAW files so we can check them ourselves.

The difference between 400 and 600 isn't as significant as the difference between 100 and 200. The 100-400 is extremely versatile and serves multiples roles from wildlife, semi-macro, portrait, and even landscape. The 200-600 is truly a gem and afiak only exist in the Sony ecosystem (until Nikon releases theirs) but it's a specialized tool used primarily for birds, although it can be used for other things, that's where it excels in this comparison.

The comparisons are not particularly helpful, and the approach shows a clear bias towards the 100-400mm. The review compares each lens at its widest and furtherest reach. Such a comparison is not fair for two reasons. Firstly, providing sharp images becomes more difficult the greater the magnification; second, the apperature changes with zoom distance provide further deterioration of image quality. Under this type of review it is obvious that the 100-400mm has teh advantage. Hwoever, people that are considering these lenses would be wanting to know direct comparisons at the same focal focal length - how does each lens compare at 200mm, 300mm, 400mm, and what is the 100-400mm like at 560mm (with the 1.4x converter) compared to the 200-600mm lens at the same focal lengths. When this rdirect comparison is performed the 200-600mm wins in image quality at every focal length.

The difference in sharpness was not big. Despite the price difference I would buy the 100-400. The 200-600 is to big. Now I own the 70-350 for APS-C, the 100-400 will give me a reach of 150-600 on an APS-C camera or in APS-C mode om full frame. Sigma 100-400 is a much cheaper alternative, still on both the Sony lenses you can use teleconvertes too.

Remember your 70-350 is still giving you 525mm reach on APSC camera or in APSC mode on fullframe, even though it is an APSC lens.

@@hiawrj I know, after I bought it I have tried some bird photography. I struggle with autofocus and don't know whether it is me, the lens or the camera (a6500).

@@TVe200 It's a G lens with the newest extreme linear motors, so I doubt it's the lens. The a6500 is a generation behind a6100, a6400 and a6600 when it comes to AF speed - but I don't have any birding experience, so it's all theoretical for me.

@@hiawrj I know that a6600 have better AF, it have also tracking move which is great for birds in flight. I had hoped for more improvements in a6600 than better AF, bigger battery and nothing else. I am waiting to se whether Sony will release a better APS-C camera or kill the APS-C totaly.

@@TVe200 I don't think they will kill APS-C, it's their gratest selling line of cameras. But it's very wise to wait a little, since no new aps-c cameras have been announced for a while. Next gen sony cameras will all come with features like the ones we see in a7siii, if they are something you need.
